Trail records and navigational learning
An emerging wave of 'ambient' technologies has the potential to support learning in new and particular ways. In this paper we propose a 'trail model' of 'navigational learning' which links some particular learning needs to the potentialities of these technologies. In this context, we outline the design and use of an 'experience recorder', a technology to support learning in museums. In terms of policy for the e-society, these proposals are relevant to the need for personalised and individualised learning support
AUTOFLOW enhancements for documentation and maintenance of scientific applications
The use of the AUTOFLOW system is discussed in terms of improving automated documentation. Flowcharts produced by AUTOFLOW are considered to be much more meaningful than those produced manually in that they are accurate, present complete references between all transfer points, and graphically portray the logical flow by automatic rearrangement of those segments of the program that interact
Design and Performance of the Data Acquisition System for the NA61/SHINE Experiment at CERN
This paper describes the hardware, firmware and software systems used in data
acquisition for the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS accelerator. Special
emphasis is given to the design parameters of the readout electronics for the
40m^3 volume Time Projection Chamber detectors, as these give the largest
contribution to event data among all the subdetectors: events consisting of
8bit ADC values from 256 timeslices of 200k electronic channels are to be read
out with ~100Hz rate. The data acquisition system is organized in "push-data
mode", i.e. local systems transmit data asynchronously. Techniques of solving
subevent synchronization are also discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure
Crew appliance study
Viable crew appliance concepts were identified by means of a thorough literature search. Studies were made of the food management, personal hygiene, housekeeping, and off-duty habitability functions to determine which concepts best satisfy the Space Shuttle Orbiter and Modular Space Station mission requirements. Models of selected appliance concepts not currently included in the generalized environmental-thermal control and life support systems computer program were developed and validated. Development plans of selected concepts were generated for future reference. A shuttle freezer conceptual design was developed and a test support activity was provided for regenerative environmental control life support subsystems
Verifying Policy Enforcers
Policy enforcers are sophisticated runtime components that can prevent
failures by enforcing the correct behavior of the software. While a single
enforcer can be easily designed focusing only on the behavior of the
application that must be monitored, the effect of multiple enforcers that
enforce different policies might be hard to predict. So far, mechanisms to
resolve interferences between enforcers have been based on priority mechanisms
and heuristics. Although these methods provide a mechanism to take decisions
when multiple enforcers try to affect the execution at a same time, they do not
guarantee the lack of interference on the global behavior of the system. In
this paper we present a verification strategy that can be exploited to discover
interferences between sets of enforcers and thus safely identify a-priori the
enforcers that can co-exist at run-time. In our evaluation, we experimented our
verification method with several policy enforcers for Android and discovered
some incompatibilities.Comment: Oliviero Riganelli, Daniela Micucci, Leonardo Mariani, and Yli\`es

Ambient temperature recorder
A temperature data recorder, designated the Ambient Temperature Recorder (ATR-4), was developed at NASA Ames Research Center to meet particular requirements for space life sciences experiments. The small, self-contained, four-channel, battery-powered device records 32 kilobytes of temperature data over a range of -40 to +60 C at four sampling intervals ranging from 1.875 to 15 minutes. Data is stored in its internal electronic memory for later readout by a personal computer
Development of advanced Czochralski growth process to produce low cost 150 kg silicon ingots from a single crucible for technology readiness
Six growth runs used the Kayex-Hameo Automatic Games Logic (AGILE) computer based system for growth from larger melts in the Mod CG2000. The implementation of the melt pyrometer sensor allowed for dip temperature monitoring and usage by the operator/AGILE system. Use of AGILE during recharge operations was successfully evaluated. The tendency of crystals to lose cylindrical shape (spiraling) continued to be a problem. The hygrometer was added to the Furnace Gas Analysis System and used on several growth runs. The gas chromatograph, including the integrator, was also used for more accurate carbon monoxide concentration measurements. Efforts continued for completing the automation of the total Gas Analysis System. An economic analysis, based on revised achievable straight growth rate, is presented
Science and Applications Space Platform (SASP) End-to-End Data System Study
The capability of present technology and the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) to accommodate Science and Applications Space Platforms (SASP) payload user's requirements, maximum service to the user through optimization of the SASP Onboard Command and Data Management System, and the ability and availability of new technology to accommodate the evolution of SASP payloads were assessed. Key technology items identified to accommodate payloads on a SASP were onboard storage devices, multiplexers, and onboard data processors. The primary driver is the limited access to TDRSS for single access channels due to sharing with all the low Earth orbit spacecraft plus shuttle. Advantages of onboard data processing include long term storage of processed data until TRDSS is accessible, thus reducing the loss of data, eliminating large data processing tasks at the ground stations, and providing a more timely access to the data
A real-time digital computer program for the simulation of a single rotor helicopter
A computer program was developed for the study of a single-rotor helicopter on the Langley Research Center real-time digital simulation system. Descriptions of helicopter equations and data, program subroutines (including flow charts and listings), real-time simulation system routines, and program operation are included. Program usage is illustrated by standard check cases and a representative flight case
