Interdiction Problems on Planar Graphs
Interdiction problems are leader-follower games in which the leader is
allowed to delete a certain number of edges from the graph in order to
maximally impede the follower, who is trying to solve an optimization problem
on the impeded graph. We introduce approximation algorithms and strong
NP-completeness results for interdiction problems on planar graphs. We give a
multiplicative -approximation for the maximum matching
interdiction problem on weighted planar graphs. The algorithm runs in
pseudo-polynomial time for each fixed . We also show that
weighted maximum matching interdiction, budget-constrained flow improvement,
directed shortest path interdiction, and minimum perfect matching interdiction
are strongly NP-complete on planar graphs. To our knowledge, our
budget-constrained flow improvement result is the first planar NP-completeness

Size versus truthfulness in the house allocation problem
We study the House Allocation problem (also known as the Assignment problem), i.e., the problem of allocating a set of objects among a set of agents, where each agent has ordinal preferences (possibly involving ties) over a subset of the objects. We focus on truthful mechanisms without monetary transfers for finding large Pareto optimal matchings. It is straightforward to show that no deterministic truthful mechanism can approximate a maximum cardinality Pareto optimal matching with ratio better than 2. We thus consider randomized mechanisms. We give a natural and explicit extension of the classical Random Serial Dictatorship Mechanism (RSDM) specifically for the House Allocation problem where preference lists can include ties. We thus obtain a universally truthful randomized mechanism for finding a Pareto optimal matching and show that it achieves an approximation ratio of eovere-1. The same bound holds even when agents have priorities (weights) and our goal is to find a maximum weight (as opposed to maximum cardinality) Pareto optimal matching. On the other hand we give a lower bound of 18 over 13 on the approximation ratio of any universally truthful Pareto optimal mechanism in settings with strict preferences. In the case that the mechanism must additionally be non-bossy, an improved lower bound of eovere-1 holds. This lower bound is tight given that RSDM for strict preference lists is non-bossy. We moreover interpret our problem in terms of the classical secretary problem and prove that our mechanism provides the best randomized strategy of the administrator who interviews the applicants

Strong games played on random graphs
In a strong game played on the edge set of a graph G there are two players,
Red and Blue, alternating turns in claiming previously unclaimed edges of G
(with Red playing first). The winner is the first one to claim all the edges of
some target structure (such as a clique, a perfect matching, a Hamilton cycle,
etc.). It is well known that Red can always ensure at least a draw in any
strong game, but finding explicit winning strategies is a difficult and a quite
rare task. We consider strong games played on the edge set of a random graph G
~ G(n,p) on n vertices. We prove, for sufficiently large and a fixed
constant 0 < p < 1, that Red can w.h.p win the perfect matching game on a
random graph G ~ G(n,p)
Robust randomized matchings
The following game is played on a weighted graph: Alice selects a matching
and Bob selects a number . Alice's payoff is the ratio of the weight of
the heaviest edges of to the maximum weight of a matching of size at
most . If guarantees a payoff of at least then it is called
-robust. In 2002, Hassin and Rubinstein gave an algorithm that returns
a -robust matching, which is best possible.
We show that Alice can improve her payoff to by playing a
randomized strategy. This result extends to a very general class of
independence systems that includes matroid intersection, b-matchings, and
strong 2-exchange systems. It also implies an improved approximation factor for
a stochastic optimization variant known as the maximum priority matching
problem and translates to an asymptotic robustness guarantee for deterministic
matchings, in which Bob can only select numbers larger than a given constant.
Moreover, we give a new LP-based proof of Hassin and Rubinstein's bound
Coresets Meet EDCS: Algorithms for Matching and Vertex Cover on Massive Graphs
As massive graphs become more prevalent, there is a rapidly growing need for
scalable algorithms that solve classical graph problems, such as maximum
matching and minimum vertex cover, on large datasets. For massive inputs,
several different computational models have been introduced, including the
streaming model, the distributed communication model, and the massively
parallel computation (MPC) model that is a common abstraction of
MapReduce-style computation. In each model, algorithms are analyzed in terms of
resources such as space used or rounds of communication needed, in addition to
the more traditional approximation ratio.
In this paper, we give a single unified approach that yields better
approximation algorithms for matching and vertex cover in all these models. The
highlights include:
* The first one pass, significantly-better-than-2-approximation for matching
in random arrival streams that uses subquadratic space, namely a
-approximation streaming algorithm that uses space
for constant .
* The first 2-round, better-than-2-approximation for matching in the MPC
model that uses subquadratic space per machine, namely a
-approximation algorithm with memory per
machine for constant .
By building on our unified approach, we further develop parallel algorithms
in the MPC model that give a -approximation to matching and an
-approximation to vertex cover in only MPC rounds and
memory per machine. These results settle multiple open
questions posed in the recent paper of Czumaj~et.al. [STOC 2018]
Sublinear-Time Algorithms for Monomer-Dimer Systems on Bounded Degree Graphs
For a graph , let be the partition function of the
monomer-dimer system defined by , where is the
number of matchings of size in . We consider graphs of bounded degree
and develop a sublinear-time algorithm for estimating at an
arbitrary value within additive error with high
probability. The query complexity of our algorithm does not depend on the size
of and is polynomial in , and we also provide a lower bound
quadratic in for this problem. This is the first analysis of a
sublinear-time approximation algorithm for a # P-complete problem. Our
approach is based on the correlation decay of the Gibbs distribution associated
with . We show that our algorithm approximates the probability
for a vertex to be covered by a matching, sampled according to this Gibbs
distribution, in a near-optimal sublinear time. We extend our results to
approximate the average size and the entropy of such a matching within an
additive error with high probability, where again the query complexity is
polynomial in and the lower bound is quadratic in .
Our algorithms are simple to implement and of practical use when dealing with
massive datasets. Our results extend to other systems where the correlation
decay is known to hold as for the independent set problem up to the critical
activity

The number of matchings in random graphs
We study matchings on sparse random graphs by means of the cavity method. We
first show how the method reproduces several known results about maximum and
perfect matchings in regular and Erdos-Renyi random graphs. Our main new result
is the computation of the entropy, i.e. the leading order of the logarithm of
the number of solutions, of matchings with a given size. We derive both an
algorithm to compute this entropy for an arbitrary graph with a girth that
diverges in the large size limit, and an analytic result for the entropy in
