    Mechanical testing of solid materials at the micro-scale

    Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2002.Includes bibliographical references (p. 145-149).Successful design and fabrication of structures and systems at the micro-scale requires a sound theoretical understanding and reliable experimental data on the mechanical behavior of materials at that scale. Generation of experimental data requires accurate, robust, reliable, versatile and yet simple micro-scale mechanical testing devices. This thesis describes the design, development and applications of materials testing technologies at the micro-scale. Using the rectilinear travel characteristics of compound flexures, two novel testing machines have been designed and built to conduct tension, bending and indentation tests in the force regime of 10 pN - 35 N and displacement regime of 20 nm - 6 mm. These machines have been used in measuring the mechanical properties of free-standing gold thin films, rolled metallic foils, elastomeric fibers and other materials. Numerical simulations of the mechanical behavior of gold thin films and rolled copper foils have been conducted and compared with experimental results.     Human-centered Electric Prosthetic (HELP) Hand

    Through a partnership with Indian non-profit Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti, we designed a functional, robust, and and low cost electrically powered prosthetic hand that communicates with unilateral, transradial, urban Indian amputees through a biointerface. The device uses compliant tendon actuation, a small linear servo, and a wearable garment outfitted with flex sensors to produce a device that, once placed inside a prosthetic glove, is anthropomorphic in both look and feel. The prosthesis was developed such that future groups can design for manufacturing and distribution in India

    BIM Standards for Roads and Related Transportation Assets

    With the industry foundation classes (IFC) building information modeling (BIM) standard (ISO 16739) being adopted by AASHTO as the national standard for modeling bridge and road infrastructure projects, there comes a great opportunity to upgrade the INDOT model development standard of roads and related assets to 2D+3D BIM. This upgrade complies with the national standard and creates a solid foundation for preserving accurate asset information for lifecycle data needs. This study reviewed the current modeling standards for drainage and pavement at different state DOTs and investigated the interoperability between state-of-the-art design modeling software and IFC. It was found that while the latest modeling software is capable of supporting interoperability with IFC, there remain gaps that must be addressed to achieve smooth interoperability for supporting life cycle asset data management. Specifically, the prevalent use of IfcBuildingElementProxy and IfcCourse led to a lack of differentiation in the use of IFC entities for the representations of different components, such as inlets, outfalls, conduits, and different concrete pavement layers. This, in turn, caused challenges in the quality assurance (QA) of IFC models and rendered the conventional model view definition (MVD)-based model checking insufficient. To address these gaps and push forward BIM for infrastructure at INDOT, efforts were made in this project to initially create model development instruction manuals that can serve as the foundation for further development and the eventual establish a consistent and comprehensive IFC-based modeling standards and protocols. In addition, automated object classification leveraging invariant signatures of architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) objects was investigated. Correspondingly, a QA method and tool was developed to check and identify the different components in an IFC model. The developed tool achieved 91% accuracy on drainage and 100% accuracy in concrete pavement in its tested performance.     Design descriptions to support reasoning about tolerances

    This thesis is concerned with the use of Artificial Intelligence techniques to support human designers. The thesis argues that support for human designers can be improved by adopting an Al-based rather than a geometry-based approach to engineering design. Design Support Systems (DSSs) are proposed as an effective means of delivering this improved support. Representing and reasoning about tolerance statements in design is introduced as a valid area to test these claims. Tolerance statements describe the allowable variations in the geometry of a designed artefact. Two distinct, but related problems involving the use of toler¬ ance statements in design are tackled, namely: tolerance combination (including the way tolerance distributions combine), and tolerance allocation. The problem of tolerance combination (and distribution) involves determining the necessary consequences of the application of known tolerance statements to one or more designed artefact features. Tolerance allocation concerns the assignment of tol¬ erance statements during the design process. Solutions to this second problem are essential before manufactured instances of designed artefacts can be tested for compliance with design descriptions. The use of an experimental DSS, the Edinburgh Designer System (EDS), to solve design problems is illustrated. The implementation of techniques to im¬ prove the support of tolerance combination and tolerance allocation is described and where possible has been tested using EDS. The way that design is situated within the product creation process is investigated and the derivation of parts list information from an EDS design description is demonstrated. The thesis con¬ cludes that the Al-based approach can improve support for human designers, but that further research will be required to demonstrate the effective delivery of this support through DSSs
