    The electronic, physical, biological and environmental factors involved in the automated remote tracking of the Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus) are identified. The current status of the manatee as an endangered species is provided. Brief descriptions of existing tracking and position locating systems are presented to identify the state of the art in these fields. An analysis of energy media is conducted to identify those with the highest probability of success for this application. Logistic questions such as the means of attachment and position of any equipment to be placed on the manatee are also investigated. Power sources and manateeborne electronics encapsulation techniques are studied and the results of a compter generated DF network analysis are summarized

    The document reports on the major findings from a definition study to appraise the options to develop fish tracking equipment, in particular tags and data logging systems, in order to improve the effeciency of the Agency tracking studies and to obtain a greater understanding of fish biology. The definition study was in two parts. The first, Phase 1, collated and evaluated all the known tracking systems that may be suitable for studies of fish which are either produced commercially or have been constructed for specific in-house studies. Phase 2 was an evaluation of all the tracking equipment considered to merit further investigation in Phase 1. The deficiencies between existing and required technologies to improve the efficiency of Agency's tracking studies and to obtain a greater understanding of fish biology are also identified

    Design criteria and technology requirements for a system of radar reference devices to be fixed to the surfaces of the inner planets are discussed. Offshoot applications include the use of radar corner reflectors as landing beacons on the planetary surfaces and some deep space applications that may yield a greatly enhanced knowledge of the gravitational and electromagnetic structure of the solar system. Passive retroreflectors with dimensions of about 4 meters and weighing about 10 kg are feasible for use with orbiting radar at Venus and Mars. Earth-based observation of passive reflectors, however, would require very large and complex structures to be delivered to the surfaces. For Earth-based measurements, surface transponders offer a distinct advantage in accuracy over passive reflectors. A conceptual design for a high temperature transponder is presented. The design appears feasible for the Venus surface using existing electronics and power components

    The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is quite a vast subject. It is used for so many different applications. The most developed area of research has first been to track animals. Nowadays, many pets have a chip hidden in their neck that permits to identify them very specifically as the information in the chip is unique. Some researches have then been oriented on the supply chain area. Unfortunately, as the technology is quite new, a lot of issues have not been solved yet. The purpose of this Master Thesis is to gather, to sort out and to clarify the more information on RFID technology as possible. Following this objective, the Master Thesis is articulated in three main parts. First, data transmission is explained so that the basis of the technology would be understood and this would also clarify some problems encountered later in the report. Then, the technology itself is described. As you will read, the principle looks pretty simple at first sight but then when going deeper in the working of it, you will see that it is not. While presenting the variety of different systems that coexist on the market, the problem faced by the enterprises to chose the best suitable one would become obvious. The thesis helps clarifying all of that. Finally the application of the technology in the supply chain, with its advantages and limitations is presented. I hope the knowledge put into this Master Thesis would clarify the world of the Radio Frequency Identification

    A micro-transponder for precision tracking of underwater targets

    A prototype micro-transponder has been designed and built to track, in real-time, the positions of objects or animals within the water column. Commercially available data storage tags, which help monitor the behavior of underwater animals, do not provide real-time interrogation and data dissemination capabilities in a form factor and acoustic frequency band acceptable for active tracking applications. This prototype is 18.5 cm3 and weighs 43.7 g in air. It operates at an acoustic frequency of 160 kHz and uses a mixed-signal topology with low-power components and a microcontroller, which allows for firmware updates and addition of external sensors. It is powered by a lithium battery that provides enough energy for an 8-day deployment at a 1-second interrogation interval. Tests carried out in a tank confirmed the functionality of the design with coded replies being transmitted at source levels of 167 dB re 1 microPa at 1 m

    A conceptual approach for examining the full potential of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) for the general aviation community is presented. Aspects of an experimental program to demonstrate these concepts are discussed. The report concludes with the observation that the true potential of GPS can only be exploited by utilization in concert with a data link. The capability afforded by the combination of position location and reporting stimulates the concept of GPS providing the auxiliary functions of collision avoidance, and approach and landing guidance. A series of general recommendations for future NASA and civil community efforts in order to continue to support GPS for general aviation are included

The phase control concept centers around the notation of an active retrodirective phased array as a means of pointing the beam to the appropriate spot on Earth.
