With the arrival of the post-industrial society, in Europe and elsewhere, it has become increasingly clear that people should continue learning over their entire life-spans lest they or their society suffer the dire consequences. But what does this future lifelong learning society exactly look like? And how then should education prepare for it? What should people learn and how should they do so? How can we afford to pay for all this, what are the socio-economic constraints of the move towards a lifelong-learning society? And, of course, what role can and should the educational establishment of schools and universities play? This are questions that demand serious research efforts, which is what this paper argues for

The ever-growing quantity of collaborative data sources has resulted in the requirement for efficient approaches to create, integrate and retrieve information more efficiently in an environment where the users ask for accurate information.     A Semantic Web Based Approach to Knowledge Management for Grid Applications

    Knowledge has become increasingly important to support intelligent process automation and collaborative problem solving in large-scale science over the Internet. This paper addresses distributed knowledge management, its approach and methodology, in the context of grid application. We start by analyzing the nature of grid computing and its requirements for knowledge support; then, we discuss knowledge characteristics and the challenges for knowledge management on the grid. A semantic Web-based approach is proposed to tackle the six challenges of the knowledge lifecycle - namely, those of acquiring, modeling, retrieving, reusing, publishing, and maintaining knowledge. To facilitate the application of the approach, a systematic methodology is conceived and designed to provide a general implementation guideline. We use a real-world Grid application, the GEODISE project, as a case study in which the core semantic Web technologies such as ontologies, semantic enrichment, and semantic reasoning are used for knowledge engineering and management.     A Conceptual Model of the Research Methodology Domain

    Recognising the need for the development of research capacity and changing learning paradigms that include online and collaborative approaches, an ontology of research methodology needs to be developed to allow for the shared creation of knowledge in this domain. An ontology engineering approach is followed in developing a conceptual model of the domain using UML, with a focus on studies in the computing disciplines. A research scheme that is made up of a philosophical world view, a research design, and research methods is proposed. Appropriate relations between these are identified, as well as attributes of the various concepts in the conceptual model.
