Using design-based research to develop a Mobile Learning Framework for Assessment Feedback

Students’ lack of engagement with their assessment feedback and the lack of dialogue and communication for feedback are some of the issues that affect educational institutions. Despite the affordance that mobile technologies could bring in terms of assessment feedback, research in this area is scarce. The main obstacle for research on mobile learning assessment feedback is the lack of a cohesive and unified mobile learning framework. This paper thus presents a Mobile Learning Framework for Assessment Feedback (MLFAF), developed using a design-based research approach. The framework emerged from the observation of, and reflection upon, the different stages of a research project that investigated the use of a mobile web application for summative and formative assessment feedback. MLFAF can be used as a foundation to study the requirements when developing and implementing wide-scale mobile learning initiatives that underpin longitudinal practices, as opposed to short-term practices. The paper also provides design considerations and implementation guidelines for the use of mobile technology in assessment feedback to increase student engagement and foster dialogic feedback communication channels

This Note examines the competing rationales for and against individual supervisor liability under Title VII, and concludes that supervisor liability is the better reasoned view. It explains how courts construe the term employer to either allow or disallow direct supervisor liability. It discusses the rationales for and against individual supervisor liability. It concludes that individual supervisor liability is the better reasoned view, on construction, policy and comparative grounds, and proposes joint and several liability for supervisors and employers in all Title VII cases, which will clarify when respondeat superior liability is appropriate under Title VII. This proposal will deter Title VII violations, remedy plaintiffs appropriately and protect employers from undue vicarious liability

Social media consist of powerful tools that impact not only communication but relationships among people, thus posing an inherent challenge to the traditional standards of who we are as dental educators and what we can expect of each other. This article examines how the world of social media has changed dental education. Its goal is to outline the complex issues that social media use presents for academic dental institutions and to examine these issues from personal, professional, and legal perspectives. After providing an update on social media, the article considers the advantages and risks associated with the use of social media at the interpersonal, professional, and institutional levels. Policies and legal issues of which academic dental institutions need to be aware from a compliance perspective are examined, along with considerations and resources needed to develop effective social media policies. The challenge facing dental educators is how to capitalize on the benefits that social media offer, while minimizing risks and complying with the various forms of legal constraint

The Americans with Disabilities Act at 25: Cause for Celebration and Renewed Resolve

In this report, we review the progress our nation has made since the historic enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990. We highlight the critical role that P&As have in enforcing the ADA integration mandate, protecting and advocating for people with disabilities still trapped in institutions and ensuring those now living in their community of choice are able to access the supports and services they need to be successful. Our report calls attention to disturbing national trends that threaten to distort and weaken the promise of full community integration. Among them: Moving from Large Facilities to Smaller but Equally Isolating Settings A Proliferation of Intentional "Disability-only" Settings. Outsized Influence of A Small Minority of Individuals Over Olmstead Enforcement Activities Public Demand for Increased Use of State Psychiatric Hospitals and Involuntary Outpatient Commitment. School System Reluctance to Move away from Segregated Classrooms. Finally, the report provides recommendations for federal and state action to mitigate these threats and to vigorously promote community-based services and supports for Americans with disabilities

Next generation software environments : principles, problems, and research directions

The past decade has seen a burgeoning of research and development in software environments. Conferences have been devoted to the topic of practical environments, journal papers produced, and commercial systems sold. Given all the activity, one might expect a great deal of consensus on issues, approaches, and techniques. This is not the case, however. Indeed, the term "environment" is still used in a variety of conflicting ways. Nevertheless substantial progress has been made and we are at least nearing consensus on many critical issues.The purpose of this paper is to characterize environments, describe several important principles that have emerged in the last decade or so, note current open problems, and describe some approaches to these problems, with particular emphasis on the activities of one large-scale research program, the Arcadia project. Consideration is also given to two related topics: empirical evaluation and technology transition. That is, how can environments and their constituents be evaluated, and how can new developments be moved effectively into the production sector

A Common Path: Navigating Your Way to Successful Negotiations in the Workplace

[Excerpt] Creating change in the workplace can be a difficult process, especially if it requires asking for job accommodations from your supervisor or boss. For many, requesting assistance can feel like an intimidating task. If an individual has decided not to disclose his or her disability or significant health issue to an employer, this situation may feel even more difficult. Yet often times accommodations are necessary to create a comfortable and effective working environment. The good news is that this interaction between employee and boss is not nearly as scary as it can appear to be. It can be, in fact, a very rewarding and empowering experience. With this in mind, “Working it Out Together” held an exciting seminar with three expert panelists. Despite increasing legal requirements in planning and documentation, transition outcomes for secondary LD students continue to fall short of pre-graduation expectations.
