The effects of secobarbital, diazepam, alcohol, and marihuana on car-driver transfer functions obtained using a driving simulator were studied. The first three substances, all CNS depressants, reduced gain, crossover frequency, and coherence which resulted in poorer tracking performance. Marihuana also impaired tracking performance but the only effect on the transfer function parameters was to reduce coherence

Effective use of negative space in graphic design

This thesis will investigate the potential use of effective negative space to improve the readability of text typography in graphic design. Negative space in two-dimensional design is also referred to as white space -- which is void of text or graphics. Negative space is more than just the background of a design. This thesis will demonstrate negative space as an element of design itself and develop a systematic approach to address negative space as it occurs in the following: margins, background, space for the eye to rest, signal that there is a break or end in the communication, variation in space -- passive vs. dynamic, implied space

Qualitative Reports Of Michigan Medical Marijuana

After hundreds of years of use the medical properties of Marijuana have been marginalized in our society. Qualitative interview data was collected from medical marijuana patients and knowledgeable producers and activists in Michigan about their perceptions and observations on the medical use of marijuana. Patients consistently reported using marijuana to substitute or wean off prescription drugs. All patients and producers who were taking opiate narcotics claimed they reduced overall drug use, especially opiates, by using medical marijuana. Patients and caregivers also claimed medical marijuana was preferred over opiates, eased withdrawal from opiates, and in some cases was perceived as more effective at relieving pain. Other issues explored included the operation of the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act, the formation and operation of medical marijuana centers in the face of countervailing State and federal, opposition, and the varieties and effects of different strains of medical marijuana

The role of psychoactive drugs in the conception, performance, and appreciation of sixties psychedelic music in California and the Southwest

This dissertation examines the various ways in which the experience of psychoactive drugs such as marijuana, LSD, and other substances influenced the development of psychedelic music on the West Coast during the Sixties. The first chapter of this work chronicles the evolution of mainstream America's understanding of psychoactive drugs. It focuses, in particular, on the role of mid-century figures such as Aldous Huxley, Ken Kesey, and Timothy Leary in disseminating the psychedelic paradigm, which held that certain psychoactive substances were capable of helping individuals gain a greater understanding of themselves, others, and the nature of existence. The second chapter of this work explores how the term "psychedelic," and the experiences the term espouses, came to be used as musical descriptors. It specifically details the various ways that amateur participation, musical eclecticism, and technological advances resulted in highly innovative works that provided surreal experiences similar to the drugs that shared their name. Chapter three explores self-report and laboratory research concerning the subjective effects of marijuana and LSD on the experience of sound, music, and creativity. It also presents new findings from a self-report study of 181 participants, which examined the various ways that marijuana affects the appreciation of specific musical sounds. The fourth and final chapter performs a psycho-aesthetic analysis of three examples of psychedelic music using the findings discussed in chapter three and theories from the field of music cognition. It posits various ways in which a direct relationship can be appreciated between the subjective effects of certain psychedelic substances and the experience of psychedelic music. In some instances, it asserts that psychedelic music can be understood to be emulating the effects of substances through its incorporation of sounds and musical structures that are emblematic of the specific effects of these drugs. In others, it suggests that these drugs enhance the experience of psychedelic music by playing upon the altered sensibilities of listeners who were experiencing its sounds under their effects.2017-05-01T00:00:00
