Programming in logic without logic programming
In previous work, we proposed a logic-based framework in which computation is
the execution of actions in an attempt to make reactive rules of the form if
antecedent then consequent true in a canonical model of a logic program
determined by an initial state, sequence of events, and the resulting sequence
of subsequent states. In this model-theoretic semantics, reactive rules are the
driving force, and logic programs play only a supporting role.
In the canonical model, states, actions and other events are represented with
timestamps. But in the operational semantics, for the sake of efficiency,
timestamps are omitted and only the current state is maintained. State
transitions are performed reactively by executing actions to make the
consequents of rules true whenever the antecedents become true. This
operational semantics is sound, but incomplete. It cannot make reactive rules
true by preventing their antecedents from becoming true, or by proactively
making their consequents true before their antecedents become true.
In this paper, we characterize the notion of reactive model, and prove that
the operational semantics can generate all and only such models. In order to
focus on the main issues, we omit the logic programming component of the

Exploring sensor data management
The increasing availability of cheap, small, low-power sensor hardware and the ubiquity of wired and wireless networks has led to the prediction that `smart evironments' will emerge in the near future. The sensors in these environments collect detailed information about the situation people are in, which is used to enhance information-processing applications that are present on their mobile and `ambient' devices.\ud

Bridging the gap between sensor data and application information poses new requirements to data management. This report discusses what these requirements are and documents ongoing research that explores ways of thinking about data management suited to these new requirements: a more sophisticated control flow model, data models that incorporate time, and ways to deal with the uncertainty in sensor data
Reachability Analysis of Time Basic Petri Nets: a Time Coverage Approach
We introduce a technique for reachability analysis of Time-Basic (TB) Petri
nets, a powerful formalism for real- time systems where time constraints are
expressed as intervals, representing possible transition firing times, whose
bounds are functions of marking's time description. The technique consists of
building a symbolic reachability graph relying on a sort of time coverage, and
overcomes the limitations of the only available analyzer for TB nets, based in
turn on a time-bounded inspection of a (possibly infinite) reachability-tree.
The graph construction algorithm has been automated by a tool-set, briefly
described in the paper together with its main functionality and analysis
capability. A running example is used throughout the paper to sketch the
symbolic graph construction. A use case describing a small real system - that
the running example is an excerpt from - has been employed to benchmark the
technique and the tool-set. The main outcome of this test are also presented in
the paper. Ongoing work, in the perspective of integrating with a

Optimizing Abstract Abstract Machines
The technique of abstracting abstract machines (AAM) provides a systematic
approach for deriving computable approximations of evaluators that are easily
proved sound. This article contributes a complementary step-by-step process for
subsequently going from a naive analyzer derived under the AAM approach, to an
efficient and correct implementation. The end result of the process is a two to
three order-of-magnitude improvement over the systematically derived analyzer,
making it competitive with hand-optimized implementations that compute

TEMPOS: A Platform for Developing Temporal Applications on Top of Object DBMS
This paper presents TEMPOS: a set of models and languages supporting the manipulation of temporal data on top of object DBMS. The proposed models exploit object-oriented technology to meet some important, yet traditionally neglected design criteria related to legacy code migration and representation independence. Two complementary ways for accessing temporal data are offered: a query language and a visual browser. The query language, namely TempOQL, is an extension of OQL supporting the manipulation of histories regardless of their representations, through fully composable functional operators. The visual browser offers operators that facilitate several time-related interactive navigation tasks, such as studying a snapshot of a collection of objects at a given instant, or detecting and examining changes within temporal attributes and relationships. TEMPOS models and languages have been formalized both at the syntactical and the semantical level and have been implemented on top of an object DBMS. The suitability of the proposals with regard to applications' requirements has been validated through concrete case studies
Distributed Simulation of Heterogeneous and Real-time Systems
This work describes a framework for distributed simulation of cyber-physical systems (CPS). Modern CPS comprise large numbers of heterogeneous components, typically designed in very different tools and languages that are not or not easily composeable. Evaluating such large systems requires tools that integrate all components in a systematic, well-defined manner. This work leverages existing frameworks to facilitate the integration offers validation by simulation. A framework for distributed simulation is the IEEE High-Level Architecture (HLA) compliant tool CERTI, which provides the infrastructure for co-simulation of models in various simulation environments as well as hardware components. We use CERTI in combination with Ptolemy II, an environment for modeling and simulating heterogeneous systems. In particular, we focus on models of a CPS, including the physical dynamics of a plant, the software that controls the plant, and the network that enables the communication between controllers. We describe the Ptolemy extensions for the interaction with HLA and demonstrate the approach on a flight control system simulation
