The way forward

For the last few decades the study of disks around stars young and old and of different types have progressed significantly. During the same time a completely new discipline, the study of exoplanets, planets orbiting stars other than our Sun, have emerged. Both these fields, which are interconnected, have benefited from the development of new instrumentation, and especially by telescopes and detectors deployed in space. In this chapter we are describing the state of the art of such instruments and make an inventory of what is being currently developed. We also state some of the requirements of the next steps and what type of instruments will lead the way forward.Comment: 25 pages, 4 figure

The Greek Economy: Which Way Forward?

In the past 6 years the Greek economy has gone through a massive adjustment at a steep price. The economy finally grew in 2014, by 0.6 percent, but the recovery is weak, slow and fragile.This paper argues that prolonged mass unemployment and reduced living standards, brought about by years of recession and budget cuts, are unnecessary, and that a robust recovery is feasible. It presents an alternative macroeconomic scenario with a moderate fiscal stimulus, which brings the economy much closer to full employment over the next five years, with a lower net debt than currently projected by the IMF. This alternative is just one of many possible scenarios, some of which might include debt cancellation, or more help from the European Central Bank in maintaining low interest rates, especially in light of its recently announced quantitative easing program. The current program, which forecasts a weak recovery with many downside risks, as well as continued mass unemployment in the years ahead, should be replaced with policies that offer a much stronger and faster recovery

Unemployment: the way forward for Europe

This paper was originally delivered as a TSB Forum lecture in Glasgow on Thursday 28 October, 1993. Professor Layard argues that unemployment must be reduced permanently below the intolerable levels of the 1980s and early 1990s. To achieve this, reforms must be made in the areas of training and job subsidies for those unemployed for 6-12 months, in training of young people, and in systems of wage determination

Personal branding for librarians: The way forward

Librarians have always been labelled as knowledge gatekeepers and persons who ‘shusshhh’ people around. However, that may be true years and decades ago. Going forward, do we librarians want to be labelled as such? A brand is a promise delivered. It is our reputation and legacy. Branding is a practice of producing trust which when we market our services, we do so with a promise to meet or exit the expectation of the customer. Academicians talk and discuss the importance of personal branding with fellow students all the time. However some students are just too sceptical to agree and follow the path and information which have been identified for them. Many students are unaware that personal branding does not happen overnight. It takes quite a while for a person to have a personal brand which would suit a person and does not look fake on him or her. This paper discusses the importance of personal branding for all future librarians and how it would assist them to succeed in the challenging working world. It also discuses on how UiTM would create and mould its outstanding future librarians

The Way Forward: From Sanctions to Supports

The New York City Working Group on School Transformation brought together education practitioners, school reformers, policy-makers, advocates, and parent and student leaders to propose alternatives to the school closings policy of the New York City Department of Education (DOE). (See the list of Working Group members in Appendix 1.) The group was initiated by the New York City Coalition for Educational Justice and coordinated by the Annenberg Institute for School Reform following the fall 2011 conference Effective Alternatives to School Closings: Transforming Struggling Schools in New York City. This report presents the Working Group's conclusions about the limitations of school closings and a set of recommendations for systemic responses to the needs of struggling schools

Draws together findings from the chain of analyses on Pakistan's Indus Basin, distinguishing between the relative significance of different scenarios, impacts, and adaptations, and highlighting recommendations for research, planning, and policies that can help expand the range of options for Indus Basin management. Key findings include: (1)The 1991 Provincial Water Allocation Accord (DIVACRD) remains a critical hydrologic constraint; (2) Future climate risks will likely impact the macro-economy and households; (3) Non-farm household incomes will suffer more due to increased crop prices; (4) An increase in basin-wide storage will increase the hydropower generation and minimize the impacts of extreme events; (5) Different adaptation investments show potential to minimize the impacts of future climate risks and meet food security objectives; (6) Climate change will likely impact future food availability nationwide; and (7) Groundwater depletion in the fresh water area and basin-wide salinity issues will grow worse with no policy intervention
