    A practical approach to cellular communications standards education

    The cellular communications industry is steadily growing and expanding to solve the needs of governments, businesses and communities. Standards are fundamental to enable cooperation while promoting competition. The companies involved contribute and agree on appropriate technical specifications to ensure diversity, compatibility and facilitate worldwide commercial deployment and evolution. The specifications of cellular communications standards are extensive, complex and intentionally incomplete to spur innovation and differentiation. This makes standards education a difficult endeavor, but it is highly demanded by the wireless industry. This paper describes a practical approach to teaching cellular communications standards. Our methodology leverages software-defined radio technology and uses the abstraction layer and operating environment (ALOE) to provide a practical learning environment that facilitates developing many of the needed technical and soft skills without the inherent difficulty and cost associated with radio frequency components and regulation. We define six learning stages that assimilate the standardization process and identify key learning objectives for each. We discuss our experiences when employing the proposed methodology at Barcelona Tech in Spain, compare the approach with an equivalent class at Virginia Tech in the US and make the following observations: (1) The complexity of standards need to be abstracted and presented in a form suitable for a given class. (2) Educating about cellular communications standards is most effective when students are immersed in the process.     Enhancing spectrum utilization through cooperation and cognition in wireless systems

The resulting explosion of wireless demand has put immense pressure on available spectrum. Improving spectrum utilization is therefore necessary to enable wireless networks to keep up with burgeoning demand. This dissertation presents a cognitive and cooperative wireless architecture that significantly enhances spectrum utilization. Specifically, it introduces four new systems that embody a cross-layer design for cognition and cooperation. The first system, SWIFT, is a cognitive cross technology solution that enables wideband devices to exploit higher layer network semantics to adaptively sense which portions of the spectrum are occupied by unknown narrowband devices, and weave the remaining unoccupied spectrum bands into a single high-throughput wideband link. Second, FARA is a cooperative system that enables multi-channel wireless solutions like 802.11 to dynamically use all available channels for all devices in a performance-aware manner by using information from the physical layer and allocating to each link the frequency bands that show the highest performance for that link. SourceSync, the third system, enables wireless nodes in last-hop and wireless mesh networks to cooperatively transmit synchronously in order to exploit channel diversity and increase reliability. Finally, MegaMIMO enables wireless throughput to scale linearly with the number of transmitters by enabling multiple wireless transmitters to transmit simultaneously in the same frequency bands to multiple wireless receivers without interfering with each other. The systems in this dissertation demonstrate the practicality of cognitive and cooperative wireless systems to enable spectrum sharing. Further, as part of these systems, we design several novel primitives - adaptive spectrum sensing, time alignment, frequency synchronization, and distributed phase-coherent transmission, that can serve as fundamental building blocks for wireless cognition and cooperation.     A scalable real-time processing chain for radar exploiting illuminators of opportunity

    Includes bibliographical references.This thesis details the design of a processing chain and system software for a commensal radar system, that is, a radar that makes use of illuminators of opportunity to provide the transmitted waveform. The stages of data acquisition from receiver back-end, direct path interference and clutter suppression, range/Doppler processing and target detection are described and targeted to general purpose commercial off-the-shelf computing hardware. A detailed low level design of such a processing chain for commensal radar which includes both processing stages and processing stage interactions has, to date, not been presented in the Literature. Furthermore, a novel deployment configuration for a networked multi-site FM broadcast band commensal radar system is presented in which the reference and surveillance channels are record at separate locations

    This dissertation addresses the problems of ensuring efficient radio fre-quency transmission for 5G wireless networks. Taking into account, that the next generation 5G wireless network structure will be heterogeneous, the device density and their mobility will increase and massive MIMO connectivity capability will be widespread, the main investigated problem is formulated – increasing the efficiency of portable mid-band 5G wireless network CMOS power amplifier with impedance matching networks. The dissertation consists of four parts including the introduction, 3 chapters, conclusions, references and 3 annexes. The investigated problem, importance and purpose of the thesis, the ob-ject of the research methodology, as well as the scientific novelty are de-fined in the introduction. Practical significance of the obtained results, defended state-ments and the structure of the dissertation are also included. The first chapter presents an extensive literature analysis. Latest ad-vances in the structure of the modern wireless network and the importance of the power amplifier in the radio frequency transmission chain are de-scribed in detail. The latter is followed by different power amplifier archi-tectures, parameters and their improvement techniques. Reported imped-ance matching network design methods are also discussed. Chapter 1 is concluded distinguishing the possible research vectors and defining the problems raised in this dissertation. The second chapter is focused around improving the accuracy of de-signing lumped impedance matching network. The proposed methodology of estimating lumped inductor and capacitor parasitic parameters is dis-cussed in detail provi-ding complete mathematical expressions, including a summary and conclusions. The third chapter presents simulation results for the designed radio fre-quency power amplifiers. Two variations of Doherty power amplifier archi-tectures are presented in the second part, covering the full step-by-step de-sign and simulation process. The latter chapter is concluded by comparing simulation and measurement results for all designed radio frequency power amplifiers. General conclusions are followed by an extensive list of references and a list of 5 publications by the author on the topic of the dissertation. 5 papers, focusing on the subject of the discussed dissertation, have been published: three papers are included in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Sci-ence database with a citation index, one paper is included in Clarivate Ana-lytics Web of Science database Conference Proceedings, and one paper has been published in unreferred international conference preceedings.     Nonlinear impairments and mitigation technologies for the next generation fiber-wireless mobile fronthaul networks

    The proliferation of Internet-connected mobile devices and video-intensive services are driving the growth of mobile data traffic in an explosive way. The last mile of access networks, mobile fronthaul (MFH) networks, have become the data rate bottleneck of user experience. The objective of this research are two-fold. For analog MFH, nonlinear interferences among multiple bands of mobile signals in a multi-RAT multi-service radio-over-fiber (RoF)-based MFH system are investigated for the first time. The nonlinear impairments of both single-carrier and multi-carrier signals are investigated, and it is experimentally demonstrated that inter-channel interferences play a more important role in the performance degradation of analog MFH than the nonlinear distortions of each individual signal. A digital predistortion technique was also presented to linearize the analog MFH links. On the other hand, for digital MFH, we experimentally demonstrate a novel digitization interface based on delta-sigma modulation to replace the state-of-the-art common public radio interface (CPRI). Compared with CPRI, it provides improved spectral efficiency and enhanced fronthaul capacity, and can accommodate both 4G-LTE and 5G mobile services.Ph.D
