    An FPT Algorithm for Minimum Additive Spanner Problem

    For a positive integer t and a graph G, an additive t-spanner of G is a spanning subgraph in which the distance between every pair of vertices is at most the original distance plus t. The Minimum Additive t-Spanner Problem is to find an additive t-spanner with the minimum number of edges in a given graph, which is known to be NP-hard. Since we need to care about global properties of graphs when we deal with additive t-spanners, the Minimum Additive t-Spanner Problem is hard to handle and hence only few results are known for it. In this paper, we study the Minimum Additive t-Spanner Problem from the viewpoint of parameterized complexity. We formulate a parameterized version of the problem in which the number of removed edges is regarded as a parameter, and give a fixed-parameter algorithm for it. We also extend our result to the case with both a multiplicative approximation factor ? and an additive approximation parameter ?, which we call (?, ?)-spanners

    Simple Linear-Size Additive Emulators

    Given an input graph G=(V,E)G = (V, E), an additive emulator H=(V,E′,w)H = (V, E', w) is a sparse weighted graph that preserves all distances in GG with small additive error. A recent line of inquiry has sought to determine the best additive error achievable in the sparsest setting, when HH has a linear number of edges. In particular, the work of [Kogan and Parter, ICALP 2023], following [Pettie, ICALP 2007], constructed linear size emulators with +O(n0.222)+O(n^{0.222}) additive error. It is known that the worst-case additive error must be at least +Ω(n2/29)+\Omega(n^{2/29}) due to [Lu, Vassilevska Williams, Wein, and Xu, SODA 2022]. We present a simple linear-size emulator construction that achieves additive error +O(n0.191)+O(n^{0.191}). Our approach extends the path-buying framework developed by [Baswana, Kavitha, Mehlhorn, and Pettie, SODA 2005] and [Vassilevska Williams and Bodwin, SODA 2016] to the setting of sparse additive emulators.Comment: SOSA2

    Lower Bounds on Sparse Spanners, Emulators, and Diameter-reducing shortcuts

    We prove better lower bounds on additive spanners and emulators, which are lossy compression schemes for undirected graphs, as well as lower bounds on shortcut sets, which reduce the diameter of directed graphs. We show that any O(n)-size shortcut set cannot bring the diameter below Omega(n^{1/6}), and that any O(m)-size shortcut set cannot bring it below Omega(n^{1/11}). These improve Hesse\u27s [Hesse, 2003] lower bound of Omega(n^{1/17}). By combining these constructions with Abboud and Bodwin\u27s [Abboud and Bodwin, 2017] edge-splitting technique, we get additive stretch lower bounds of +Omega(n^{1/13}) for O(n)-size spanners and +Omega(n^{1/18}) for O(n)-size emulators. These improve Abboud and Bodwin\u27s +Omega(n^{1/22}) lower bounds

    All-Pairs Approximate Shortest Paths and Distance Oracle Preprocessing

    Given an undirected, unweighted graph G on n nodes, there is an O(n^2*poly log(n))-time algorithm that computes a data structure called distance oracle of size O(n^{5/3}*poly log(n)) answering approximate distance queries in constant time. For nodes at distance d the distance estimate is between d and 2d + 1. This new distance oracle improves upon the oracles of Patrascu and Roditty (FOCS 2010), Abraham and Gavoille (DISC 2011), and Agarwal and Brighten Godfrey (PODC 2013) in terms of preprocessing time, and upon the oracle of Baswana and Sen (SODA 2004) in terms of stretch. The running time analysis is tight (up to logarithmic factors) due to a recent lower bound of Abboud and Bodwin (STOC 2016). Techniques include dominating sets, sampling, balls, and spanners, and the main contribution lies in the way these techniques are combined. Perhaps the most interesting aspect from a technical point of view is the application of a spanner without incurring its constant additive stretch penalty
