    Human-robot teamwork: a knowledge-based solution

This stems from the fact that robots and humans have significantly different perceptual, reasoning, communication and actuation capabilities. This dissertation contributes to solving this problem by proposing a knowledge-based multi-agent system to support design and execution of stereotyped (i.e. recurring) human-robot teamwork. The cooperative workflow formalism has been selected to specify team plans, and adapted to allow activities to share structured data, even during their execution. This novel functionality enables tightly coupled interactions among team members. Rather than focusing on automatic teamwork planning, this dissertation proposes a complementary and intuitive knowledge-based solution for fast deployment and adaptation of small scale human-robot teams. In addition, the system has been designed in order to improve task awareness of each mission participant, and of the human overall mission awareness. A set of empirical results obtained from simulated and real missions proved the concept and the reusability of such a system. Practical results showed that this approach used is an effective solution for small scale teams in stereotyped human-robot teamwork

    Design of a goal ontology for medical decision-support

Until now, these efforts have focused primarily on representing content of clinical guidelines and their logical structure. The present study aims to develop a computable representation of health-care providers' intentions to be used as part of a framework for implementing clinical decision-support systems. Our goal is to create an ontology that supports retrieval of plans based on the intentions or goals of the clinician. Methods: We developed an ontological representation of medical goals, plans, clinical scenarios and other relevant entities in medical decision-making. We used the resulting ontology along with an external ontology inference engine to simulate selection of clinical recommendations based on goals. The ontology instances used in the simulation were modeled from two clinical guidelines. Testing the design: Thirty-two clinical recommendations were encoded in the experimental model. Nine test cases were created to verify the ability of the model to retrieve the plans. For all nine cases, plans were successfully retrieved. Conclusion: The ontological design we developed supported effective reasoning over a medical knowledge base.(cont.) The immediate extension of this approach to be fully developed in medical applications may be partially limited by the lack of available editing tools.     An integration framework for managing rich organisational process knowledge

    The problem we have addressed in this dissertation is that of designing a pragmatic framework for integrating the synthesis and management of organisational process knowledge which is based on domain-independent AI planning and plan representations. Our solution has focused on a set of framework components which provide methods, tools and representations to accomplish this task.In the framework we address a lifecycle of this knowledge which begins with a methodological approach to acquiring information about the process domain. We show that this initial domain specification can be translated into a common constraint-based model of activity (based on the work of Tate, 1996c and 1996d) which can then be operationalised for use in an AI planner. This model of activity is ontologically underpinned and may be expressed with a flexible and extensible language based on a sorted first-order logic. The model combines perspectives covering both the space of behaviour as well as the space of decisions. Synthesised or modified processes/plans can be translated to and from the common representation in order to support knowledge sharing, visualisation and mixed-initiative interaction.This work united past and present Edinburgh research on planning and infused it with perspectives from design rationale, requirements engineering, and process knowledge sharing. The implementation has been applied to a portfolio of scenarios which include process examples from business, manufacturing, construction and military operations.     Cognitively-inspired Agent-based Service Composition for Mobile & Pervasive Computing

    Automatic service composition in mobile and pervasive computing faces many challenges due to the complex and highly dynamic nature of the environment. Common approaches consider service composition as a decision problem whose solution is usually addressed from optimization perspectives which are not feasible in practice due to the intractability of the problem, limited computational resources of smart devices, service host's mobility, and time constraints to tailor composition plans. Thus, our main contribution is the development of a cognitively-inspired agent-based service composition model focused on bounded rationality rather than optimality, which allows the system to compensate for limited resources by selectively filtering out continuous streams of data. Our approach exhibits features such as distributedness, modularity, emergent global functionality, and robustness, which endow it with capabilities to perform decentralized service composition by orchestrating manifold service providers and conflicting goals from multiple users.
