Multi-Moji: Combining Thermal, Vibrotactile and Visual Stimuli to Expand the Affective Range of Feedback
This paper explores the combination of multiple concurrent
modalities for conveying emotional information in HCI:
temperature, vibration and abstract visual displays. Each modality
has been studied individually, but can only convey a
limited range of emotions within two-dimensional valencearousal
space. This paper is the first to systematically combine
multiple modalities to expand the available affective
range. Three studies were conducted: Study 1 measured the
emotionality of vibrotactile feedback by itself; Study 2 measured
the perceived emotional content of three bimodal combinations:
vibrotactile + thermal, vibrotactile + visual and
visual + thermal. Study 3 then combined all three modalities.
Results show that combining modalities increases the available
range of emotional states, particularly in the problematic
top-right and bottom-left quadrants of the dimensional
model. We also provide a novel lookup resource for designers
to identify stimuli to convey a range of emotions
A Survey of Prediction and Classification Techniques in Multicore Processor Systems
In multicore processor systems, being able to accurately predict the future provides new optimization opportunities, which otherwise could not be exploited. For example, an oracle able to predict a certain application\u27s behavior running on a smart phone could direct the power manager to switch to appropriate dynamic voltage and frequency scaling modes that would guarantee minimum levels of desired performance while saving energy consumption and thereby prolonging battery life. Using predictions enables systems to become proactive rather than continue to operate in a reactive manner. This prediction-based proactive approach has become increasingly popular in the design and optimization of integrated circuits and of multicore processor systems. Prediction transforms from simple forecasting to sophisticated machine learning based prediction and classification that learns from existing data, employs data mining, and predicts future behavior. This can be exploited by novel optimization techniques that can span across all layers of the computing stack. In this survey paper, we present a discussion of the most popular techniques on prediction and classification in the general context of computing systems with emphasis on multicore processors. The paper is far from comprehensive, but, it will help the reader interested in employing prediction in optimization of multicore processor systems
Enabling Self-aware Smart Buildings by Augmented Reality
Conventional HVAC control systems are usually incognizant of the physical
structures and materials of buildings. These systems merely follow pre-set HVAC
control logic based on abstract building thermal response models, which are
rough approximations to true physical models, ignoring dynamic spatial
variations in built environments. To enable more accurate and responsive HVAC
control, this paper introduces the notion of "self-aware" smart buildings, such
that buildings are able to explicitly construct physical models of themselves
(e.g., incorporating building structures and materials, and thermal flow
dynamics). The question is how to enable self-aware buildings that
automatically acquire dynamic knowledge of themselves. This paper presents a
novel approach using "augmented reality". The extensive user-environment
interactions in augmented reality not only can provide intuitive user
interfaces for building systems, but also can capture the physical structures
and possibly materials of buildings accurately to enable real-time building
simulation and control. This paper presents a building system prototype

Seamless and Secure VR: Adapting and Evaluating Established Authentication Systems for Virtual Reality
Virtual reality (VR) headsets are enabling a wide range of new
opportunities for the user. For example, in the near future users
may be able to visit virtual shopping malls and virtually join
international conferences. These and many other scenarios pose
new questions with regards to privacy and security, in particular
authentication of users within the virtual environment. As a first
step towards seamless VR authentication, this paper investigates
the direct transfer of well-established concepts (PIN, Android
unlock patterns) into VR. In a pilot study (N = 5) and a lab
study (N = 25), we adapted existing mechanisms and evaluated
their usability and security for VR. The results indicate that
both PINs and patterns are well suited for authentication in
VR. We found that the usability of both methods matched the
performance known from the physical world. In addition, the
private visual channel makes authentication harder to observe,
indicating that authentication in VR using traditional concepts
already achieves a good balance in the trade-off between usability
and security. The paper contributes to a better understanding of
authentication within VR environments, by providing the first
investigation of established authentication methods within VR,
and presents the base layer for the design of future authentication
schemes, which are used in VR environments only
A Review of Smart Materials in Tactile Actuators for Information Delivery
As the largest organ in the human body, the skin provides the important
sensory channel for humans to receive external stimulations based on touch. By
the information perceived through touch, people can feel and guess the
properties of objects, like weight, temperature, textures, and motion, etc. In
fact, those properties are nerve stimuli to our brain received by different
kinds of receptors in the skin. Mechanical, electrical, and thermal stimuli can
stimulate these receptors and cause different information to be conveyed
through the nerves. Technologies for actuators to provide mechanical,
electrical or thermal stimuli have been developed. These include static or
vibrational actuation, electrostatic stimulation, focused ultrasound, and more.
Smart materials, such as piezoelectric materials, carbon nanotubes, and shape
memory alloys, play important roles in providing actuation for tactile
sensation. This paper aims to review the background biological knowledge of
human tactile sensing, to give an understanding of how we sense and interact
with the world through the sense of touch, as well as the conventional and
state-of-the-art technologies of tactile actuators for tactile feedback
delivery
Green multimedia: informing people of their carbon footprint through two simple sensors
In this work we discuss a new, but highly relevant, topic to the multimedia community; systems to inform individuals of their carbon footprint, which could ultimately effect change in community carbon footprint-related activities. The reduction of carbon emissions is now an important policy driver of many governments, and one of the major areas of focus is in reducing the energy demand from the consumers i.e. all of us individually.
In terms of CO2 generated from energy consumption, there are three predominant factors, namely electricity usage, thermal related costs, and transport usage. Standard home electricity and heating sensors can be used to measure the former two aspects, and in this paper we evaluate a novel technique to estimate an individual's transport-related carbon emissions through the use of a simple wearable accelerometer.
We investigate how providing this novel estimation of transport-related carbon emissions through an interactive web site and mobile phone app engages a set of users in becoming more aware of their carbon emissions. Our evaluations involve a group of 6 users collecting 25 million accelerometer readings and 12.5 million power readings vs. a control group of 16 users collecting 29.7 million power readings
