Toward a Modeling Framework for Organizational Competency

    Get PDF
Part 6: Computational Systems ApplicationsInternational audienceCompetency modeling framework serves as a; (a) very important basis for the explanation of a generic competency modeling approach, (b) base element in the consolidation of existing knowledge in this area, (c) tool for model developers on selecting appropriate competency models, and (d) basis for competency modeling. This research uses literature review approach to propose a modeling framework for organizational competency. The proposed modeling framework has been developed based on the most relevant well known competency models. The research suggests that organizational competency can be categorized into three groups; individual competency, enterprise competency and collaboration-oriented competency. For modeling each of these groups, it is essential that the modeling process have to be aligned with model developer purpose (Modeling perspective), thus the model developing process will be based on the same segmentation model. Furthermore, competencies have to be model at different levels of abstraction (modeling intent)

Do Competency Frameworks Influence Business Performance? An Empirical Study of the Nigerian Banking Sector

    Get PDF
The competency-based management system has grown to become one of the most influential HRM tools of the 21st century. However, there remains limited empirical data addressing the relationship between the adoption of a competency framework and organizational performance. The study reported upon in this paper is based within the Nigerian banking sector. A qualitative methodological approach was adopted, employing interviews with employees of the top ten high street banks in Nigeria. The result of the field data was subsequently analyzed using NVivo in order to achieve the aim of the research. The findings revealed that competency-based management frameworks are being used and that indeed they are a key management tool within the selected Nigerian banks. Importantly, the findings clearly suggest the adopted competency frameworks are having a positive impact on the banks’ performance

Efficacy of Online Training for Improving Camp Staff Competency

Preparing competent staff is a critical issue within the camp community. This quasi-experimental study examined the effectiveness of an online course for improving staff competency in camp healthcare practices among college-aged camp staff and a comparison group (N = 55). We hypothesized that working in camp would increase competency test scores due to opportunities for staff to experientially apply knowledge learned online. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to analyse the cross-level effects of a between-individuals factor (assignment to experimental or comparison group) and within-individual effects of time (pre-test, post-test #1, and post-test #2) on online course test scores. At post-test #2, the difference in average test scores between groups was ~30 points, with the treatment group scoring lower on average than the comparison group. Factors that may have influenced these findings are explored, including fatigue and the limited durability of online learning. Recommendations for research and practice are discussed

Nurse Residency Program: Best Practices for Optimizing Organizational Success

    Get PDF
A nurse residency program’s best practice recommendations are presented within this article and are organized around three processes: establishing the program infrastructure, creating a multistaged evidence-based program, and sustaining the program through appropriate evaluation and dissemination of results. These recommendations represent lessons learned and key findings derived from a team of academic and nursing professional development educators after 7 years of residency program implementation at multiple rural and urban hospital sites. Organizations, regardless of size and resources, can use these recommendations to increase the likelihood of building a successful residency program

The list has been developed based on a broad interpretation of the subject of ‘strategy & complexity’. Resources will therefore more, or less directly relate to ‘being strategic in the face of complexity’. Many of the articles and reports referred to in the attached bibliography can be accessed and downloaded from the internet. Most books can be found at amazon.com where you will often find a number of book reviews and summaries as well. Sometimes, reading the reviews will suffice and will give you the essence of the contents of the book after which you do not need to buy it. If the book looks interesting enough, buying options are easy

The Role-Based Performance Scale: Validity Analysis of a Theory-Based Measure

    Get PDF
This study introduces a theory-based measure of employee performance (Role Based Performance Scale, RBPS) that is supported with results from a validation study using 10 data sets from six companies. In contrast to traditional, job-related measures of employee performance, we propose an alternative measure of performance based on role theory and identity theory. Because our results support the validity of the scale, we think that the instrument can be used for future research that requires a generalizable measure of performance. The scale demonstrates diagnostic properties that make it useful for practitioners as well as researchers
