    Prospective teachers’ views about creating websites for social studies teaching in distance education

    The present study aims to investigate prospective teachers’ views about creating websites for social studies teaching in distance education. To this end, the study employed the case study method, one of the qualitative research methods. The study group consisted of prospective social studies and classroom teachers studying in the 2019-2020 academic year at the Faculty of Education of a state university located in the Black Sea Region. The study was conducted in two phases: the first phase was carried out with 112 prospective teachers and the second with 12. Data were collected by means of structured and semi-structured interviews and were analyzed by content analysis. Data analysis revealed that websites were a part of the learning-teaching process, that it was important to use websites as educational tools, that websites enabled technology to be integrated into education, that websites enabled the inclusion of up-to-date content for effective teaching of social studies, and that websites provided students with easy access to knowledge through fun learning environments. Based on the results, it can be recommended that the creation and use of websites for the social studies course should be promoted among both working and prospective teachers and that social studies lessons can be taught more effectively with personal educational websites that contain up-to-date, fun, and interactive teaching materials

    Education in Undergraduate Construction Management Degrees - Is it "Construction" or "Management" that is in bold type?

    The proposition of this study is that the content of education in construction management degree programs has changed over time. Content has moved away from construction technology and has moved more towards generic areas of management. Here, issues arise such as prescriptive versus principle-base teaching and the degree to which experiential learning can be provided. This study explores quantifiable data to test the above proposition over an extended period of time for a selected University in Australia. The study looks at course handbook data for the construction management degree including the likes of assigned subject credit points and contact hours. From the analysis, debate and related sources of supporting information are used to extrapolate themes demonstrating the resultant changes in graduate profile arising from the analysis. Comment is also provided on the impact of such changes including the differentiation of university graduates in the past and present. The industry perspective is also canvassed in terms of how changes have affected their expectations relating to employment of University qualified graduates

    A Mixed Method Study of Prospective Teachers\u27 Epistemic Beliefs and Web Evaluation Strategies Concerning Hoax Websites

    Teachers need to be equipped with the tools necessary to evaluate content on the Internet and determine if it is a credible source, or a hoax website since they are expected to instruct and prepare students on how to evaluate the sites which is now a relevant phenomenon. The purpose of the mixed‑method study was to obtain an understanding of the web evaluation strategies of prospective teachers regarding the evaluation of hoax websites and how their epistemic beliefs may influence their evaluation. Another aspect of this study was to find out what outcomes resulted from providing guidance, or not to prospective teachers before evaluating the hoax websites. Seventy‑two prospective teachers from undergraduate education courses completed an online questionnaire, where they evaluated four websites (two hoaxes and two credible) and completed questions regarding their epistemic beliefs. Two groups of prospective teachers were selected. Group A was the control group and Group B was the experiment group. Group A simply took the online questionnaire. However, Group B was provided with an overview of a specific web evaluation strategy, the WWWDOT Framework, before taking the online questionnaire. Sixteen participants were interviewed. Interestingly, almost half of the participants (48.6%), trusted at least one of the hoax websites. The study concluded that teaching the WWWDOT Framework helped to increase the number of people that did not trust the aesthetically appealing hoax website in Group B. Regarding epistemic beliefs, prospective teachers, who displayed feeling‑based epistemic beliefs, tended to trust the hoax website that was aesthetically appealing in Group A. The qualitative results provided additional insights and supported the quantitative data. The qualitative research suggests that lateral reading, spending sufficient time to read and evaluate and knowing the definition of a hoax website as being the most important web evaluation strategies displayed by those that did not trust the hoax websites

    Strata Managers and Educational Mishaps

    In Australia, educational qualifications are a prescribed requirement for licensing within various occupations and professions, and each state and territory has varying degrees of educational aims and objectives. This research paper examines the minimum standards of education and knowledge, which are imposed as a pre-requisite for the licensing of a Strata Manager. The paper traces the historical progression which occurred during the last century to the current decade, and includes an assessment of societies changing needs of the role within the profession. In this regard, it is argued that the educational requirements during the mid 1990s to the early 2000s best served the needs of the consumer in comparison to these last 10 years. The discussion is complemented with data from New South Wales, mapping the educational knowledge fields and comparing this information to the duties and responsibilities of a Strata Manager
