The logic of equilibrium and abelian lattice ordered groups
We introduce a deductive system Bal which models the logic of balance of opposing forces or of balance between conflicting evidence or influences. ‘‘Truth values’’ are interpreted as deviations from a state of equilibrium, so in this sense, the theorems of Bal are to be interpreted as balanced statements, for which reason there is only one distinguished truth value, namely the one that represents equilibrium. The main results are that the system Bal is algebraizable in the sense of [5] and its equivalent algebraic semantics BAL is definitionally equivalent to the variety of abelian lattice ordered groups, that is, the categories of the algebras in BAL and of l–groups are isomorphic (see [10], Ch.4, 4). We also prove the deduction theorem for Bal and we study different kinds of semantic consequence associated to Bal. Finally, we prove the co-NP-completeness of the tautology problem of Bal.Departamento de Matemátic
Sequent and Hypersequent Calculi for Abelian and Lukasiewicz Logics
We present two embeddings of infinite-valued Lukasiewicz logic L into Meyer
and Slaney's abelian logic A, the logic of lattice-ordered abelian groups. We
give new analytic proof systems for A and use the embeddings to derive
corresponding systems for L. These include: hypersequent calculi for A and L
and terminating versions of these calculi; labelled single sequent calculi for
A and L of complexity co-NP; unlabelled single sequent calculi for A and L.Comment: 35 pages, 1 figur
Generalized Toric Codes Coupled to Thermal Baths
We have studied the dynamics of a generalized toric code based on qudits at
finite temperature by finding the master equation coupling the code's degrees
of freedom to a thermal bath. As a consequence, we find that for qutrits new
types of anyons and thermal processes appear that are forbidden for qubits.
These include creation, annihilation and diffusion throughout the system code.
It is possible to solve the master equation in a short-time regime and find
expressions for the decay rates as a function of the dimension of the
qudits. Although we provide an explicit proof that the system relax to the
Gibbs state for arbitrary qudits, we also prove that above a certain crossing
temperature, qutrits initial decay rate is smaller than the original case for
qubits. Surprisingly this behavior only happens with qutrits and not with other
qudits with .Comment: Revtex4 file, color figures. New Journal of Physics' versio
Categorical Ontology of Complex Systems, Meta-Systems and Theory of Levels: The Emergence of Life, Human Consciousness and Society
Single cell interactomics in simpler organisms, as well as somatic cell interactomics in multicellular organisms, involve biomolecular interactions in complex signalling pathways that were recently represented in modular terms by quantum automata with ‘reversible behavior’ representing normal cell cycling and division. Other implications of such quantum automata, modular modeling of signaling pathways and cell differentiation during development are in the fields of neural plasticity and brain development leading to quantum-weave dynamic patterns and specific molecular processes underlying extensive memory, learning, anticipation mechanisms and the emergence of human consciousness during the early brain development in children. Cell interactomics is here represented for the first time as a mixture of ‘classical’ states that determine molecular dynamics subject to Boltzmann statistics and ‘steady-state’, metabolic (multi-stable) manifolds, together with ‘configuration’ spaces of metastable quantum states emerging from complex quantum dynamics of interacting networks of biomolecules, such as proteins and nucleic acids that are now collectively defined as quantum interactomics. On the other hand, the time dependent evolution over several generations of cancer cells --that are generally known to undergo frequent and extensive genetic mutations and, indeed, suffer genomic transformations at the chromosome level (such as extensive chromosomal aberrations found in many colon cancers)-- cannot be correctly represented in the ‘standard’ terms of quantum automaton modules, as the normal somatic cells can. This significant difference at the cancer cell genomic level is therefore reflected in major changes in cancer cell interactomics often from one cancer cell ‘cycle’ to the next, and thus it requires substantial changes in the modeling strategies, mathematical tools and experimental designs aimed at understanding cancer mechanisms. Novel solutions to this important problem in carcinogenesis are proposed and experimental validation procedures are suggested. From a medical research and clinical standpoint, this approach has important consequences for addressing and preventing the development of cancer resistance to medical therapy in ongoing clinical trials involving stage III cancer patients, as well as improving the designs of future clinical trials for cancer treatments.\ud

Statistical physics of dyons and quark confinement
We present a semiclassical approach to the SU(N) Yang--Mills theory whose
partition function at nonzero temperatures is approximated by a saddle point --
an ensemble of an infinite number of interacting dyons of N kinds. The ensemble
is governed by an exactly solvable 3d quantum field theory, allowing
calculation of correlations functions relevant to confinement. We show that
known criteria of confinement are satisfied in this semiclassical
approximation: (i) the average Polyakov line is zero below some critical
temperature, and nonzero above it, (ii) a quark-antiquark pair has linear
rising potential energy, (iii) the average spatial Wilson loop falls off
exponentially with the area, (iv) N^2 gluons are canceled out from the
spectrum, (v) the critical deconfinement temperature is in good agreement with
lattice data. Using the same approximation, we find confinement for the
exceptional gauge group G(2) and a first-order deconfinement transition, also
in agreement with lattice findings.Comment: Invited talk at the Landau Memorial Conference "Advances in

Boundary Algebra: A Simpler Approach to Boolean Algebra and the Sentential Connectives
Boundary algebra [BA] is a algebra of type , and a simplified notation for Spencer-Brown’s (1969) primary algebra. The syntax of the primary arithmetic [PA] consists of two atoms, () and the blank page, concatenation, and enclosure between ‘(‘ and ‘)’, denoting the primitive notion of distinction. Inserting letters denoting, indifferently, the presence or absence of () into a PA formula yields a BA formula. The BA axioms are A1: ()()= (), and A2: “(()) [abbreviated ‘⊥’] may be written or erased at will,” implying (⊥)=(). The repeated application of A1 and A2 simplifies any PA formula to either () or ⊥. The basis for BA is B1: abc=bca (concatenation commutes & associates); B2, ⊥a=a (BA has a lower bound, ⊥); B3, (a)a=() (BA is a complemented lattice); and B4, (ba)a=(b)a (implies that BA is a distributive lattice). BA has two intended models: (1) the Boolean algebra 2 with base set B={(),⊥}, such that () ⇔ 1 [dually 0], (a) ⇔ a′, and ab ⇔ a∪b [a∩b]; and (2) sentential logic, such that () ⇔ true [false], (a) ⇔ ~a, and ab ⇔ a∨b [a∧b]. BA is a self-dual notation, facilitates a calculational style of proof, and simplifies clausal reasoning and Quine’s truth value analysis. BA resembles C.S. Peirce’s graphical logic, the symbolic logics of Leibniz and W.E. Johnson, the 2 notation of Byrne (1946), and the Boolean term schemata of Quine (1982).Boundary algebra; boundary logic; primary algebra; primary arithmetic; Boolean algebra; calculation proof; G.
