    Quantization and Compressive Sensing

    Quantization is an essential step in digitizing signals, and, therefore, an indispensable component of any modern acquisition system. This book chapter explores the interaction of quantization and compressive sensing and examines practical quantization strategies for compressive acquisition systems. Specifically, we first provide a brief overview of quantization and examine fundamental performance bounds applicable to any quantization approach. Next, we consider several forms of scalar quantizers, namely uniform, non-uniform, and 1-bit. We provide performance bounds and fundamental analysis, as well as practical quantizer designs and reconstruction algorithms that account for quantization. Furthermore, we provide an overview of Sigma-Delta (ΣΔ\Sigma\Delta) quantization in the compressed sensing context, and also discuss implementation issues, recovery algorithms and performance bounds.     Die Arbeit präsentiert ein Multimedia-Framework für Linux, das im Unterschied zu früheren Arbeiten auf den Ideen "retained-mode processing" und "lazy evaluation" basiert: Statt Transformationen unmittelbar auszuführen, wird eine abstrakte Repräsentation aller Medienelemente aufgebaut. "renderer"-Treiber fungieren als Übersetzer, die diese Darstellung zur Laufzeit in konkrete Operationen umsetzen, wobei das Datenmodell zahlreiche Optimierungen zur Reduktion der Anzahl der Schritte oder der Minimierung von Kommunikation erlaubt. Dies erlaubt ein stark vereinfachtes Programmiermodell bei gleichzeitiger Effizienzsteigerung. "renderer"-Treiber können zur Ausführung von Transformationen den lokalen Prozessor verwenden, oder können die Operationen delegieren. In der Arbeit wird eine Erweiterung des X Window Systems um Mechanismen zur Medienverarbeitung vorgestellt, sowie ein "renderer"-Treiber, der diese zur Delegation der Verarbeitung nutzt

    Designing structured tight frames via an alternating projection method

    Tight frames, also known as general Welch-bound- equality sequences, generalize orthonormal systems. Numerous applications - including communications, coding, and sparse approximation- require finite-dimensional tight frames that possess additional structural properties. This paper proposes an alternating projection method that is versatile enough to solve a huge class of inverse eigenvalue problems (IEPs), which includes the frame design problem. To apply this method, one needs only to solve a matrix nearness problem that arises naturally from the design specifications. Therefore, it is the fast and easy to develop versions of the algorithm that target new design problems. Alternating projection will often succeed even if algebraic constructions are unavailable. To demonstrate that alternating projection is an effective tool for frame design, the paper studies some important structural properties in detail. First, it addresses the most basic design problem: constructing tight frames with prescribed vector norms. Then, it discusses equiangular tight frames, which are natural dictionaries for sparse approximation. Finally, it examines tight frames whose individual vectors have low peak-to-average-power ratio (PAR), which is a valuable property for code-division multiple-access (CDMA) applications. Numerical experiments show that the proposed algorithm succeeds in each of these three cases. The appendices investigate the convergence properties of the algorithm

    Generalizations of permutation source codes

In this thesis, we provide two extensions that preserve the computational simplicity but yield improved operational rate-distortion performance. In the first approach, the new class of vector quantizers has a codebook comprising several permutation codes as subcodes. Methods for designing good code parameters are given. One method depends on optimizing the rate allocation in a shape-gain vector quantizer with gain-dependent wrapped spherical shape codebook. In the second approach, we introduce frame permutation quantization (FPQ), a new vector quantization technique using finite frames. In FPQ, a vector is encoded using a permutation source code to quantize its frame expansion. This means that the encoding is a partial ordering of the frame expansion coefficients. Compared to ordinary permutation source coding, FPQ produces a greater number of possible quantization rates and a higher maximum rate. Various representations for the partitions induced by FPQ are presented and reconstruction algorithms based on linear programming and quadratic programming are derived. Reconstruction using the canonical dual frame is also studied, and several results relate properties of the analysis frame to whether linear reconstruction techniques provide consistent reconstructions. Simulations for uniform and Gaussian sources show performance improvements over entropy-constrained scalar quantization for certain combinations of vector dimension and coding rate.by Ha Quy Nguyen.S.M
