Constructing IGA-suitable planar parameterization from complex CAD boundary by domain partition and global/local optimization
In this paper, we propose a general framework for constructing IGA-suitable
planar B-spline parameterizations from given complex CAD boundaries consisting
of a set of B-spline curves. Instead of forming the computational domain by a
simple boundary, planar domains with high genus and more complex boundary
curves are considered. Firstly, some pre-processing operations including
B\'ezier extraction and subdivision are performed on each boundary curve in
order to generate a high-quality planar parameterization; then a robust planar
domain partition framework is proposed to construct high-quality patch-meshing
results with few singularities from the discrete boundary formed by connecting
the end points of the resulting boundary segments. After the topology
information generation of quadrilateral decomposition, the optimal placement of
interior B\'ezier curves corresponding to the interior edges of the
quadrangulation is constructed by a global optimization method to achieve a
patch-partition with high quality. Finally, after the imposition of
C1=G1-continuity constraints on the interface of neighboring B\'ezier patches
with respect to each quad in the quadrangulation, the high-quality B\'ezier
patch parameterization is obtained by a C1-constrained local optimization
method to achieve uniform and orthogonal iso-parametric structures while
keeping the continuity conditions between patches. The efficiency and
robustness of the proposed method are demonstrated by several examples which
are compared to results obtained by the skeleton-based parameterization
approach

Efficient Discovery of Ontology Functional Dependencies
Poor data quality has become a pervasive issue due to the increasing
complexity and size of modern datasets. Constraint based data cleaning
techniques rely on integrity constraints as a benchmark to identify and correct
errors. Data values that do not satisfy the given set of constraints are
flagged as dirty, and data updates are made to re-align the data and the
constraints. However, many errors often require user input to resolve due to
domain expertise defining specific terminology and relationships. For example,
in pharmaceuticals, 'Advil' \emph{is-a} brand name for 'ibuprofen' that can be
captured in a pharmaceutical ontology. While functional dependencies (FDs) have
traditionally been used in existing data cleaning solutions to model syntactic
equivalence, they are not able to model broader relationships (e.g., is-a)
defined by an ontology. In this paper, we take a first step towards extending
the set of data quality constraints used in data cleaning by defining and
discovering \emph{Ontology Functional Dependencies} (OFDs). We lay out
theoretical and practical foundations for OFDs, including a set of sound and
complete axioms, and a linear inference procedure. We then develop effective
algorithms for discovering OFDs, and a set of optimizations that efficiently
prune the search space. Our experimental evaluation using real data show the
scalability and accuracy of our algorithms.Comment: 12 page
Soil biodiversity: functions, threats and tools for policy makers
Human societies rely on the vast diversity of benefits provided by nature, such as food, fibres, construction materials, clean water, clean air and climate regulation. All the elements required for these ecosystem services depend on soil, and soil biodiversity is the driving force behind their regulation. With 2010 being the international year of biodiversity and with the growing attention in Europe on the importance of soils to remain healthy and capable of supporting human activities sustainably, now is the perfect time to raise awareness on preserving soil biodiversity. The objective of this report is to review the state of knowledge of soil biodiversity, its functions, its contribution to ecosystem services and its relevance for the sustainability of human society. The design co-ordination framework : key elements for effective product development
This paper proposes a Design Co-ordination Framework (DCF) i.e. a concept for an ideal DC system with the abilities to support co-ordination of various complex aspects of product development. A set of frames, modelling key elements of co-ordination, which reflect the states of design, plans, organisation, allocations, tasks etc. during the design process, has been identified. Each frame is explained and the co-ordination, i.e. the management of the links between these frames, is presented, based upon characteristic DC situations in industry. It is concluded that while the DCF provides a basis for our research efforts into enhancing the product development process there is still considerable work and development required before it can adequately reflect and support Design Co-ordination
