    Assessing the effects of work zone configurations on drivers\u27 visual attention

    This study assessed the effects of two different work zone configurations on driver’s visual attention by eye movement monitoring. A driving simulator study was conducted with thirty participants. Variations in traffic density and warning sign placement distance were added to the merge configurations to simulate the real time situation. A 2 x 2 x 3 within-subjects factorial design was used for this research. The independent variables used in this study were (1) merge configuration [(i) Conventional Lane Merge (CLM) and (ii) Joint Lane Merge (JLM)], (2) traffic density [(i) high and (ii) low] and (3) distance between traffic signs [(i) standard distance, (ii) 25% reduction from standard and (iii) 25% increase from standard]. The dependent variable used for this study was the total number of eye movements (gaze) of the participants towards the three mirrors (rear view, left side view and right side view), and towards ‘other areas’ such as dash board, warning signs, environment, and other vehicles etc., were analyzed. Results from the research show that, the total number of gazes at mirrors and ‘other areas’ in CLM and JLM are nearly the same and they are not significantly different (p value: \u3e0.05). Changes in traffic density and sign placement distances have a significant effect on number of gazes at mirrors and ‘other areas’ (p value: \u3c0.05). Gender and driving experience have a significant effect on number of gazes at mirrors, but not at ‘other areas’. Reducing the sign placement distances by 25% from the standard distances does not show any significant effect on the number of gazes at mirrors, however it shows an increase in the number of gazes at ‘other areas’ by nearly 11.6%. An increase in sign placement distances by 25% from the standard distances, show an increase in number of gazes at mirrors by nearly 16.9%, while it does not show any significant effect on the number of gazes at the ‘other areas’

    An apparatus for aligning and calibrating scene displays in an aircraft simulator has a base on which all of the instruments for the aligning and calibrating are mounted. Laser directs beam at double right prism which is attached to pivoting support on base. The pivot point of the prism is located at the design eye point (DEP) of simulator during the aligning and calibrating. The objective lens in the base is movable on a track to follow the laser beam at different angles within the field of vision at the DEP. An eyepiece and a precision diopter are movable into a position behind the prism during the scene evaluation. A photometer or illuminometer is pivotable about the pivot into and out of position behind the eyepiece

    Use of Carbon Arc Lamps as Solar Simulation in Environmental Testing

    This report covers work done by the authors on the solar simulator for the six-foot diameter space simulator presently in use at JPL. The space simulator was made by modifying an existent vacuum chamber and uses carbon arc lamps for solar simulation. All Ranger vehicles flown to date have been tested in this facility. The report also contains a series of appendixes covering various aspects of space-simulation design and use. Some of these appendixes contain detailed analyses of space-simulator design criteria. Others cover the techniques used in studying carbon-arc lamps and in applying them as solar simulation

    Meta SOS - A Maude Based SOS Meta-Theory Framework

    Meta SOS is a software framework designed to integrate the results from the meta-theory of structural operational semantics (SOS). These results include deriving semantic properties of language constructs just by syntactically analyzing their rule-based definition, as well as automatically deriving sound and ground-complete axiomatizations for languages, when considering a notion of behavioural equivalence.     Laser Doppler velocity simulator

    A method and apparatus for inducing a Doppler frequency shift in a reference beam laser velocimeter light beam to simulate target velocity are described. The light beam is passed through a rotating refractive transparent block positioned between two reference points along the beam which results in a continuous change in the light beam optical path length between the reference points according to a known function. The velocity indicated by the laser velocimeter is compared to the known simulated velocity function for velocimeter testing and calibration

    Lightweight Carbon Fiber Mirrors for Solar Concentrator Applications

    Lightweight parabolic mirrors for solar concentrators have been fabricated using carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and a nanometer scale optical surface smoothing technique. The smoothing technique improved the surface roughness of the CFRP surface from ~3 {\mu}m root mean square (RMS) for as-cast to ~5 nm RMS after smoothing. The surfaces were then coated with metal, which retained the sub-wavelength surface roughness, to produce a high-quality specular reflector. The mirrors were tested in an 11x geometrical concentrator configuration and achieved an optical efficiency of 78% under an AM0 solar simulator. With further development, lightweight CFRP mirrors will enable dramatic improvements in the specific power, power per unit mass, achievable for concentrated photovoltaics in space.Comment: IEEE Photovoltaic Specialist Conference (PVSC), DC, USA, 201
