Few studies have examined help seeking behaviors and the mental health of graduate level counseling students. This study expands on the current research by examining the relationship between mental health help seeking behaviors and self-reported symptoms of psychological distress in graduate level counseling students enrolled in CACREP accredited counseling programs throughout the United States. Survey responses from 271 graduate level counseling students were analyzed. Parametric tests of ANOVA and Multiple regression, and nonparametric analyses of Kruskal-Wallis and Fishers exact test were used. Results from Kruskal-Wallis tests found significant differences in depression, anxiety, and stress scores based on the type of help sought. ANOVA results found statistically significant differences in depression and anxiety scores between sources of help received. Tukey HSD post-hoc analyses found that participants whom sought help from faculty had higher depression scores than those who received no help at all; participants who received no help had lower anxiety scores than both those who sought help from faculty, as well as, those who sought help from both faculty and counseling professionals. Results of Multiple Linear Regression model were significant for both depression and anxiety scores. Findings concluded that seeking faculty help and enrollment in specialty area of counseling in educational settings contributed to the variances in both depression and anxiety scores of participants. Implications for research, teaching, and practice are discussed. Limitations to current study, as well as, considerations for future research are provided

Investigating the Receptivity of Counseling Students toward Receiving Counseling

    Get PDF
This study investigated the perceptions of graduate students in counseling toward seeking counseling as part of the efforts to promote the personal and professional development. The main research question is: what are the perceptions of graduate counseling students toward receiving counseling? The secondary questions are: What are the reasons graduate students in counseling would be willing or reluctant to receive counseling? What are the perceived benefits of counseling? And, finally, what are the perceived drawbacks of counseling? The study is qualitative in nature applying a phenomenological design. The participants were purposefully selected from the Ed.S. program in Counselor Education. Six participants were involved in the study. Data was collected through individual interviews which were analyzed through interpretation and codification to derive themes as they pertained to content analysis. Overall, the results indicated that the participants’ had a positive perception about seeking counseling. However, the participants also shared hindrances that prevented them from seeking counseling

Identifying behaviors of the master teacher

The purpose of this investigation was to determine behaviors of the master teacher and identify factors that have caused states to adopt career ladder plans. Research from effective teaching, states that have passed legislation endorsing career ladder plans, and competencies in Pro*file were sources used for this study. One related study was also used as a review;Twenty-six behaviors were found to define the master teacher. Twenty-four of these behaviors are associated with the CATE/S (Computer Assisted Teacher Evaluation/Supervision) program resulting from the cross-tabulation of behaviors that appeared to be consistent in most sources. Three states provided criteria beyond that for effective performance. The state of Missouri described exemplary performance; California provided criteria for nominating mentor teachers; and New Jersey provided criteria for recognizing master teachers. In addition, twenty attributes were found;Master teachers are brighter and more dedicated than the average. They are better organized and more efficient classroom managers, and better prepared and more thorough in the way they teach. Student achievement gains result from efficient daily planning, thorough planning, thorough preparation, and high expectations that challenge students to achieve until they reach their potential. They possess superior knowledge of their subject matter and superior skills in teaching, having the ability to cause learning. They are clearly recognized among their colleagues as leaders who are willing and able to share their expertise as well as assist other teachers in professional development;Three factors were identified causing states to endorse a career ladder concept. These factors were: (1) action taken prior to the national reports; (2) the influence of Governor Lamar Alexander; and (3) reactions to the national reports

The workshop upon which this report is based drew prominent behavioral and social researchers in men's health and related fields together to develop a consensus about men's health care needs and the ways society and our culture create barriers to the development of healthy lifestyles. It examines the sources of denial and how it and related attitudes can be changed, and develops recommendations to address clinical practice, intervention, communications, and policy issues related to men's health. Identifies gender as a significant factor influencing public health

The relationship between intra-cultural factors and feedback seeking behavior in supervision among counselors-in-training in counselor education programs

