Causality in the Semantics of Esterel: Revisited
We re-examine the challenges concerning causality in the semantics of Esterel
and show that they pertain to the known issues in the semantics of Structured
Operational Semantics with negative premises. We show that the solutions
offered for the semantics of SOS also provide answers to the semantic
challenges of Esterel and that they satisfy the intuitive requirements set by
the language designers
Towards Autopoietic Computing
A key challenge in modern computing is to develop systems that address
complex, dynamic problems in a scalable and efficient way, because the
increasing complexity of software makes designing and maintaining efficient and
flexible systems increasingly difficult. Biological systems are thought to
possess robust, scalable processing paradigms that can automatically manage
complex, dynamic problem spaces, possessing several properties that may be
useful in computer systems. The biological properties of self-organisation,
self-replication, self-management, and scalability are addressed in an
interesting way by autopoiesis, a descriptive theory of the cell founded on the
concept of a system's circular organisation to define its boundary with its
environment. In this paper, therefore, we review the main concepts of
autopoiesis and then discuss how they could be related to fundamental concepts
and theories of computation. The paper is conceptual in nature and the emphasis
is on the review of other people's work in this area as part of a longer-term
strategy to develop a formal theory of autopoietic computing.Comment: 10 Pages, 3 figure
A Formal Executable Semantics of Verilog
This paper describes a formal executable semantics for the Verilog
hardware description language. The goal of our formalization is to provide a
concise and mathematically rigorous reference augmenting the prose of the
official language standard, and ultimately to aid developers of Verilog-based
tools; e.g., simulators, test generators, and verification tools. Our semantics
applies equally well to both synthesizeable and behavioral
designs and is given in a familiar, operational-style within a logic providing
important additional benefits above and beyond static formalization. In
particular, it is executable and searchable so that one can ask
questions about how a, possibly nondeterministic, Verilog program can legally
behave under the formalization. The formalization should not be seen as the
final word on Verilog, but rather as a starting point and basis for community

(Co-)Inductive semantics for Constraint Handling Rules
In this paper, we address the problem of defining a fixpoint semantics for
Constraint Handling Rules (CHR) that captures the behavior of both
simplification and propagation rules in a sound and complete way with respect
to their declarative semantics. Firstly, we show that the logical reading of
states with respect to a set of simplification rules can be characterized by a
least fixpoint over the transition system generated by the abstract operational
semantics of CHR. Similarly, we demonstrate that the logical reading of states
with respect to a set of propagation rules can be characterized by a greatest
fixpoint. Then, in order to take advantage of both types of rules without
losing fixpoint characterization, we present an operational semantics with
persistent. We finally establish that this semantics can be characterized by
two nested fixpoints, and we show the resulting language is an elegant
framework to program using coinductive reasoning.Comment: 17 page
