    Resource dimensioning through buffer sampling

    Link dimensioning, i.e., selecting a (minimal) link capacity such that the users’ performance requirements are met, is a crucial component of network design. It requires insight into the interrelationship among the traffic offered (in terms of the mean offered load , but also its fluctuation around the mean, i.e., ‘burstiness’), the envisioned performance level, and the capacity needed. We first derive, for different performance criteria, theoretical dimensioning formulas that estimate the required capacity cc as a function of the input traffic and the performance target. For the special case of Gaussian input traffic, these formulas reduce to c=M+αVc = M + \alpha V, where directly relates to the performance requirement (as agreed upon in a service level agreement) and VV reflects the burstiness (at the timescale of interest). We also observe that Gaussianity applies for virtually all realistic scenarios; notably, already for a relatively low aggregation level, the Gaussianity assumption is justified.\ud As estimating MM is relatively straightforward, the remaining open issue concerns the estimation of VV. We argue that particularly if corresponds to small time-scales, it may be inaccurate to estimate it directly from the traffic traces. Therefore, we propose an indirect method that samples the buffer content, estimates the buffer content distribution, and ‘inverts’ this to the variance. We validate the inversion through extensive numerical experiments (using a sizeable collection of traffic traces from various representative locations); the resulting estimate of VV is then inserted in the dimensioning formula. These experiments show that both the inversion and the dimensioning formula are remarkably accurate

    The pseudo-self-similar traffic model: application and validation

    Since the early 1990¿s, a variety of studies has shown that network traffic, both for local- and wide-area networks, has self-similar properties. This led to new approaches in network traffic modelling because most traditional traffic approaches result in the underestimation of performance measures of interest. Instead of developing completely new traffic models, a number of researchers have proposed to adapt traditional traffic modelling approaches to incorporate aspects of self-similarity. The motivation for doing so is the hope to be able to reuse techniques and tools that have been developed in the past and with which experience has been gained. One such approach for a traffic model that incorporates aspects of self-similarity is the so-called pseudo self-similar traffic model. This model is appealing, as it is easy to understand and easily embedded in Markovian performance evaluation studies. In applying this model in a number of cases, we have perceived various problems which we initially thought were particular to these specific cases. However, we recently have been able to show that these problems are fundamental to the pseudo self-similar traffic model. In this paper we review the pseudo self-similar traffic model and discuss its fundamental shortcomings. As far as we know, this is the first paper that discusses these shortcomings formally. We also report on ongoing work to overcome some of these problems

    Delay Performance of MISO Wireless Communications

    Ultra-reliable, low latency communications (URLLC) are currently attracting significant attention due to the emergence of mission-critical applications and device-centric communication. URLLC will entail a fundamental paradigm shift from throughput-oriented system design towards holistic designs for guaranteed and reliable end-to-end latency. A deep understanding of the delay performance of wireless networks is essential for efficient URLLC systems. In this paper, we investigate the network layer performance of multiple-input, single-output (MISO) systems under statistical delay constraints. We provide closed-form expressions for MISO diversity-oriented service process and derive probabilistic delay bounds using tools from stochastic network calculus. In particular, we analyze transmit beamforming with perfect and imperfect channel knowledge and compare it with orthogonal space-time codes and antenna selection. The effect of transmit power, number of antennas, and finite blocklength channel coding on the delay distribution is also investigated. Our higher layer performance results reveal key insights of MISO channels and provide useful guidelines for the design of ultra-reliable communication systems that can guarantee the stringent URLLC latency requirements.Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication.     Approximations for fork/join systems with inputs from multi-server stations.

    Fork/join stations are commonly used to model synchronization constraints in queuing network models of computer and manufacturing systems. This paper presents an exact analysis of a fork/join station in a closed queuing network with inputs from multi-server stations with two-phase Coxian service distributions. The underlying queue length process is analyzed exactly to determine performance measures such as through put, and distributions of the queue length at the fork/join station. By choosing suitable parameters for the two-phase Coxian distributions, the effect of variability in inputs on system performance is studied. The study reveals that for several system configurations, analysis of the simpler system with exponential inputs provides efficient approximations for performance measures. Both, the exact analysis and the simple approximations of fork/join systems constitute useful building blocks for developing efficient methods for analyzing large queuing networks with fork/join stations.queueing; fork/join; synchronization; assembly systems; closed queuing networks;

    Advanced resource planning as decision support module to ERP.

    In this paper, we show that the planning and decision-support capabilities of the MPC (Manufacturing Planning and Control) system, which forms the core of any ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) package, may be substantively enhanced by including a Decision Support Module (DSM) as an add-on at the midterm planning level. This DSM, called Advanced Resource Planning (ARP), serves as parameter setting process as well as tool for improving the structure of the ERP system itself. The ultimate goal of the DSM is to yield realistic information both for scheduling, sales and marketing, strategic and operational decision making and suppliers and customers.

    The Value-of-Information in Matching with Queues

    We consider the problem of \emph{optimal matching with queues} in dynamic systems and investigate the value-of-information. In such systems, the operators match tasks and resources stored in queues, with the objective of maximizing the system utility of the matching reward profile, minus the average matching cost. This problem appears in many practical systems and the main challenges are the no-underflow constraints, and the lack of matching-reward information and system dynamics statistics. We develop two online matching algorithms: Learning-aided Reward optimAl Matching (LRAM\mathtt{LRAM}) and Dual-LRAM\mathtt{LRAM} (DRAM\mathtt{DRAM}) to effectively resolve both challenges. Both algorithms are equipped with a learning module for estimating the matching-reward information, while DRAM\mathtt{DRAM} incorporates an additional module for learning the system dynamics. We show that both algorithms achieve an O(ϵ+δr)O(\epsilon+\delta_r) close-to-optimal utility performance for any ϵ>0\epsilon>0, while DRAM\mathtt{DRAM} achieves a faster convergence speed and a better delay compared to LRAM\mathtt{LRAM}, i.e., O(δz/ϵ+log(1/ϵ)2))O(\delta_{z}/\epsilon + \log(1/\epsilon)^2)) delay and O(δz/ϵ)O(\delta_z/\epsilon) convergence under DRAM\mathtt{DRAM} compared to O(1/ϵ)O(1/\epsilon) delay and convergence under LRAM\mathtt{LRAM} (δr\delta_r and δz\delta_z are maximum estimation errors for reward and system dynamics). Our results reveal that information of different system components can play very different roles in algorithm performance and provide a systematic way for designing joint learning-control algorithms for dynamic systems

    Parameter Tolerance in Capacity Planning Models

    In capacity planning for a service operation, analytical models based on queueing theory allow the user to quickly estimate the capacity required and to easily experiment with different system designs or configurations, for a given set of input parameters. An input parameter of the model could be inaccurate or may not be known beyond a good guess. In order to determine if the analysis results (and hence the system design) are robust to parameter estimation errors, sensitivity analysis can be performed. We study an alternative approach that involves specifying a tolerance range of a system performance measure and calculating a feasible region of the uncertain parameters for which the performance measure will be within the tolerance range. We illustrate this approach using basic exponential queueing models as well as a model of an order fulfillment operation in a distribution center
