Symmetric Interconnection Networks from Cubic Crystal Lattices
Torus networks of moderate degree have been widely used in the supercomputer
industry. Tori are superb when used for executing applications that require
near-neighbor communications. Nevertheless, they are not so good when dealing
with global communications. Hence, typical 3D implementations have evolved to
5D networks, among other reasons, to reduce network distances. Most of these
big systems are mixed-radix tori which are not the best option for minimizing
distances and efficiently using network resources. This paper is focused on
improving the topological properties of these networks.
By using integral matrices to deal with Cayley graphs over Abelian groups, we
have been able to propose and analyze a family of high-dimensional grid-based
interconnection networks. As they are built over -dimensional grids that
induce a regular tiling of the space, these topologies have been denoted
\textsl{lattice graphs}. We will focus on cubic crystal lattices for modeling
symmetric 3D networks. Other higher dimensional networks can be composed over
these graphs, as illustrated in this research. Easy network partitioning can
also take advantage of this network composition operation. Minimal routing
algorithms are also provided for these new topologies. Finally, some practical
issues such as implementability and preliminary performance evaluations have
been addressed
V2V-PoseNet: Voxel-to-Voxel Prediction Network for Accurate 3D Hand and Human Pose Estimation from a Single Depth Map
Most of the existing deep learning-based methods for 3D hand and human pose
estimation from a single depth map are based on a common framework that takes a
2D depth map and directly regresses the 3D coordinates of keypoints, such as
hand or human body joints, via 2D convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The
first weakness of this approach is the presence of perspective distortion in
the 2D depth map. While the depth map is intrinsically 3D data, many previous
methods treat depth maps as 2D images that can distort the shape of the actual
object through projection from 3D to 2D space. This compels the network to
perform perspective distortion-invariant estimation. The second weakness of the
conventional approach is that directly regressing 3D coordinates from a 2D
image is a highly non-linear mapping, which causes difficulty in the learning
procedure. To overcome these weaknesses, we firstly cast the 3D hand and human
pose estimation problem from a single depth map into a voxel-to-voxel
prediction that uses a 3D voxelized grid and estimates the per-voxel likelihood
for each keypoint. We design our model as a 3D CNN that provides accurate
estimates while running in real-time. Our system outperforms previous methods
in almost all publicly available 3D hand and human pose estimation datasets and
placed first in the HANDS 2017 frame-based 3D hand pose estimation challenge.

Agile-SD: A Linux-based TCP Congestion Control Algorithm for Supporting High-speed and Short-distance Networks
Recently, high-speed and short-distance networks are widely deployed and
their necessity is rapidly increasing everyday. This type of networks is used
in several network applications; such as Local Area Networks (LAN) and Data
Center Networks (DCN). In LANs and DCNs, high-speed and short-distance networks
are commonly deployed to connect between computing and storage elements in
order to provide rapid services. Indeed, the overall performance of such
networks is significantly influenced by the Congestion Control Algorithm (CCA)
which suffers from the problem of bandwidth under-utilization, especially if
the applied buffer regime is very small. In this paper, a novel loss-based CCA
tailored for high-speed and Short-Distance (SD) networks, namely Agile-SD, has
been proposed. The main contribution of the proposed CCA is to implement the
mechanism of agility factor. Further, intensive simulation experiments have
been carried out to evaluate the performance of Agile-SD compared to Compound
and Cubic which are the default CCAs of the most commonly used operating
systems. The results of the simulation experiments show that the proposed CCA
outperforms the compared CCAs in terms of average throughput, loss ratio and
fairness, especially when a small buffer is applied. Moreover, Agile-SD shows
lower sensitivity to the buffer size change and packet error rate variation

Can a continuous mineral foam explain the stiffening of aged bone tissue? A micromechanical approach to mineral fusion in musculoskeletal tissues
Recent experimental data revealed a stiffening of aged cortical bone tissue, which could not be explained by common multiscale elastic material models. We explain this data by incorporating the role of mineral fusion via a new hierarchical modeling approach exploiting the asymptotic (periodic) homogenization (AH) technique for three-dimensional linear elastic composites. We quantify for the first time the stiffening that is obtained by considering a fused mineral structure in a softer matrix in comparison with a composite having non-fused cubic mineral inclusions. We integrate the AH approach in the Eshelby-based hierarchical mineralized turkey leg tendon model (Tiburtius et al 2014 Biomech. Model. Mechanobiol. 13 1003–23), which can be considered as a base for musculoskeletal mineralized tissue modeling. We model the finest scale compartments, i.e. the extrafibrillar space and the mineralized collagen fibril, by replacing the self-consistent scheme with our AH approach. This way, we perform a parametric analysis at increasing mineral volume fraction, by varying the amount of mineral that is fusing in the axial and transverse tissue directions in both compartments. Our effective stiffness results are in good agreement with those reported for aged human radius and support the argument that the axial stiffening in aged bone tissue is caused by the formation of a continuous mineral foam. Moreover, the proposed theoretical and computational approach supports the design of biomimetic materials which require an overall composite stiffening without increasing the amount of the reinforcing material
