    This paper presents a wearable biopatch prototype for body surface potential measurement. It combines three key technologies, including mixed-signal system on chip (SoC) technology, inkjet printing technology, and anisotropic conductive adhesive (ACA) bonding technology. An integral part of the biopatch is a low-power low-noise SoC. The SoC contains a tunable analog front end, a successive approximation register analog-to-digital converter, and a reconfigurable digital controller. The electrodes, interconnections, and interposer are implemented by inkjet-printing the silver ink precisely on a flexible substrate. The reliability of printed traces is evaluated by static bending tests. ACA is used to attach the SoC to the printed structures and form the flexible hybrid system. The biopatch prototype is light and thin with a physical size of 16 cm x 16 cm. Measurement results show that low-noise concurrent electrocardiogram signals from eight chest points have been successfully recorded using the implemented biopatch.QC 20130805.     Nocturnal Changes in Knee Cartilage Thickness in Young Healthy Adults

    Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows one to analyze cartilage physiology in vivo. Cartilage deforms during loading, but little is known about its recovery after deformation. Here we study `nocturnal' changes in knee cartilage thickness and whether postexercise deformation differs between morning and evening. Axial magnetic resonance (MR) images were acquired in the right knees of 17 healthy volunteers (age 23.5 +/- 3.0 years) after a normal day, and then after 30 deep knee bends. Coronal images were additionally acquired in 8 of these volunteers after a normal day and then after 2 min of static loading of the leg with 150% body weight. The volunteers then remained unloaded overnight and the same protocol was repeated in the morning. A significant increase (p < 0.01) in cartilage thickness was observed between evening (preexercise) and morning (preexercise): +2.4% in the patella, +8.4% in the medial tibia and +6.2% in the lateral tibia. Deformation in the morning (-6.8/-4.6/-5.1%) was generally greater than that in the evening (-5.4/-3.2/-3.7%), but this difference did not reach statistical significance. No significant difference in the nocturnal thickness increase (or postexercise deformation) was observed between men and women. We conclude that knee cartilage (thickness) recovers overnight by approximately 2-8%, independent of sex. Given the lack of `predeformation' after nocturnal periods of unloading, morning postexercise deformation of the cartilage may have a greater magnitude than evening postexercise deformation.     Student drivers the morning after drinking: A willingness to violate road rules despite typical visual attention

    © 2019 Elsevier Ltd Substantial research has investigated the effects of alcohol consumption on cognitive functions. However, little research has been conducted which examines the effects of evening alcohol consumption on next morning driving performance. The current study investigated the effects of a night out involving drinking on students’ morning after simulator driving performance, conducted as a within-subject naturalistic study. Thirty student drivers between the ages of 19–23 participated. Driving performance measures and eye movements were recorded while participants performed a short-simulated motorway driving task between 9 and 10 a.m., both after an evening consuming alcohol and on a control morning (no alcohol consumed). The task required drivers to respond to a speed limit and hazardous vehicle, with driving performance being compared over four road sections (speed reduction section, hazard section and two control sections). Sleep duration the night before the drives and breath alcohol content immediately before each drive were recorded. The main findings indicate that despite the majority of drivers being legal to drive, in the morning after condition drivers tended to travel at higher maximum speeds, travel for a longer period of time over the speed limit and demonstrate a larger variance in speed. However, no differences were found in visual attention measures. These findings suggest that the morning after drinking is associated with dangerous driving behaviour in terms of violating road rules even when no deficits in attention are observed. The implications for road safety are discussed, focusing on informative programmes to educate drivers of the dangers associated with morning after driving

    Early-Morning and Late-Night Maximal Runs: Metabolic and Perceived Exertion Outcomes

    People may exercise at the ends of their day to fit activity into their schedule; the purpose of this investigation was to determine if metabolic or perceived exertion outcomes differed between maximal runs early in the morning and late at night. After consuming a standardized, glucose drink, thirteen recreationally active individuals completed an early-morning and a late-night run on the treadmill while researchers measured metabolic (aerobic capacity and substrate usage) and perceived exertion outcomes. Point of application #1: Aerobic capacity (maximal consumption of oxygen) and the usage of fat as a fuel to support energy production during exercise were similar between runs. Point of application #2: Maximal perceived exertion (Borg’s 6-20) was similar during early-morning and late-night runs. Point of application #3: While research indicates that people may prefer activity in the morning or evening, and this might impact metabolic responses to the exercise bout, most of our participants (n=8) identified with no preference for exercising in the early-morning or late-night.     This paper uses a VAR to investigate four possible explanations of the extended slump in Japanese economic activity over the 1990s: the absence of bold and consistent fiscal stimulus; the limited room for expansionary monetary policy due to a liquidity trap; overinvestment and debt overhang; and disruption of financial intermediation. The results indicate that all of these factors played a role, but that the major explanation is disruption in financial intermediation, largely operating through the impact of changes in domestic asset prices on bank lending.

    Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP) is not just 'Morning Sickness' : data from a prospective cohort study

    Background: Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is usually called ‘morning sickness’. This is felt by sufferers to trivialise the condition. Symptoms have been described as occurring both before and after noon, but daily symptom patterns have not been clearly described and statistically modelled to enable the term ‘morning sickness’ to be accurately analysed. Aim: To describe the daily variation in nausea and vomiting symptoms during early pregnancy in a group of sufferers. Design and setting: A prospective cohort study of females recruited from 15 May 2014 to 17 February 2017 by Swiss Precision Diagnostics (SPD) Development Company Limited, which was researching hormone levels in early pregnancy and extended its study to include the description of pregnancy symptoms. Method: Daily symptom diaries of nausea and vomiting were kept by females who were trying to conceive. They also provided daily urine samples, which when analysed enabled the date of ovulation to be determined. Data from 256 females who conceived during the first month of the study are included in this article. Daily symptom patterns and changes in daily patterns by week of pregnancy were modelled. Functional data analysis was used to produce estimated symptom probability functions. Results: There was a peak probability of nausea in the morning, a lower but sustained probability of nausea throughout the day, and a slight peak in the evening. Vomiting had a defined peak incidence in the morning. Conclusion: Referring to nausea and vomiting in pregnancy as simply ‘morning sickness’ is inaccurate, simplistic, and therefore unhelpful
