Mutation testing from probabilistic finite state machines

    Get PDF
Mutation testing traditionally involves mutating a program in order to produce a set of mutants and using these mutants in order to either estimate the effectiveness of a test suite or to drive test generation. Recently, however, this approach has been applied to specifications such as those written as finite state machines. This paper extends mutation testing to finite state machine models in which transitions have associated probabilities. The paper describes several ways of mutating a probabilistic finite state machine (PFSM) and shows how test sequences that distinguish between a PFSM and its mutants can be generated. Testing then involves applying each test sequence multiple times, observing the resultant output sequences and using results from statistical sampling theory in order to compare the observed frequency of each output sequence with that expected

Automated unique input output sequence generation for conformance testing of FSMs

This paper describes a method for automatically generating unique input output (UIO) sequences for FSM conformance testing. UIOs are used in conformance testing to verify the end state of a transition sequence. UIO sequence generation is represented as a search problem and genetic algorithms are used to search this space. Empirical evidence indicates that the proposed method yields considerably better (up to 62% better) results compared with random UIO sequence generation

Thesis (Master)--Izmir Institute of Technology, Computer Engineering, Izmir, 2009Includes bibliographical references (leaves: 52-56)Text in English; Abstract: Turkish and Englishix, 92 leavesFirewalls lead at the front line of a computer network to restrict unauthorized access. The desired security level is determined by a policy and implemented by a firewall which not only has to be effective but also stable and reliable service is expected. In order to verify the level of security of the system, testing is required. The objective of this thesis is to test a firewall with software testing techniques taking into consideration the nominated policy and the firewall. Iptables software was examined and tested by two different algorithms that were modified according to software testing techniques, and the results were observed. Packets sent through the Firewall Under Test (FUT) are compared to packets passed through the FUT and test results were observed. The security performance of the modified algorithms proved to be successful

Test selection for a nondeterministic FSM

In testing Nondeterministic Finite State Machines (NFSMs), testing process becomes hypothesis testing, if test sequence repetition numbers are not large enough to satisfy the so-called complete-testing assumption. In this paper, we present a method to determine the repetition numbers of test sequences assuming that each transition is executed with a fixed probability when nondeterministic choice is made. The proposed method ensures the test pass probability of restricted class of faulty machines to be never greater than a given value. Also, we discuss how to select a test suite for NFSMs that guarantees the minimal total test length. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved
