Eigenvector Synchronization, Graph Rigidity and the Molecule Problem
The graph realization problem has received a great deal of attention in
recent years, due to its importance in applications such as wireless sensor
networks and structural biology. In this paper, we extend on previous work and
propose the 3D-ASAP algorithm, for the graph realization problem in
, given a sparse and noisy set of distance measurements. 3D-ASAP
is a divide and conquer, non-incremental and non-iterative algorithm, which
integrates local distance information into a global structure determination.
Our approach starts with identifying, for every node, a subgraph of its 1-hop
neighborhood graph, which can be accurately embedded in its own coordinate
system. In the noise-free case, the computed coordinates of the sensors in each
patch must agree with their global positioning up to some unknown rigid motion,
that is, up to translation, rotation and possibly reflection. In other words,
to every patch there corresponds an element of the Euclidean group Euc(3) of
rigid transformations in , and the goal is to estimate the group
elements that will properly align all the patches in a globally consistent way.
Furthermore, 3D-ASAP successfully incorporates information specific to the
molecule problem in structural biology, in particular information on known
substructures and their orientation. In addition, we also propose 3D-SP-ASAP, a
faster version of 3D-ASAP, which uses a spectral partitioning algorithm as a
preprocessing step for dividing the initial graph into smaller subgraphs. Our
extensive numerical simulations show that 3D-ASAP and 3D-SP-ASAP are very
robust to high levels of noise in the measured distances and to sparse
connectivity in the measurement graph, and compare favorably to similar
state-of-the art localization algorithms.Comment: 49 pages, 8 figure
Surveying Position Based Routing Protocols for Wireless Sensor and Ad-hoc Networks
A focus of the scientific community is to design network oriented position-based routing protocols and this has resulted in a very high number of algorithms, different in approach and performance and each suited only to particular applications. However, though numerous, very few position-based algorithms have actually been adopted for commercial purposes. This article is a survey of almost 50 position-based routing protocols and it comes as an aid in the implementation of this type of routing in various applications which may need to consider the advantages and pitfalls of position-based routing. An emphasis is made on geographic routing, whose notion is clarified as a more restrictive and more efficient type of position-based routing. The protocols are therefore divided into geographic and non-geographic routing protocols and each is characterized according to a number of network design issues and presented in a comparative manner from multiple points of view. The main requirements of current general applications are also studied and, depending on these, the survey proposes a number of protocols for use in particular application areas. This aims to help both researchers and potential users assess and choose the protocol best suited to their interest

Many networks have nodes located in physical space, with links more common
between closely spaced pairs of nodes. For example, the nodes could be wireless

Identifying Infection Sources and Regions in Large Networks
Identifying the infection sources in a network, including the index cases
that introduce a contagious disease into a population network, the servers that
inject a computer virus into a computer network, or the individuals who started
a rumor in a social network, plays a critical role in limiting the damage
caused by the infection through timely quarantine of the sources. We consider
the problem of estimating the infection sources and the infection regions
(subsets of nodes infected by each source) in a network, based only on
knowledge of which nodes are infected and their connections, and when the
number of sources is unknown a priori. We derive estimators for the infection
sources and their infection regions based on approximations of the infection
sequences count. We prove that if there are at most two infection sources in a
geometric tree, our estimator identifies the true source or sources with
probability going to one as the number of infected nodes increases. When there
are more than two infection sources, and when the maximum possible number of
infection sources is known, we propose an algorithm with quadratic complexity
to estimate the actual number and identities of the infection sources.
Simulations on various kinds of networks, including tree networks, small-world
networks and real world power grid networks, and tests on two real data sets
are provided to verify the performance of our estimators
