The Future of Financial Liberalization in South Asia

    Get PDF
The paper defines financial liberalization, distinguishing between liberalization of domestic financial markets and capital account convertibility. It then examines the stages and the strategy of Indian financial reform. The Indian strategy followed a well thought out sequence whereby full capital account liberalization was to come after deepening domestic markets, and improving government finances. One alone is dangerous without the others. The experience of the global crisis has validated the Indian strategy and also shown that foreign entry has benefits but cannot resolve all issues. Deepening domestic markets and better domestic and international regulation is a necessary prerequisite for full convertibility. The direction of future liberalization should be such as meets Indian needs of financial inclusion, infrastructure finance, and domestic market deepening.liberalization, capital account convertibility, regulation, inclusion, markets.

    Portugal Telecom takeover defense

    Get PDF
This Masters Thesis aims to be used in class for teaching purposes. The primary objective of the case is to understand the way critical anti-takeover measures can be used in a hostile takeover environment. The case portrays not only all defensive tools used by PT against Sonaecom (conditioned by the Portuguese Securities Code) but also all major interactions with relevant stakeholders. Communication is positioned as a central tool to stakeholders’ interaction. As a consequence of that, students are supposed to comprehend how PT used this instrument to implement its defensive strategy. This Masters Thesis was written essentially from PT’s perspective but it also includes all available Sonacom’s public statements and data. It joins several different points of view (from PT’s CEO and top management to PT’s employees and labor unions). Therefore, it is not supposed to mach exactly to one’s perspective of Sonecom’s takeover attempt but instead to be an aggregate view of the case. The mains idea is to promote debate in order to create an interactive class environment among session’s attendants. Main areas developed in this Thesis are Mergers and Acquisitions, Corporate Communication and Corporate Governance. The case's recommended questions are in line with these areas. Suggested answers for these questions are balanced with some academic documentation that can be complemented with some in-class notes according to the session's objectives

Crowdfunding is an emerging international financial activity often performed via internet mediated platform. With the rapid growth of this financial system, rising risks would influence participant’s decision making. In this study, we examine the process of a typical crowdfunding activity, pre-ordering pledging as well as its coming risks. Based on the analysis, we combine Evolutionary Stable Strategy (ESS) and General Bass Model (GBM) to build decision-making models for pre-ordering pledging theoretically where risk factors are taken into account. Finally, evolutionary game simulation system is built to simulate the dynamic decision-making behavior in a risk changing environments. The simulation results demonstrate that the currency exchange rate give great impact on international participant’s decision-making behavior in crowdfunding. Low exchange rate brings less investment decision from the investor and high exchange rate leads to overheated investment which challenges funder’s diligence. Project system risk may infest the participant’s decisions-making process and cause ambiguity at the end. Limitation and managerial suggestions are discussed

Costs and benefits of superfast broadband in the UK

    Get PDF
This paper was commissioned from LSE Enterprise by Convergys Smart Revenue Solutions to stimulate an open and constructive debate among the main stakeholders about the balance between the costs, the revenues, and the societal benefits of ‘superfast’ broadband. The intent has been to analyse the available facts and to propose wider perspectives on economic and social interactions. The paper has two parts: one concentrates on superfast broadband deployment and the associated economic and social implications (for the UK and its service providers), and the other considers alternative social science approaches to these implications. Both parts consider the potential contribution of smart solutions to superfast broadband provision and use. Whereas Part I takes the “national perspective” and the “service provider perspective”, which deal with the implications of superfast broadband for the UK and for service providers, Part II views matters in other ways, particularly by looking at how to realise values beyond the market economy, such as those inherent in neighbourliness, trust and democrac
