Layout of Graphs with Bounded Tree-Width
A \emph{queue layout} of a graph consists of a total order of the vertices,
and a partition of the edges into \emph{queues}, such that no two edges in the
same queue are nested. The minimum number of queues in a queue layout of a
graph is its \emph{queue-number}. A \emph{three-dimensional (straight-line
grid) drawing} of a graph represents the vertices by points in
and the edges by non-crossing line-segments. This paper contributes three main
results:
(1) It is proved that the minimum volume of a certain type of
three-dimensional drawing of a graph is closely related to the queue-number
of . In particular, if is an -vertex member of a proper minor-closed
family of graphs (such as a planar graph), then has a drawing if and only if has O(1) queue-number.
(2) It is proved that queue-number is bounded by tree-width, thus resolving
an open problem due to Ganley and Heath (2001), and disproving a conjecture of
Pemmaraju (1992). This result provides renewed hope for the positive resolution
of a number of open problems in the theory of queue layouts.
(3) It is proved that graphs of bounded tree-width have three-dimensional
drawings with O(n) volume. This is the most general family of graphs known to
admit three-dimensional drawings with O(n) volume.
The proofs depend upon our results regarding \emph{track layouts} and
\emph{tree-partitions} of graphs, which may be of independent interest.Comment: This is a revised version of a journal paper submitted in October

On Upward Drawings of Trees on a Given Grid
Computing a minimum-area planar straight-line drawing of a graph is known to
be NP-hard for planar graphs, even when restricted to outerplanar graphs.
However, the complexity question is open for trees. Only a few hardness results
are known for straight-line drawings of trees under various restrictions such
as edge length or slope constraints. On the other hand, there exist
polynomial-time algorithms for computing minimum-width (resp., minimum-height)
upward drawings of trees, where the height (resp., width) is unbounded.
In this paper we take a major step in understanding the complexity of the
area minimization problem for strictly-upward drawings of trees, which is one
of the most common styles for drawing rooted trees. We prove that given a
rooted tree and a grid, it is NP-hard to decide whether

Embedding Graphs under Centrality Constraints for Network Visualization
Visual rendering of graphs is a key task in the mapping of complex network
data. Although most graph drawing algorithms emphasize aesthetic appeal,
certain applications such as travel-time maps place more importance on
visualization of structural network properties. The present paper advocates two
graph embedding approaches with centrality considerations to comply with node
hierarchy. The problem is formulated first as one of constrained
multi-dimensional scaling (MDS), and it is solved via block coordinate descent
iterations with successive approximations and guaranteed convergence to a KKT
point. In addition, a regularization term enforcing graph smoothness is
incorporated with the goal of reducing edge crossings. A second approach
leverages the locally-linear embedding (LLE) algorithm which assumes that the
graph encodes data sampled from a low-dimensional manifold. Closed-form
solutions to the resulting centrality-constrained optimization problems are
determined yielding meaningful embeddings. Experimental results demonstrate the
efficacy of both approaches, especially for visualizing large networks on the

Crossing Patterns in Nonplanar Road Networks
We define the crossing graph of a given embedded graph (such as a road
network) to be a graph with a vertex for each edge of the embedding, with two
crossing graph vertices adjacent when the corresponding two edges of the
embedding cross each other. In this paper, we study the sparsity properties of
crossing graphs of real-world road networks. We show that, in large road
networks (the Urban Road Network Dataset), the crossing graphs have connected
components that are primarily trees, and that the remaining non-tree components
are typically sparse (technically, that they have bounded degeneracy). We prove
theoretically that when an embedded graph has a sparse crossing graph, it has
other desirable properties that lead to fast algorithms for shortest paths and
other algorithms important in geographic information systems. Notably, these
graphs have polynomial expansion, meaning that they and all their subgraphs

Box Drawings for Learning with Imbalanced Data
The vast majority of real world classification problems are imbalanced,
meaning there are far fewer data from the class of interest (the positive
class) than from other classes. We propose two machine learning algorithms to
handle highly imbalanced classification problems. The classifiers constructed
by both methods are created as unions of parallel axis rectangles around the
positive examples, and thus have the benefit of being interpretable. The first
algorithm uses mixed integer programming to optimize a weighted balance between
positive and negative class accuracies. Regularization is introduced to improve
generalization performance. The second method uses an approximation in order to
assist with scalability. Specifically, it follows a \textit{characterize then
discriminate} approach, where the positive class is characterized first by
boxes, and then each box boundary becomes a separate discriminative classifier.
This method has the computational advantages that it can be easily
parallelized, and considers only the relevant regions of feature space

-Stars or On Extending a Drawing of a Connected Subgraph
We consider the problem of extending the drawing of a subgraph of a given
plane graph to a drawing of the entire graph using straight-line and polyline
edges. We define the notion of star complexity of a polygon and show that a
drawing of an induced connected subgraph can be extended with at
most bends per edge, where is the
largest star complexity of a face of and is the size of the
largest face of . This result significantly improves the previously known
upper bound of [5] for the case where is connected. We also show
that our bound is worst case optimal up to a small additive constant.
Additionally, we provide an indication of complexity of the problem of testing
whether a star-shaped inner face can be extended to a straight-line drawing of
the graph; this is in contrast to the fact that the same problem is solvable in
linear time for the case of star-shaped outer face [9] and convex inner face
