Presented in this paper is our experience of teaching freeform fabrication to students at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, and to high school students and teachers. The emphasis of the curriculum is exposing students to rapid product development technologies with the goal of creating awareness to emerging career opportunities in CAD/CAM. Starting from solid modeling, principles of freeform fabrication, to applications of rapid prototyping and manufacturing in industry sponsored product development projects, students can learn in-depth freeform fabrication technologies. Volume Modeling for Rapid Prototyping

The expanding workspace of Rapid Prototyping will draw on the new developments in geometric modeling. Volume modeling has substantial advantages over other modeling schemes to meet the emerging requirements of Rapid Prototyping technology. It provides us with a new approach to design complex geometry and topology. The integration of the volume modeling and Rapid Prototyping technology will help us to fully exploit RP's ability to fabricate objects with complex structures. This paper addresses our research and practice in a volume modeling system toward Rapid Prototyping. Novel techniques in volumetric data manipulation, NURBS volume models and triangular facet generation over solid models are presented. Considerations for a design and operations knowledge support system for Space Station Freedom

Engineering and operations of modern engineered systems depend critically upon detailed design and operations knowledge that is accurate and authoritative. A design and operations knowledge support system (DOKSS) is a modern computer-based information system providing knowledge about the creation, evolution, and growth of an engineered system. The purpose of a DOKSS is to provide convenient and effective access to this multifaceted information. The complexity of Space Station Freedom's (SSF's) systems, elements, interfaces, and organizations makes convenient access to design knowledge especially important, when compared to simpler systems. The life cycle length, being 30 or more years, adds a new dimension to space operations, maintenance, and evolution. Provided here is a review and discussion of design knowledge support systems to be delivered and operated as a critical part of the engineered system. A concept of a DOKSS for Space Station Freedom (SSF) is presented. This is followed by a detailed discussion of a DOKSS for the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center and Work Package-2 portions of SSF

Good and Service Tax (GST) an indirect broad-based conswnpti.on tax. Following with the implementation of GST in Malaysia on 1st April 2015, it is suspected that the construction capital cost and housing property price will increase accordingly. This study is aim to review the GST effect associated on construction capital cost and it influences towards housing developer and housing property price. Additionally, this study highlights what was the developer point of view on the GST given to them and also the housing price further proposes initiatives to the housing developers. Argument of GST effect is useful for the public administrators so that to re-consider the rate of GST and also beneficial to the construction parties to account with the GST implementation. As conclusion, this study review that GST do give an impact towards the construction capital cost, housing developer and housing property price in terms of knock-on effect

Effect of PAO-based γ-Fe2O3 and surfactant concentration on viscosity characteristic

This is a preliminary study on the viscosity characteristics of polyalphaolefin (PAO)- based γ-Fe2O3 under zero magnetic fields. By varying the concentration of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), PAO-based γ-Fe2O3 with different concentrations were synthesized by co-precipitation method. The effect of this factor on the viscosity characteristic of γ-Fe2O3 (< 30 nm) was investigated on the basic of a series of rheological measurement. The use of oleic acid (OA) as a coating agent and surfactant was also investigated by varying its concentration. The results show the concentration of MNPs and the amount of OA has obvious effect on viscosity characteristics of PAO-based γ-Fe2O3. In the case of comparison between the concentrations of MNPs, higher concentration of MNPs increased the viscosity of the PAO-based γ-Fe2O3 and exhibit nearly Newtonian behavior. The large amount of OA also exhibits the increment on viscosity characteristic of MNPs. The experimental data were compared with the Bingham and Casson model and the results revealed that the rheology of the polyalphaolefin (PAO)-based γ-Fe2O3 fitted the Casson model better

Caldesmon regulates actin dynamics to influence cranial neural crest migration in Xenopus

Caldesmon (CaD) is an important actin modulator that associates with actin filaments to regulate cell morphology and motility. Although extensively studied in cultured cells, there is little functional information regarding the role of CaD in migrating cells in vivo. Here we show that nonmuscle CaD is highly expressed in both premigratory and migrating cranial neural crest cells of Xenopus embryos. Depletion of CaD with antisense morpholino oligonucleotides causes cranial neural crest cells to migrate a significantly shorter distance, prevents their segregation into distinct migratory streams, and later results in severe defects in cartilage formation. Demonstrating specificity, these effects are rescued by adding back exogenous CaD. Interestingly, CaD proteins with mutations in the Ca^(2+)-calmodulin–binding sites or ErK/Cdk1 phosphorylation sites fail to rescue the knockdown phenotypes, whereas mutation of the PAK phosphorylation site is able to rescue them. Analysis of neural crest explants reveals that CaD is required for the dynamic arrangements of actin and, thus, for cell shape changes and process formation. Taken together, these results suggest that the actin-modulating activity of CaD may underlie its critical function and is regulated by distinct signaling pathways during normal neural crest migration

Computational Simulation and 3D Virtual Reality Engineering Tools for Dynamical Modeling and Imaging of Composite Nanomaterials

An adventure at engineering design and modeling is possible with a Virtual Reality Environment (VRE) that uses multiple computer-generated media to let a user experience situations that are temporally and spatially prohibiting. In this paper, an approach to developing some advanced architecture and modeling tools is presented to allow multiple frameworks work together while being shielded from the application program. This architecture is being developed in a framework of workbench interactive tools for next generation nanoparticle-reinforced damping/dynamic systems.
