Blind Carrier Phase Recovery for General 2{\pi}/M-rotationally Symmetric Constellations

This paper introduces a novel blind carrier phase recovery estimator for general 2{\Pi}/M-rotationally symmetric constellations. This estimation method is a generalization of the non-data-aided (NDA) nonlinear Phase Metric Method (PMM) estimator already designed for general quadrature amplitude constellations. This unbiased estimator is seen here as a fourth order PMM then generalized to Mth order (Mth PMM) in such manner that it covers general 2{\Pi}/M-rotationally symmetric constellations such as PAM, QAM, PSK. Simulation results demonstrate the good performance of this Mth PMM estimation algorithm against competitive blind phase estimators already published for various modulation systems of practical interest.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, International Journal of Wireless & Mobile Networks (IJWMN

Visualization on colour based flow vector of thermal image for movement detection during interactive session

Recently thermal imaging is exploited in applications such as motion and face detection. It has drawn attention many researchers to build such technology to improve lifestyle. This work proposed a technique to detect and identify a motion in sequence images for the application in security monitoring system or outdoor surveillance. Conventional system might cause false information with the present of shadow. Thus, methods employed in this work are Canny edge detector method, Lucas Kanade and Horn Shunck algorithms, to overcome the major problem when using thresholding method, which is only intensity or pixel magnitude is considered instead of relationships between the pixels. The results obtained could be observed in flow vector parameter and the segmentation colour based image for the time frame from 1 to 10 seconds. The visualization of both the parameters clarified the movement and changes of pixel intensity between two frames by the supportive colour segmentation, either in smooth or rough motion. Thus, this technique may contribute to others application such as biometrics, military system, and surveillance machine

On a Hybrid Preamble/Soft-Output Demapper Approach for Time Synchronization for IEEE 802.15.6 Narrowband WBAN

In this paper, we present a maximum likelihood (ML) based time synchronization algorithm for Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN). The proposed technique takes advantage of soft information retrieved from the soft demapper for the time delay estimation. This algorithm has a low complexity and is adapted to the frame structure specified by the IEEE 802.15.6 standard for the narrowband systems. Simulation results have shown good performance which approach the theoretical mean square error limit bound represented by the Cramer Rao Bound (CRB)

Near Optimum Low Complexity Smoothing Loops for Dynamical Phase Estimation—Application to BPSK Modulated Signals

International audience—This correspondence provides and analyzes a low complexity, near optimum, fixed-interval smoothing algorithm that approaches the performance of an optimal smoother for the price of two low complexity sequential estimators, i.e., two phase-locked loops (PLLs). Based on a linear approximation of the problem, a theoretical performance evaluation is given. The theoretical results are compared to some simulation results and to the Bayesian and hybrid Cramér–Rao bounds. They illustrate the good performance of the proposed smoothing PLL (S-PLL) algorithm. Bayesian and Hybrid Cramér–Rao Bounds for the Carrier Recovery Under Dynamic Phase Uncertain Channels

International audience—In this paper, we study Bayesian and hybrid Cramér–Rao bounds (BCRB and HCRB) for the code-aided (CA), the data-aided (DA), and the non-data-aided (NDA) dynamical phase estimation of QAM modulated signals. We address the bounds derivation for both the offline scenario, for which the whole observation frame is used, and the online which only takes into account the current and the previous observations. For the CA scenario we show that the computation of the Bayesian information matrix (BIM) and of the hybrid information matrix (HIM) is NP hard. We then resort to the belief-propagation (BP) algorithm or to the Bahl–Cocke–Jelinek–Raviv (BCJR) algorithm to obtain some approximate values. Moreover, in order to avoid the calculus of the inverse of the BIM and of the HIM, we present some closed form expressions for the various CRBs, which greatly reduces the computation complexity. Finally, some simulations allow us to compare the possible improvements enabled by the offline and the CA scenarios. International audience— * In this paper, we propose a maximum likelihood based Code-Aided (CA) timing recovery algorithm for square-QAM modulated signals. We also theoretically derive the analytical expression of the CA Cramer-Rao Bound for time delay estimation. Our simulations show that the proposed CA approach realizes a performance equivalent to the Data-Aided (DA) approach over a large interval of signal to noise ratio (SNR) values
