Media and Modernity: the Role of the Printing Press in the Modernization of Western Society
One of the influential factors in the formation of modern society in the Westernworld and subsequently spread to over the world has been the discovery of printing presswhich can be found in the form of printing method, printing company and print media.Since it was firstly used by Gutenberg in about 15th century AD, information which waspreviously delivered through oral medium with a limited audience, then through a methodof printing can be reproduced in large quantities and can be read by more audience, acrossdistance and time. Printing method which encourages the emergence of large printingcompanies and then print media has contributed in transforming modern cultural life ofsociety.In addition, the advent of the printing industries which has transformed intotransnational corporations as well as the emergence of journals and regular newspapersalso contributes significantly in raising public spaces as a medium for discussion andcritical thinking amidst society. Ultimately, this information media transformation brings achange in the state system which is more open and leads to the emergence of ideas ofnationalism which becomes an important milestone in transforming traditional societiesinto modern societies
Sculplexity: Sculptures of Complexity using 3D printing
We show how to convert models of complex systems such as 2D cellular automata
into a 3D printed object. Our method takes into account the limitations
inherent to 3D printing processes and materials. Our approach automates the
greater part of this task, bypassing the use of CAD software and the need for
manual design. As a proof of concept, a physical object representing a modified
forest fire model was successfully printed. Automated conversion methods
similar to the ones developed here can be used to create objects for research,
for demonstration and teaching, for outreach, or simply for aesthetic pleasure.
As our outputs can be touched, they may be particularly useful for those with

Results of recent experiments and numerical simulations are presented, which have been used to establish empirical rules for
the dependence of drop speed on nozzle diameter and drive amplitude for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids printed with a
range of different ink-jet print-head technologies. Experiments were carried out with Xaar, MicroFab and Spectra Dimatix print heads and with solutions of polystyrene in diethyl phthalate as model fluids. These results are compared with
predictions from recent numerical codes developed by collaborators in the University of Leeds, and from simple models for drop-on-demand fluid jetting resulting from physical law
Contextual impacts on industrial processes brought by the digital transformation of manufacturing: a systematic review
The digital transformation of manufacturing (a phenomenon also known as "Industry 4.0" or "Smart Manufacturing") is finding a growing interest both at practitioner and academic levels, but is still in its infancy and needs deeper investigation. Even though current and potential advantages of digital manufacturing are remarkable, in terms of improved efficiency, sustainability, customization, and flexibility, only a limited number of companies has already developed ad hoc strategies necessary to achieve a superior performance. Through a systematic review, this study aims at assessing the current state of the art of the academic literature regarding the paradigm shift occurring in the manufacturing settings, in order to provide definitions as well as point out recurring patterns and gaps to be addressed by future research. For the literature search, the most representative keywords, strict criteria, and classification schemes based on authoritative reference studies were used. The final sample of 156 primary publications was analyzed through a systematic coding process to identify theoretical and methodological approaches, together with other significant elements. This analysis allowed a mapping of the literature based on clusters of critical themes to synthesize the developments of different research streams and provide the most representative picture of its current state. Research areas, insights, and gaps resulting from this analysis contributed to create a schematic research agenda, which clearly indicates the space for future evolutions of the state of knowledge in this field
A portable 3D printer system for the diagnosis and treatment of multidrug-resistant bacteria
Summary: Multidrug-resistant bacteria are a major threat to human health, but broad-spectrum
antibiotics are losing efficacy. There is a need to screen a given drug against
a bacterial infection outside of the laboratory. To address this need, we have designed
and built an inexpensive and easy-to-use 3D-printer-based system that
allows easily readable quantitative tests for the performance of antibacterial
drugs. The platform creates a sterile diagnostic device by using 3D printing,
and the device is filled automatically with growth medium, and then antibiotics
are sprayed onto the medium by ink-jet technology. The sample for testing can
be introduced via a fluid port, and the printer hot bed is used to incubate the device,
allowing operation in the field. Combining advantages from various established
tests of antibacterial performance, this allows the comparison of a specific
antibiotics and bacteria. Also, this system can create and test several antibiotic
formulations for therapeutic use, and we demonstrate this potential by investigating
a mixture of pathogens that are only killed by a mixture of drugs

has been applied successfully to other emerging technologies, referred to as the responsible research and
innovation (RRI) framework programme. A case is then made for the application of this approach in the AM
industry with an illustration of how it might be used
