The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus : Großbritannien 1996

"You've heard of Oxford Circus, you've heard of Piccadilly Circus, and this is the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus" - als Rolling-Stones-Frontmann Mick Jagger diesen Satz am 11. 15 Stunden später denkt Jagger über all dies anders. Aber der Reihe nach

Absence and Presence: Top of the Pops and the demand for music videos in the 1960s

The file attached to this record is the author's final peer reviewed version.Whilst there is a surprising critical consensus underpinning the myth that British music video began in the mid-1970s with Queen’s video for ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, few scholars have pursued Mundy’s (1999) lead in locating its origins a decade earlier. Although the relationship between film and the popular song has a much longer history, this article seeks to establish that the international success of British beat groups in the first half of the 1960s encouraged television broadcasters to target the youth audience with new shows that presented their idols performing their latest hits (which normally meant miming to recorded playback). In the UK, from 1964, the BBC’s Top of the Pops created an enduring format specifically harnessed to popular music chart rankings. The argument follows that this format created a demand for the top British artists’ regular studio presence which their busy touring schedules could seldom accommodate; American artists achieving British pop chart success rarely appeared on the show in person. This frequent absence then, coupled with the desire by broadcasters elsewhere in Europe and America to present popular British acts, created a demand for pre-recorded or filmed inserts to be produced and shown in lieu of artists’ appearance. Drawing on records held at the BBC’s Written Archives and elsewhere, and interviews with a number of 1960s music video directors, this article evidences TV’s demand-driver and illustrates how the ‘pop promo’, in the hands of some, became a creative enterprise which exceeded television’s requirement to cover for an artist’s studio absence

Shockwaves and the Rolling Stones: An Overview of Pediatric Stone Disease

    Get PDF
Urinary stone disease is a common problem in adults, with an estimated 10% to 20% lifetime risk of developing a stone and an annual incidence of almost 1%. In contrast, in children, even though the incidence appears to be increasing, urinary tract stones are a rare problem, with an estimated incidence of approximately 5 to 36 per 100,000 children. Consequently, typical complications of rare diseases, such as delayed diagnosis, lack of awareness, and specialist knowledge, as well as difficulties accessing specific treatments also affect children with stone disease. Indeed, because stone disease is such a common problem in adults, frequently, it is adult practitioners who will first be asked to manage affected children. Yet, there are unique aspects to pediatric urolithiasis such that treatment practices common in adults cannot necessarily be transferred to children. Here, we review the epidemiology, etiology, presentation, investigation, and management of pediatric stone disease; we highlight those aspects that separate its management from that in adults and make a case for a specialized, multidisciplinary approach to pediatric stone disease

From The Rolling Stones to Elton John: The Music of History

There are no less than three types of historical thought: Traditional, mainstream, and constructional. For traditional historians, history is the practice of reconstructing the past to build a fuller historical narrative. Mainstream history is the common knowledge that the average person carries. Constructional history is a philosophical view that the past is not a single narrative, but several interconnected ones. A central problematic with such constructs of history is that it places limits on understandings of the past, by compartmentalizing and ordering events, thereby introducing biases that interrupt. One possible way to deconstruct such limitations is decentering narratives of history by making interdisciplinary connections. I argue that viewing traditional history through musical expression offers a way to gain a historical understanding with fewer limits. Unlike other disciplines, the making and appreciation of music is not limited to any one socio-economic or cultural group. Anyone, from slave to president seeks expression through sound and lyric, making the music coming from a particular period a commentary on the events of it. Lyrics, for one, can serve as a unique perspective of the past from the view of the previously unheard. Furthermore, traditional and mainstream history has a music of its own by its tempo, cadence, and vibrato. My project studies one particular period in history\u27s music (1962-1972) in which socio-political turmoil coincides with the birth of rock and roll. It is from here that I suggest a view of the music of history so as to re-assess an academic history without limits
