    Wall-models for large eddy simulation based on a generic additive-filter formulation

    In this work, the mathematical implications of merging two different turbulence modeling approaches are addressed by deriving the exact hybrid RANS/LES Navier-Stokes equations. These equations are derived by introducing an additive-filter, which linearly combines the RANS and LES operators with a blending function. The equations derived predict additional hybrid terms, which represent the interactions between RANS and LES formulations. Theoretically, the prediction of the hybrid terms demonstrates that the hybridization of the two approaches cannot be accomplished only by the turbulence model equations, as it is claimed in current hybrid RANS/LES models. The importance of the exact hybrid RANS/LES equations is demonstrated by conducting numerical calculations on a turbulent flat-plate boundary layer. Results indicate that the hybrid terms help to maintain an equilibrated model transition when the hybrid formulation switches from RANS to LES. Results also indicate, that when the hybrid terms are not included, the accuracy of the calculations strongly relies on the blending function implemented in the additive-filter. On the other hand, if the exact equations are resolved, results are only weakly affected by the characteristics of the blending function. Unfortunately, for practical applications the hybrid terms cannot be exactly computed. Consequently, a reconstruction procedure is proposed to approximate these terms. Results show, that the model proposed is able to mimic the exact hybrid terms, enhancing the accuracy of current hybrid RANS/LES approaches. In a second effort, the Two Level Simulation (TLS) approach is proposed as a near-wall model for LES. Here, TLS is first extended to compressible flows by deriving the small-scale equations required by the model. The full compressible TLS formulation and the hybrid TLS/LES approach is validated simulating the flow over a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer.     Adaptive Embedded LES of the NASA Hump

    A scheme for adaptive embedded LES is proposed which automatically determines boundaries for LES regions in a hybrid LES-RANS computation, with the goal of minimizing the LES part of the computation for maximum accuracy with minimum cost. The model-invariant hybrid formulation enables this scheme through greater flexibility in the placement of RANS-LES transitions. An adaptive embedded large-eddy simulation is carried out for the NASA hump test case and adaptive meshing is added to show how additional adaptive features may be controlled by the adaptive hybrid scheme

    A new two-scale model for large eddy simulation of wall-bounded flows

    A new hybrid approach to model high Reynolds number wall-bounded turbulent flows is developed based on coupling the two-level simulation (TLS) approach in the inner region with conventional large eddy simulation (LES) away from the wall. This new approach is significantly different from previous near-wall approaches for LES. In this hybrid TLS-LES approach, a very fine small-scale (SS) mesh is embedded inside the coarse LES mesh in the near-wall region. The SS equations capture fine-scale temporal and spatial variations in all three cartesian directions for all three velocity components near the wall. The TLS-LES equations are derived based on defining a new scale separation operator. The TLS-LES equations in the transition region are obtained by blending the TLS large-scale and LES equations. A new incompressible parallel flow solver is developed that accurately and reliably predicts turbulent flows using TLS-LES. The solver uses a primitive variable formulation based on an artificial compressibility approach and a dual time stepping method. The advective terms are discretized using fourth-order energy conservative finite differences. The SS equations are also integrated in parallel, which reduces the overall cost of the TLS-LES approach. The TLS-LES approach is validated and investigated for canonical channel flows, channel flow with adverse pressure gradient and asymmetric plane diffuser flow.     A New Formulation for Hybrid LES-RANS Computations

    Ideally, a hybrid LES-RANS computation would employ LES only where necessary to make up for the failure of the RANS model to provide sufficient accuracy or to provide time-dependent information. Current approaches are fairly restrictive in the placement of LES and RANS regions; an LES-RANS transition in a boundary layer, for example, yields an unphysical log-layer shift. A hybrid computation is formulated here to allow greater control over the placement of LES and RANS regions and the transitions between them. The concept of model invariance is introduced, which provides a basis for interpreting hybrid results within an LES-RANS transition zone. Consequences of imposing model invariance include the addition of terms to the governing equations that compensate for unphysical gradients created as the model changes between RANS and LES. Computational results illustrate the increased accuracy of the approach and its insensitivity to the location of the transition and to the blending function employed

    A Hybrid-Filter Approach to Turbulence Simulation

    Germano (Theor Comput Fluid Dyn 17:225–331, 2004) proposed a hybrid-filter approach, which additively combines an LES-like filter operator (F) and a RANS-like statistical operator (E) using a blending function k: H = kF + (1 − k)E. Using turbulent channel flow as an example, we first conducted a priori tests in order to gain some insights into this hybrid-filter approach, and then performed full simulations to further assess the approach in actual simulations. For a priori tests, two separate simulations, RANS (E) and LES (F), were performed using the same grid in order to construct a hybrid-filtered field (H). It was shown that the extra terms arising out of the hybrid-filtered Navier–Stokes (HFNS) equations provided additional energy transfer from the RANS region to the LES region, thus alleviating the need for the ad hoc forcing term that has been used by some investigators. The complexity of the governing equations necessitated several modifications in order to render it suitable for a full numerical simulation. Despite some issues associated with the numerical implementation, good results were obtained for the mean velocity and skin friction coefficient. The mean velocity profile did not have an overshoot in the logarithmic region for most blending functions, confirming that proper energy transfer from the RANS to the LES region was a key to successful hybrid models. It is shown that Germano’s hybrid-filter approach is a viable and mathematically more appealing approach to simulate high Reynolds number turbulent flows

    A FILTER-FORCING TURBULENCE MODEL FOR LARGE EDDY SIMULATION INCORPORATING THE COMPRESSIBLE POOR MAN\u27S NAVIER--STOKES EQUATIONS

