In an increasingly competitive environment subject to uncontrollable risks, the continuity of organizations can be severely threatened, and the decision-making process takes place under circumstances of great uncertainty. Therefore, it is necessary to develop strategies and competencies that allow the business to thrive. Startups, particularly technology-based ones, are an essential source of innovation. However, several studies indicate that approximately 60% of Startups fail in the first five years of business. To succeed, startups need to develop skills that allow them to rapidly evaluate their decisions and options, and to identify what is vital for the survival of their business. Thus, organizational resilience becomes of paramount importance to those companies. The term resilience is used in different areas of knowledge, but all the definitions share common ground regarding the concept: it describes the ability of an element to return to its normal state after a period of stress and crisis. The main objective of this exploratory research developed in Portugal is to identify the resilience factors of technological Startups. It is also intended to contribute to the design and development of instruments which promote organizational resilience in technological ecosystems. The current research follows the case study methodology based on a sample of 10 technological startups collected from the Startup Leiria ecosystem (Portugal). The Startup Leiria is an incubator of startup ventures which makes it a prime source of data and knowledge. The main findings point out the necessity to develop agility skills in Startup ecosystems. It was concluded that resilient organizations are characterized by having the ability to anticipate, respond, adapt, and recover from a disruptive event. The uniqueness of this study concerns its contribution to stimulate data-driven discussions regarding the necessity to implement programs for the reskilling of Startups in the context of their ecosystems.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Purpose: This research explores the impact of disaster resilience, social resilience, organizational resilience, and business resilience on the growth of multinational corporations (MNCs) in Australia. The research aims to investigate the influence of these resilience variables on MNC growth in Australia. Theoretical framework:  The theoretical framework is developed based on the concepts of disaster resilience, social resilience, business resilience, organizational resilience, and MNC growth. Design/methodology/approach: A questionnaire was used as the research instrument to collect data, and the Structural Equation Model (SEM) was employed to determine the relationship between resilience variables and MNC growth in Australia.   Findings: The findings indicate that disaster resilience, social resilience, organizational resilience, and business resilience significantly influence the growth of MNCs in Australia. However, the impact of the epidemic was found to be the primary influencing factor, while disaster resilience and organizational resilience did not have a direct influence on MNC growth in Australia. Research, Practical & Social implications: The study highlights the originality and value of MNCs contributing to resilience variables by implementing risk reduction measures, supporting community preparedness and response, and investing in sustainable and resilient infrastructure. Originality/value: These findings provide insights for MNCs operating in Australia to enhance their resilience strategies and facilitate sustainable growth in the face of various challenges

JUGGLING THE PARADOXES – GOVERNANCE MECHANISMS IN BIMODAL IT ORGANIZATIONS

The fundamental changes associated with digitalization demand businesses and public enterprises to balance exploitative and explorative capabilities in their internal IT function. One approach to balance these paradoxical demands is the adoption of twofold organizational structures often referred to as bimodal IT. While the IS literature has made recent advances in the description and analysis of bimodal organization structures, we still lack a deeper understanding of the inner workings within bimodal IT organizations and the potential tensions between traditional and agile IT. To address this research gap, we adopt IT governance mechanisms as an analytical framework to study two bimodal IT organization cases, one at a law enforcement agency and the other at an automotive company. We analyze data collected through fourteen semi-structured interviews using grounded theory techniques. We first identify challenges associated with the implementation of and the coordination within organization’s bimodal IT organizations. We then identify the structural, procedural, and relational governance mechanisms used within these organizations and elucidate how they relate to the categories of challenges. Finally, we identify and describe five novel governance paradoxes of bimodal IT organizations that emerged as core concepts from this research. Theoretical contributions and practical implications are discussed

In an increasingly competitive environment and subject to uncontrollable risks, the continuity of organizations can be undermined and decision making takes place under circumstances of great uncertainty; Therefore, it is necessary to develop strategies and competencies that allow for the maintenance of the business.