    Get PDF
For this research study a cross-sectional correlational survey research design was utilized. Counselors in training both master and doctoral level currently receiving clinical supervision in counselor education programs (n=123) participated in this study. Participants were administered (a) tolerance of ambiguity scale (b) individual power distance scale (c) feedback-seeking frequency scale (d) feedback-seeking source scale and (e) feedback-seeking style scale. Six research questions were the subject of data analyses in this study. Analyses included conducting multivariate multiple regression and simple regression analyses to understand whether tolerance of ambiguity and status identity predict graduate counselors’ feedback-seeking (a) style (b) source and (c) frequency. The purpose of the study is to assess the influence of intra-cultural factors of tolerance of ambiguity and status identity on graduate counselors’ feedback-seeking (a) style (b) source and (c) frequency. The investigation of intra-cultural dimensions is expected to provide a salient beginning to research in the area of within cultural information seeking activity of counselors in training in the counselor education field. The information gained will help clinical supervisors provide information to supervisees that meet their needs and thus improve clinical outcomes. The results of the analyses indicated that tolerance of ambiguity as a cultural variable has a statistically significant difference on the (a) frequency (b) source and (c) type of feedback seeking than status identity. Findings from the current study indicate that counselors in training have a moderate tolerance for ambiguity. Additionally counselors in training prefer monitoring or observational strategies to seek feedback from supervisors and inquiry methods to seek feedback from peers. Further counselors in training have a moderate frequency of seeking feedback. These results indicate that the culture within the counselor education program is characterized as having a low to moderate tolerance for ambiguity. Implications for this study include the importance of developing effective feedback systems that address obstacles and promote effective information processing. Counselor educators should focus on developing strategies that assist their students to embrace and enhance their tolerance of ambiguity which will help them better implement the different counseling concepts and thus influence client outcomes

Behaviors That Eliminate Health Disparities for Racial and Ethnic Minorities: A Narrative Systematic Review

    Get PDF
Within the health care provider-health care recipient relationship the communication must be culturally competent to eliminate barriers to equitable health care for all Americans. This assertion has conceptual grounding in Public Law 106-129 (the Health Care Research and Quality Act of 1999) and Public Law 106-525 (the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research and Education Act of 2000). This narrative systematic review examines this assertion by using selection and exclusion criteria to gather interventions, assessments, and testimonies conducted from 2000-2007. Reports that were not eliminated via these criteria were analyzed to determine the effect of specific practices that were undertaken in interventions, assessments, and testimonies. Which practices does research propose as indispensable to efforts to eliminate health disparities for racial and ethnic minority health care recipients? Findings indicate that culturally competent behaviors by providers and recipients promote effective intercultural communication that eliminates health care disparities, and removes obstacles to care

Mindfully Organizing Collective Teacher Efficacy: A Case Study Of Efficacious Educator Teams

    Get PDF
Collective teacher efficacy (CTE) has well documented positive effects on student outcomes (Goddard et al., 2017), teacher job satisfaction (Buonomo et al., 2020), and educator persistence (Guidetti et al., 2018) in the face of challenging tasks. Characterized by the collective belief in the group’s capability to successfully accomplish tasks associated with their professional practice (Donohoo, 2018), what influences group efficacy belief formation remains an underdeveloped area of academic and practical understanding (Tschannen-Moran et al., 2014). To better understand the influences that shape CTE beliefs, and how those influences contribute to the known sources of CTE, a multiple–case study design was used to conduct focus group interviews with four collectively efficacious elementary school-based educator teams. Affirmed within the findings of this study, an a priori conceptual link between the enabling conditions of CTE (EC-CTE) (Donohoo et al., 2020) and the five mindful organizing behaviors (Weick & Sutcliffe, 2015) was developed. Additionally, heedful interrelating (Weick & Roberts, 1993) was found to have a potential mediating role between the EC-CTE and mindful organizing behaviors, while psychological safety (Edmondson, 1999) was found to have a potential moderating role among all the conditions. Given the findings of four dynamic and interacting conditions that influence CTE beliefs, a complex system of CTE conditions is conceptualized, explained, and situated within the relevant literature

The purpose of this paper is to report the findings of a literature review summary on the topic of the relationship of human psychological characteristics with athletic performance. Two research questions guided its development: (1) Is there any evidence that there is a relationship between individual human psychological characteristics and athletic performance? (2) If there is any evidence that there is a relationship between individual human psychological characteristics and athletic performance, is there further evidence that those individual characteristics translate in some way into group dynamics or attributes that may similarly influence team performance