    A new approach to large-eddy simulation (LES) based on the use of explicit spatial filtering combined with backscatter forcing is presented. The forcing uses a discrete dynamical system (DDS) called the compressible ``poor man\u27s\u27\u27 Navier--Stokes (CPMNS) equations. This DDS is derived from the governing equations and is shown to exhibit good spectral and dynamical properties for use in a turbulence model. An overview and critique of existing turbulence theory and turbulence models is given. A comprehensive theoretical case is presented arguing that traditional LES equations contain unresolved scales in terms generally thought to be resolved, and that this can only be solved with explicit filtering. The CPMNS equations are then incorporated into a simple forcing in the OVERFLOW compressible flow code, and tests are done on homogeneous, isotropic, decaying turbulence, a Mach 3 compression ramp, and a Mach 0.8 open cavity. The numerical results validate the general filter-forcing approach, although they also reveal inadequacies in OVERFLOW and that the current approach is likely too simple to be universally applicable. Two new proposals for constructing better forcing models are presented at the end of the work

    Coupling of time integration schemes for compressible unsteady flows

    This work deals with the design of a hybrid time integrator that couples spatially explicit and implicit time integrators. In order to cope with the industrial solver of Ariane Group called FLUSEPA, the explicit scheme of Heun and the implicit scheme of Crank-Nicolson are hybridized using the transition parameter : the whole technique is called AION time integration. The latter is studied into details with special focus on spectral behaviour and on its ability to keep the accuracy. It is shown that the hybrid technique has interesting dissipation and dispersion properties while maintaining precision and avoiding spurious waves. Moreover, this hybrid approach is validated on several academic test cases for both convective and diffusive fluxes. And as expected the method is more interesting in term of computational time than standard time integrators. For the extension of this hybrid approach to the temporal adaptive method implemented in FLUSEPA, it was necessary to improve some treatments in order to maintain conservation and acceptable spectral properties. Finally the hybrid time integration was also applied to a RANS/LES turbulent test case with interesting computational time while capturing the flow physics

    Towards Efficient and Scalable Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for Unsteady Flows

    openNegli ultimi anni, la crescente disponibilit`a di risorse computazionali ha contribuito alla diffusione della fluidodinamica computazionale per la ricerca e per la progettazione industriale. Uno degli approcci pi promettenti si basa sul metodo agli elementi finiti discontinui di Galerkin (dG). Nell’ambito di queste metodologie, il contributo della tesi e' triplice. Innanzi- tutto, il lavoro introduce un algoritmo di parallelizzazione ibrida MPI/OpenMP per l’utilizzo efficiente di risorse di super calcolo. In secondo luogo, propone strategie di soluzione efficienti, scalabili e con limitata allocazione di memoria per la soluzione di problemi complessi. Infine, confronta le strategie di soluzione introdotte con nuove tecniche di discretizzazione dette “ibridizzabili”, su problemi riguardanti la soluzione delle equazioni di Navier–Stokes non stazionarie. L’efficienza computazionale e' stata valutata su casi di crescente complessita' riguardanti la simulazione della turbolenza. In primo luogo, e' stata considerata la convezione naturale di Rayleigh-Benard e il flusso turbolento in un canale a numeri di Reynolds moderatamente alti. Le strategie di soluzione proposte sono risultate fino a cinque volte piu` veloci rispetto ai metodi standard allocando solamente il 7% della memoria. In secondo luogo, e' stato analizzato il flusso attorno ad una piastra piana con bordo arrotondato sottoposta a diversi livelli di turbolenza in ingresso. Nonostante la maggiore complessità' dovuta all’uso di elementi curvi ed anisotropi, l’algoritmo proposto e' risultato oltre tre volte piu` veloce allocando il 15% della memoria rispetto ad un metodo standard. Concludendo, viene riportata la simulazione del “Boeing Rudimentary Landing Gear” a Re = 10^6. In tutti i casi i risultati ottenuti sono in ottimo accordo con i dati sperimentali e con precedenti simulazioni numeriche pubblicate in letteratura.In recent years the increasing availability of High Performance Computing (HPC) resources strongly promoted the widespread of high fidelity simulations, such as the Large Eddy Simulation (LES), for industrial research and design. One of the most promising approaches to those kind of simulations is based on the discontinuous Galerkin (dG) discretization method. The contribution of the thesis towards this research area is three-fold. First, the work introduces an efficient hybrid MPI/OpenMP parallelisation paradigm to fruitfully exploit large HPC facilities. Second, it reports efficient, scalable and memory saving solution strategies for stiff dG discretisations. Third, it compares those solution strategies, for the first time using the same numerical framework, to hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods, including a novel implementation of a p-multigrid preconditioning approach, on unsteady flow problems involving the solution of the NavierStokes equations. The improvements in computational efficiency have been evaluated on cases of growing complexity involving large eddy simulations of turbulent flows. First, the Rayleigh-Benard convection problem and the turbulent channel flow at moderately high Reynolds numbers is presented. The solution strategies proposed resulted up to five times faster than standard matrix-based methods while al- locating the 7% of the memory. A second family of test cases involve the LES simulation of a rounded leading edge flat plate under different levels of free-stream turbulence. Although the increased stiffness of the iteration matrix due to the use of curved and stretched elements, the solver resulted more than three times faster while allocating the 15% of the memory if compared to standard methods. Finally, the large eddy simulation of the Boeing Rudimentary Landing Gear at Re = 10^6 is reported.
