Aspect-Oriented Programming
Aspect-oriented programming is a promising idea that can improve the quality of software by reduce the problem of code tangling and improving the separation of concerns. At ECOOP'97, the first AOP workshop brought together a number of researchers interested in aspect-orientation. At ECOOP'98, during the second AOP workshop the participants reported on progress in some research topics and raised more issues that were further discussed. \ud

This year, the ideas and concepts of AOP have been spread and adopted more widely, and, accordingly, the workshop received many submissions covering areas from design and application of aspects to design and implementation of aspect languages
How we might be able to Understand the Brain
Current methodologies in the neurosciences have difficulty in accounting for complex phenomena such as language, which can however be quite well characterised in phenomenological terms. This paper addresses the issue of unifying the two approaches. We typically understand complicated systems in terms of a collection of models, each characterisable in principle within a formal system, it being possible to explain higher-level properties in terms of lower level ones by means of a series of inferences based on these models. We consider the nervous system to be a mechanism for implementing the demands of an appropriate collection of models, each concerned with some aspect of brain and behaviour, the observer mechanism of Baas playing an important role in matching model and behaviour in this context. The discussion expounds these ideas in detail, showing their potential utility in connection with real problems of brain and behaviour, important areas where the ideas can be applied including the development of higher levels of abstraction, and linguistic behaviour, as described in the works of Karmiloff-Smith and Jackendoff respectively
Ten virtues of structured graphs
This paper extends the invited talk by the first author about the virtues
of structured graphs. The motivation behind the talk and this paper relies on our
experience on the development of ADR, a formal approach for the design of styleconformant,
reconfigurable software systems. ADR is based on hierarchical graphs
with interfaces and it has been conceived in the attempt of reconciling software architectures
and process calculi by means of graphical methods. We have tried to
write an ADR agnostic paper where we raise some drawbacks of flat, unstructured
graphs for the design and analysis of software systems and we argue that hierarchical,
structured graphs can alleviate such drawbacks
A Survey on Service Composition Middleware in Pervasive Environments
The development of pervasive computing has put the light on a challenging problem: how to dynamically compose services in heterogeneous and highly changing environments? We propose a survey that defines the service composition as a sequence of four steps: the translation, the generation, the evaluation, and finally the execution. With this powerful and simple model we describe the major service composition middleware. Then, a classification of these service composition middleware according to pervasive requirements - interoperability, discoverability, adaptability, context awareness, QoS management, security, spontaneous management, and autonomous management - is given. The classification highlights what has been done and what remains to do to develop the service composition in pervasive environments

Learning from AI : new trends in database technology
Recently some researchers in the areas of database data modelling and knowledge representations in artificial intelligence have recognized that they share many common goals. In this survey paper we show the relationship between database and artificial intelligence research. We show that there has been a tendency for data models to incorporate more modelling techniques developed for knowledge representations in artificial intelligence as the desire to incorporate more application oriented semantics, user friendliness, and flexibility has increased. Increasing the semantics of the representation is the key to capturing the "reality" of the database environment, increasing user friendliness, and facilitating the support of multiple, possibly conflicting, user views of the information contained in a database
A modular modelling framework for hypotheses testing in the simulation of urbanisation
In this paper, we present a modelling experiment developed to study systems
of cities and processes of urbanisation in large territories over long time
spans. Building on geographical theories of urban evolution, we rely on
agent-based models to 1/ formalise complementary and alternative hypotheses of
urbanisation and 2/ explore their ability to simulate observed patterns in a
virtual laboratory. The paper is therefore divided into two sections : an
overview of the mechanisms implemented to represent competing hypotheses used
to simulate urban evolution; and an evaluation of the resulting model
structures in their ability to simulate - efficiently and parsimoniously - a
system of cities (the Former Soviet Union) over several periods of time (before
and after the crash of the USSR). We do so using a modular framework of
model-building and evolutionary algorithms for the calibration of several model
structures. This project aims at tackling equifinality in systems dynamics by
confronting different mechanisms with similar evaluation criteria. It enables
the identification of the best-performing models with respect to the chosen
criteria by scanning automatically the parameter along with the space of model
