Increasing security of supply by the use of a local power controller during large system disturbances
This paper describes intelligent ways in which distributed generation and local loads can be controlled during large system disturbances, using Local Power Controllers. When distributed generation is available, and a system disturbance is detected early enough, the generation can be dispatched, and its output power can be matched as closely as possible to local microgrid demand levels. Priority-based load shedding can be implemented to aid this process. In this state, the local microgrid supports the wider network by relieving the wider network of the micro-grid load. Should grid performance degrade further, the local microgrid can separate itself from the network and maintain power to the most important local loads, re-synchronising to the grid only after more normal performance is regained. Such an intelligent system would be a suitable for hospitals, data centres, or any other industrial facility where there are critical loads. The paper demonstrates the actions of such Local Power Controllers using laboratory experiments at the 10kVA scale
Ubiquitous energy storage
This paper presents a vision of a future power system with "ubiquitous energy storage", where storage would be utilized at all levels of the electricity system. The growing requirement for storage is reviewed, driven by the expansion of distributed generation. The capabilities and existing applications of various storage technologies are presented, providing a useful review of the state of the art. Energy storage will have to be integrated with the power system and there are various ways in which this may be achieved. Some of these options are discussed, as are commercial and regulatory issues. In two case studies, the costs and benefits of some storage options are assessed. It is concluded that electrical storage is not cost effective but that thermal storage offers attractive opportunities
Applying Prolog to Develop Distributed Systems
Development of distributed systems is a difficult task. Declarative
programming techniques hold a promising potential for effectively supporting
programmer in this challenge. While Datalog-based languages have been actively
explored for programming distributed systems, Prolog received relatively little
attention in this application area so far. In this paper we present a
Prolog-based programming system, called DAHL, for the declarative development
of distributed systems. DAHL extends Prolog with an event-driven control
mechanism and built-in networking procedures. Our experimental evaluation using
a distributed hash-table data structure, a protocol for achieving Byzantine
fault tolerance, and a distributed software model checker - all implemented in
DAHL - indicates the viability of the approach
Safe and Verifiable Design of Concurrent Java Programs
The design of concurrent programs has a reputation for being difficult, and thus potentially dangerous in safetycritical real-time and embedded systems. The recent appearance of Java, whilst cleaning up many insecure aspects of OO programming endemic in C++, suffers from a deceptively simple threads model that is an insecure variant of ideas that are over 25 years old [1]. Consequently, we cannot directly exploit a range of new CASE tools -- based upon modern developments in parallel computing theory -- that can verify and check the design of concurrent systems for a variety of dangers\ud
such as deadlock and livelock that otherwise plague us during testing and maintenance and, more seriously, cause catastrophic failure in service. \ud

libraries based on Hoare's Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP); the use of CSP greatly simplifies the design of concurrent systems and, in many cases, a parallel approach often significantly simplifies systems originally approached sequentially. New CSP CASE tools permit designs to be verified against formal specifications\ud
and checked for deadlock and livelock. Below we introduce CSP and its implementation in Java and develop a small concurrent application. The formal CSP description of the application is provided, as well as that of an equivalent sequential version. FDR is used to verify the correctness of both implementations, their\ud

Clockwise: a mixed-media file system
This paper presents Clockwise, a mixed-media file system. The primary goal of Clockwise is to provide a storage architecture that supports the storage and retrieval of best-effort and real-time file system data. Clockwise provides an abstraction called a dynamic partition that groups lists of related (large) blocks on one or more disks. Dynamic partitions can grow and shrink in size and reading or writing of dynamic partitions can be scheduled explicitly. A Generic Storage API
We present a generic API suitable for provision of highly generic storage
facilities that can be tailored to produce various individually customised
storage infrastructures. The paper identifies a candidate set of minimal
storage system building blocks, which are sufficiently simple to avoid
encapsulating policy where it cannot be customised by applications, and
composable to build highly flexible storage architectures. Four main generic
components are defined: the store, the namer, the caster and the interpreter.
It is hypothesised that these are sufficiently general that they could act as
building blocks for any information storage and retrieval system. The essential
characteristics of each are defined by an interface, which may be implemented

Architecture of a network-in-the-Loop environment for characterizing AC power system behavior
This paper describes the method by which a large hardware-in-the-loop environment has been realized for three-phase ac power systems. The environment allows an entire laboratory power-network topology (generators, loads, controls, protection devices, and switches) to be placed in the loop of a large power-network simulation. The system is realized by using a realtime power-network simulator, which interacts with the hardware via the indirect control of a large synchronous generator and by measuring currents flowing from its terminals. These measured currents are injected into the simulation via current sources to close the loop. This paper describes the system architecture and, most importantly, the calibration methodologies which have been developed to overcome measurement and loop latencies. In particular, a new "phase advance" calibration removes the requirement to add unwanted components into the simulated network to compensate for loop delay. The results of early commissioning experiments are demonstrated. The present system performance limits under transient conditions (approximately 0.25 Hz/s and 30 V/s to contain peak phase-and voltage-tracking errors within 5. and 1%) are defined mainly by the controllability of the synchronous generator
