This paper presents the life story of a single small-business owner of immigrant background who wants his companyto grow. His business strategies are analysed both as a part of his own biographical work, and as they wereinfluenced and framed by broader political, economic and social processes. It is shown how his own personalqualities in combination with opportunity structures in the local market provided favourable conditions for hisbreak-in. Breaking out, however, seems to be presented with different types of barriers, such as lack of access tocapital, discrimination, and the fact that new markets may consist of different sorts of network that are in its turnmore difficult for new actors to enter. But even if newcomers often find these barriers difficult for to overcome,individuals are not just passive objects but also have the opportunity to realize their lives according to their own lifeplans

The Relationship between the Prices of Shipping Market and China’s Economy

To explore the relationship between the prices of shipping market and China\u27s economy, this paper analyzes the data of BDI and China\u27s GDP from 2000 to 2015. By stabilizing the BDI and GDP data, this paper identifies the one-way causal relationship between the BDI and China\u27s GDP via the granger causality test. The conclusion shows that BDI effects China\u27s GDP positively at rate of 22% by using impulse response function and variance decomposition method. Accordingly, this paper establishes VAR forecasting model of China\u27s GDP, which has a good forecasting ability

Transplanting Antitrust in China: Economic Transition, Market Structure, and State Control

This Article examines the compatibility of Western antitrust models as incorporated in China\u27s first comprehensive antitrust law – the Antimonopoly Law ( AML ) – with China\u27s local conditions. It identifies three forces that shape competition law and policy in China: China\u27s current transitional stage, China\u27s market structures, and pervasive state control in China\u27s economy. This Article discusses how these forces have limited the applicability of Western antitrust models to China in three major areas of antitrust: cartels, abuse of dominant market position, and merger review. Specifically, it details how these forces have prevented China from pursuing a rigorous anti-cartel policy, how they have led to a mismatch between monopoly abuses that are prohibited under the AML and monopoly abuses that are most prevalent in China\u27s economy, and how they have prevented the merger review process under the AML from being meaningfully applied to domestic firms. This Article demonstrates that despite having a Western-style antitrust law, China has not developed and likely will not develop a Western-style antitrust jurisprudence in the near future due to these local conditions. Finally, the Article explains how China developed a consensus on the need for a formal antitrust law despite local conditions that were not entirely compatible with such a law
