The moderating effect of brand orientation on inter-firm market orientation and performance
While prior research has shown that market and brand orientation
are key contributors to successful business performance, research to
date has not fully explored how inter firm collaboration for these two
key orientations can enhance business performance. The purpose of
the paper is to investigate the relationship between inter-firm market
and performance; to test for the moderating role of brand orientation
in that relationship. A total of 169 completed pairs of surveys were
collected of small and medium enterprises operating internationally
in a variety of industries in Switzerland. The results show that inter-firm
market and brand orientation are two antecedents of marketing and
financial performance. The impact of inter-firm market on marketing
and financial performance is significant when the brand orientation
is favorable. This study extends previous research by examining the
moderating role of brand orientation on inter firm market orientation,
which is important, especially for firms wanting to increase their brand
reputation by entering into partnerships with other firms. Further
research is indicated, to identify the key moderators of the driving
force of inter-firm market in relation to business performance and
the reason why maintaining a strong brand presence is important in
the international marketplace

Small and Medium sized Enterprises’ Collaborative Buyer-Supplier Relationships: Boundary Spanning Individual Perspectives
Boundary-spanning individuals (BSIs) play a critical role in supply chain management, especially in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) where interactions with buyers and suppliers can depend heavily on just a few individuals. This study, utilizing data from Korean manufacturing-sector SMEs, explores whether cooperative social value orientations of SMEs’ BSIs influence the effects of collaborative buyer-supplier initiatives. The results suggested that the performance implication of decision-sharing initiative increases when BSIs have a high level of cooperative social value orientation. However, it also negatively moderates the relationship between risk/benefit sharing (involving financial losses or gains) and performance suggesting possible negative side-effects. Team Learning: A Theoretical Integration and Review
With the increasing emphasis on work teams as the primary architecture of organizational structure, scholars have begun to focus attention on team learning, the processes that support it, and the important outcomes that depend on it. Although the literature addressing learning in teams is broad, it is also messy and fraught with conceptual confusion. This chapter presents a theoretical integration and review. The goal is to organize theory and research on team learning, identify actionable frameworks and findings, and emphasize promising targets for future research. We emphasize three theoretical foci in our examination of team learning, treating it as multilevel (individual and team, not individual or team), dynamic (iterative and progressive; a process not an outcome), and emergent (outcomes of team learning can manifest in different ways over time). The integrative theoretical heuristic distinguishes team learning process theories, supporting emergent states, team knowledge representations, and respective influences on team performance and effectiveness. Promising directions for theory development and research are discussed
When local interaction does not suffice: Sources of firm innovation in urban Norway
The geographical sources of innovation of firms have been hotly debated. While the traditional view is that physical proximity within city-regions is key for the innovative capacity of firms, the literature on 'global pipelines' has been stressing the importance of establishing communication channels to the outside world. This paper uses a specifically tailored survey of the level of innovation of 1604 firms of more than 10 employees located in the five largest Norwegian city-regions (Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, Trondheim, and Kristiansand) in order to determine a) the geographical dimension of the sources of innovation and b) the factors behind the propensity to innovate in Norwegian firms. The results stress that while interaction with a multitude of partners within Norwegian city-regions or with other national partners has a negligible effect on firm innovation, those firms with a greater diversity of international partners tend to innovate more and introduce more radical innovations. The results also highlight that the roots of this greater innovative capacity lie in a combination of firm – size of firms, share of foreign ownership, and sector – and cultural – the level of open-mindedness of managers – characteristics.Innovation; radical innovation; interaction; pipelines; partnerships; firms; city-regions; Norway

Is innovation always beneficial? A meta-analysis of the relationship between innovation and performance in SMEs
The performance implications of innovation in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have attracted considerable interest among academics and practitioners. However, empirical research on the innovation–performance relationship in SMEs shows controversial results. This meta-analysis synthesizes empirical findings in order to obtain evidence whether and especially under which circumstances smaller, resource-scarce firms benefit from innovation. We find that innovation–performance relationship is context dependent. Factors such as the age of the firm, the type of innovation, and the cultural context affect the impact of innovation on firm performance to a large extent
Culture dimensions in software development industry: The effects of mentoring
Software development is a human centric and sociotechnical activity and like all human activities is influenced by cultural factors. However, software engineering is being further affected because of the globalization in software development. As a result, cultural diversity is influencing software development and its outcomes. The software engineering industry, a very intensive industry regarding human capital, is facing a new era in which software development personnel must adapt to multicultural work environments. Today, many organizations present a multicultural workforce which needs to be managed. This paper analyzes the influence of culture on mentoring relationships within the software engineering industry. Two interesting findings can be concluded from our study: (1) cultural differences affect both formal and informal mentoring, and (2) technical competences are not improved when implementing mentoring relationships
Exploring Enterprise Strategic Orientation and Radical Innovation Success
In today’s digital economy, the effective use of information communications and web-based computational technologies has intensified global competitive environments for all scientific, health care, industrial, social and business communities. Continuous and radical innovations through exploitation and exploration of product development and/or service value co-creation processes using innovative destruction technologies are essential and desirable for enterprises seeking sustainable survival and growth. This study probes into the strategic orientation of radical innovation from exploration and discovery of the representational issues on linking strategic orientation to radical innovation successes. A practical model, at strategic level of the firm with dynamic capabilities is hence proposed. Five hypotheses and the associated five degrees of measure for each orientation are discussed. The study differs from extant literature on innovation field of research results, which are mainly theoretical and rarely address how strategic orientation should be measured. Further research underway is also highlighted
