A guided tour of asynchronous cellular automata
Research on asynchronous cellular automata has received a great amount of
attention these last years and has turned to a thriving field. We survey the
recent research that has been carried out on this topic and present a wide
state of the art where computing and modelling issues are both represented.Comment: To appear in the Journal of Cellular Automat
User involvement in healthcare technology development and assessment: Structured literature review
Purpose – Medical device users are one of the principal stakeholders of medical device technologies. User involvement in medical device technology development and assessment is central to meet their needs.
Design/methodology/approach – A structured review of literature, published from 1980 to 2005 in peer-reviewed journals, was carried out from social science perspective to investigate the practice of user involvement in the development and assessment of medical device technologies. This was followed by qualitative thematic analysis.
Findings – It is found that users of medical devices include clinicians, patients, carers and others. Different kinds of medical devices are developed and assessed by user involvement. The user involvement occurs at different stages of the medical device technology lifecycle and the degree of user involvement is in the order of design stage > testing and trials stage > deployment stage > concept stage. Methods most commonly used for capturing users’ perspectives are usability tests, interviews and questionnaire surveys.
Research limitations/implications – We did not review the relevant literature published in engineering, medical and nursing fields, which might have been useful.
Practical implications – Consideration of the users’ characteristics and the context of medical device use is critical for developing and assessing medical device technologies from users’ perspectives.
Originality/value – This study shows that users of medical device technologies are not homogeneous but heterogeneous, in several aspects, and their needs, skills and working environments vary. This is important consideration for incorporating users’ perspectives in medical device technologies.

On Termination for Faulty Channel Machines
A channel machine consists of a finite controller together with several fifo
channels; the controller can read messages from the head of a channel and write
messages to the tail of a channel. In this paper, we focus on channel machines
with insertion errors, i.e., machines in whose channels messages can
spontaneously appear. Such devices have been previously introduced in the study
of Metric Temporal Logic. We consider the termination problem: are all the
computations of a given insertion channel machine finite? We show that this
problem has non-elementary, yet primitive recursive complexity
Recent advances on simulation and theory of hydrogen storage in metal–organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks
This critical review covers the application of computer simulations, including quantum calculations (ab initio and DFT), grand canonical Monte-Carlo simulations, and molecular dynamics simulations, to the burgeoning area of the hydrogen storage by metal–organic frameworks and covalent-organic frameworks. This review begins with an overview of the theoretical methods obtained from previous studies. Then strategies for the improvement of hydrogen storage in the porous materials are discussed in detail. The strategies include appropriate pore size, impregnation, catenation, open metal sites in metal oxide parts and within organic linker parts, doping of alkali elements onto organic linkers, substitution of metal oxide with lighter metals, functionalized organic linkers, and hydrogen spillover (186 references)
Crystal nucleation mechanism in melts of short polymer chains under quiescent conditions and under shear flow
We present a molecular dynamics simulation study of crystal nucleation from
undercooled melts of n-alkanes, and we identify the molecular mechanism of
homogeneous crystal nucleation under quiescent conditions and under shear flow.
We compare results for n-eicosane(C20) and n-pentacontahectane(C150), i.e. one
system below the entanglement length and one above. Under quiescent conditions,
we observe that entanglement does not have an effect on the nucleation
mechanism. For both chain lengths, the chains first align and then straighten
locally. Then the local density increases and finally positional ordering sets
in. At low shear rates the nucleation mechanism is the same as under quiescent
conditions, while at high shear rates the chains align and straighten at the
same time. We report on the effects of shear rate and temperature on the
nucleation rates and estimate the critical shear rates, beyond which the
nucleation rates increase with the shear rate. We show that the viscosity of
the system is not affected by the crystalline nuclei.Comment: 9 page
Immunotronics - novel finite-state-machine architectures with built-in self-test using self-nonself differentiation
A novel approach to hardware fault tolerance is demonstrated that takes inspiration from the human immune system as a method of fault detection. The human immune system is a remarkable system of interacting cells and organs that protect the body from invasion and maintains reliable operation even in the presence of invading bacteria or viruses. This paper seeks to address the field of electronic hardware fault tolerance from an immunological perspective with the aim of showing how novel methods based upon the operation of the immune system can both complement and create new approaches to the development of fault detection mechanisms for reliable hardware systems. In particular, it is shown that by use of partial matching, as prevalent in biological systems, high fault coverage can be achieved with the added advantage of reducing memory requirements. The development of a generic finite-state-machine immunization procedure is discussed that allows any system that can be represented in such a manner to be "immunized" against the occurrence of faulty operation. This is demonstrated by the creation of an immunized decade counter that can detect the presence of faults in real tim
