The Evolution of Note Taking: A Study on Traditional Hard Copy Methods vs The Emerging Soft Copy Method

    Get PDF
Being that we both have grown up in the midst of the digital age, we have seen many things evolve, develop, and go electronic; including the way students choose to learn in the classroom. It seems that more and more students are choosing to take notes via laptop, tablet, or smart phone, but with that said it also appears that just as many students are choosing to stick with the more traditional pen and paper way of note taking as well. For our research, we have studied the benefits that may attract students to either note taking method, as well as, researched the cons that may cause students to reject adopting either of the two. Finally, we discuss where note taking may be headed in the future. The answer matters to us because through our research we have been able to come across several studies in which discuss the benefits on digital devices in the classroom. We also find this topic interesting to research and see if the findings in the studies are true and if there are better methods for students to learn in a college classroom environment

An Assistive Technology Manual to Enhance Occupations During Stages of ALS: A Manual for Occupational Therapists and Caregivers

    Get PDF
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to develop a manual for occupational therapists and caregivers that provides assistive technology suggestions to address the needs of an individual with ALS at each stage of the disease. Methods: An extensive literature review was completed on ALS and assistive technology to examine the effects of ALS, course of progression of the disease, variations of the disease, and signs and symptoms. Multiple online databases were utilized including: CINAHL, PubMed, PsycINFO, Academic Search Premier, Google Scholar, and OT search. Further literature reviewed included current assistive technology individuals with ALS found useful related to communication, mobility, and leisure engagement. Results: The ALS assistive technology manual was created based on the Ecology of Human Performance Model of Occupational Performance for OT practitioners. The product, Assistive Technology to Enhance Occupations during Stages of ALS, provides the OT and caregiver with information related to ALS and the progression of the disease throughout the areas of communication, mobility, home modification, and leisure engagement. Conclusion: The manual was created for practicing occupational therapists, other members of the health care team, and caretakers of individuals with ALS. The manual is not inclusive of all assistive technology (AT) options throughout the areas of communication, mobility, home modifications, and leisure engagement, but provides a comprehensive list of common and researched AT to increase performance range within the individual

Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN): Technology Review And Experimental Study on Mobility Effect

    Get PDF
In the past decade, we have witnessed explosive growth in the number of low-power embedded and Internet-connected devices, reinforcing the new paradigm, Internet of Things (IoT). IoT devices like smartphones, home security systems, smart electric meters, garage parking indicators, etc., have penetrated deeply into our daily lives. These IoT devices are increasingly attached and operated in mobile objects like unmanned vehicles, trains, airplanes, etc. The low power wide area network (LPWAN), due to its long-range, low-power and low-cost communication capability, is actively considered by academia and industry as the future wireless communication standard for IoT. However, despite the increasing popularity of mobile IoT, little is known about the suitability of LPWAN for those mobile IoT applications in which nodes have varying degrees of mobility. To fill this knowledge gap, in this thesis:1. We present a thorough review on LPWAN technology focusing on the mobility effect. 2. We conduct an experimental study to evaluate, analyze, and characterize LPWAN in both indoor and outdoor mobile environments. Our experimental results indicate that the performance of LPWAN is surprisingly susceptible to mobility, even to minor human mobility, and the effect of mobility significantly escalates as the distance to the gateway increases. These results call for development of new mobility-aware LPWAN protocols to support mobile IoT

The Benefits of Using Facebook Live for Listening Activities in A Korean University EFL Classroom

    Get PDF
Although the methods and mediums of receiving information have rapidly changed, the main method of presenting listening activities in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom has not. More and more people are using social networking services (SNSs) as their source for daily information, yet most EFL classrooms still use voice only recordings for listening activities. To keep up with the changes and to provide students with real authentic listening experiences, many teachers have begun to use SNSs in their classrooms. This paper examines the strengths and weaknesses of using Facebook Live as an authentic source for listening activities in an EFL classroom. The data collected revealed a variety of strengths and weaknesses of this application, and showed potential for use within the classroom and for allowing students to practice listening outside the classroom

LEARNING FRENCH LANGUAGE ANDROID MOBILE APPLICATION

Learning French language is a mobile application on the Android operating system on smart phones that is designed to assist peoples who love learning French language or businesses or tourist peoples who travel to countries speaking French language, to enhance their knowledge in communicating French language while they are away. As most of people think that French language seem to be difficult to them, by using the device they will not face any problem. And this is one of the things that scared businesses, tourist and others peoples to travel to countries speaking French languages. Today with the development of technology in recent years have spawned a huge number of Android Smartphone users and this is the perfect opportunity to have an application that can help tourists, businesses and others peoples to have the basic of French knowledge. The interactive application enables users learning an experience that is enjoyable and requires practices, which evidently has been successful in teaching people. The difficulty level of the exercises inside the application will be par to the user’s practice. Users will be able to participate in this learning experience by solving puzzles or problems. This application will hopefully and will give more interest and appreciation to users towards French language and will make life easier to them

Occupancy Estimation Using Low-Cost Wi-Fi Sniffers

Real-time measurements on the occupancy status of indoor and outdoor spaces can be exploited in many scenarios (HVAC and lighting system control, building energy optimization, allocation and reservation of spaces, etc.). Traditional systems for occupancy estimation rely on environmental sensors (CO2, temperature, humidity) or video cameras. In this paper, we depart from such traditional approaches and propose a novel occupancy estimation system which is based on the capture of Wi-Fi management packets from users' devices. The system, implemented on a low-cost ESP8266 microcontroller, leverages a supervised learning model to adapt to different spaces and transmits occupancy information through the MQTT protocol to a web-based dashboard. Experimental results demonstrate the validity of the proposed solution in four different indoor university spaces.Comment: Submitted to Balkancom 201

The people who receive the information and buy products/services migrate, nowadays, from traditional to on-line media, a greater number of them is accessing the desired news from specialized sites and from mobile devices, anywhere and anytime. The fast adopting of new technologies affects – and transform – manufacturing, distribution and consume, but to optimize on-line channels is necessary to act objectively, and to found the decisions on performance key indicators. In the process of adapting to these market changes, the marketers have the opportunity to reach a different audience through on-line and mobile instruments. This approach based on real data, facilitated by web analysis, helps companies to focus the efforts and to have success with the new offer versions.digital marketing, blog, mobile marketing, interactive television
