Will You Look Me in the Eye? The Embrace and Denial of Human Dignity on Marquette Campus

With a foundation in Levinas\u27 pseudo-ethical philosophy of the Phenomena of the Face, this project provided a definition of human dignity and considered whether or not the Marquette University community practices a common respect for human dignity in everyday interactions on the streets of Marquette campus -- focusing in on Wisconsin Avenue due to its constant traffic of both Marquette University students and faculty and Milwaukee community members. This project observed typical day to day interactions that occur while walking around Marquette University\u27s campus with a specific emphasis on how people affiliated with Marquette University react to other Marquette community members as well as members of the Milwaukee community on campus. Ultimately, the research sought to consider the level of awareness Marquette affiliates have upon the subject of human dignity and calls for we as a university to raise awareness about the necessity and nuances of human dignity in everyday interactions.https://epublications.marquette.edu/english_3210ur/1019/thumbnail.jp

Rapa Nui (Easter Island)’s Stone Worlds

This article explores the spatial, architectural and conceptual relationships between landscape places, stone quarrying, and stone moving and building during Rapa Nui’s statue-building period. These are central themes of the ‘Rapa Nui Landscapes of Construction Project’ and are discussed using aspects of the findings of our recent fieldwork. The different scales of expression, from the detail of the domestic sphere to the monumental working of quarries, are considered. It is suggested that the impressiveness of Rapa Nui’s stone architecture is its conceptual coherence at the small scale as much as at the large scale

Sociological and Human Developmental Explanations of Crime: Conflict or Consensus

This paper examines multidisciplinary correlates of delinquency in an attempt to integrate sociological and environmental theories of crime with human developmental and biological explanations of crime. Structural equation models are applied to assess links among biological, psychological, and environmental variables collected prospectively from birth through age 17 on a sample of 800 black children at high risk for learning and behavioral disorders. Results show that for both males and females, aggression and disciplinary problems in school during adolescence are the strongest predictors of repeat offense behavior. Whereas school achievement and family income and stability are also significant predictors of delinquency for males, early physical development is the next strongest predictor for females. Results indicate that some effects on delinquency also vary during different ages. It is suggested that behavioral and learning disorders have both sociological and developmental correlates and that adequate educational resources are necessary to ensure channels of legitimate opportunities for high-risk youths

Causes of accidents on construction sites: the case of a large construction contractor in Great Britain

In the construction industry in Great Britain, it is estimated that workplace accidents and work-related ill-health cost society £3 billion – this is equivalent to 4% of the construction industry revenue of about £75 billion. Thus, the need to study, understand and effectively manage health and safety (H&S) on construction sites cannot be overemphasised. This paper presents an analysis of accident data recorded by a large construction contractor in Great Britain. The data cover a period of 36 months from April 2004 to March 2007. Pareto analysis was used to determine the relative importance of the causes of accidents on the basis of number of workdays lost. Differences between the four sectors (highways, infrastructure, rail and utilities) in which the company operates were investigated. The case study suggests that the main causes of accidents on construction sites relate to individual attitudes towards H&S. Ability and willingness to implement safe approaches to working and an awareness of their own and others’ H&S can contribute to safe performances. It is suggested that the company could increase awareness of H&S issues among the workforce. This should be done on a regular basis through effective training, briefing and debriefing

Mind-Body-Technology: ‘Nosce te Ipsum’ and a theory of prosthetic ‘trialism’

This chapter will discuss a profound and fundamental interrelationship between mind, body and technology in terms of what it means to be ‘human’, or, what ‘being’ human might mean. One historical, yet enduring, theory of the human subject is René Descartes’s philosophy of the mind distinct from the body – this is termed ‘Cartesian dualism’. Whilst this is a classical, if outmoded, model of conceiving of a philosophy of the subject, it also provides a useful conceptual framework through which to critique, and arrive at, a different concept of how the terms ‘mind’ and ‘body’ might operate. For example, the mind/body binary distinction can be interrogated and deconstructed to accommodate the role of technology as having an ontologically embedded position within the very definition of ‘humanity’. Indeed, ‘anthropogenesis’ – the very becoming of humanity – might instead incorporate the role of technological prosthesis to any mind/body dualism in defining the ‘human subject’. We will propose that this ‘dualism’ should be reconsidered for a fundamentally entangled mind-body-technology ‘trialism’ in the emergence of a distinct human being. However, at the same time, this interconnected relationship is also the object of power and control
