    Improved test methods for determining lightning-induced voltages in aircraft

    A lumped parameter transmission line with a surge impedance matching that of the aircraft and its return lines was evaluated as a replacement for earlier current generators. Various test circuit parameters were evaluated using a 1/10 scale relative geometric model. Induced voltage response was evaluated by taking measurements on the NASA-Dryden Digital Fly by Wire F-8 aircraft. Return conductor arrangements as well as other circuit changes were also evaluated, with all induced voltage measurements being made on the same circuit for comparison purposes. The lumped parameter transmission line generates a concave front current wave with the peak di/dt near the peak of the current wave which is more representative of lightning. However, the induced voltage measurements when scaled by appropriate scale factors (peak current or di/dt) resulting from both techniques yield comparable results

    This short essay examines the current conditions in the US telecommunications sector (April 1999). We examine the impact of technological and regulatory change on market structure and business strategy. Among others, we examine the impact on pricing of digitization and the emergence of internet telephony. We briefly examine the impact of the 1996 Telecommunications Act on market structure and strategy in conjunction with the history of regulation and antitrust intervention in the telecommunications sector. After discussing the impact of wireless technologies, we conclude by venturing into some short term predictions. We express concern about the derailment of the implementation of the 1996 Act by the aggressive legal tactics of the entrenched monopolists (the local exchange carriers), and we point to the real danger that the intent of Congress in passing the 1996 Act to promote competition in telecommunications will not be realized. After discussing the impact of wireless technologies, we comment on the wave of mergers in the Telecommunications and cable industries.

    The collision induced spectrum in equilibrium H2(eH2) and in equilibrium H2-He mixtures have been determined at densities below 120 amagat in the region 500 to 900 cm/1 at 293, 195, and 77K. The collision induced spectrum of normal H2 at 77K in the region 25 to 490 cm/1 has also been determined. The details of the experiment, experimental results, and comparison with previous results are presented.     Performance and emissions of compression ignition engine fueled with preheated blend of vegetable oil

    Now days fossil fuel has been a problem that can been use in a compression ignition engine. Straight vegetable oil is one of the most reliable fuel that suitable for diesel engine. The scope of study of this study is focused on performance and emission of the straight vegetable oil from the grocery store to compare with crude palm oil from UTHM pilot plan. S5, S10 and S15 straight vegetable oil fuel is used for this experiment. This straight vegetable oil is also compared with an natural diesel in a combustion-ignition engine. The test is conducted with UTHM dynomometer which is located at automotive lab. The properties of the vegetable oil is tested for density, kinematic viscosity, water content, acids value and flash points. Brake power, flywheel torque, (in term of hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxygen content and smoke opacity) and tested for performance and emission. Results obtained show that flywheel torque that has been produced from the biodiesel fuels are less than the natural diesel (ND). Biodiesel emission results shown a better emission compared to the ND fuels. The CO2, CO, HC and O2 content that released from the biodiesel fuels are clearly lower than the ND fuels.     Redshifted X-rays from the material accreting onto TW Hya: evidence of a low-latitude accretion spot

    High resolution spectroscopy, providing constraints on plasma motions and temperatures, is a powerful means to investigate the structure of accretion streams in CTTS. In particular, the accretion shock region, where the accreting material is heated to temperatures of a few MK as it continues its inward bulk motion, can be probed by X-ray spectroscopy. To attempt to detect for the first time the motion of this X-ray-emitting post-shock material, we searched for a Doppler shift in the deep Chandra/HETGS observation of the CTTS TW Hya. This test should unveil the nature of this X-ray emitting plasma component in CTTS, and constrain the accretion stream geometry. We searched for a Doppler shift in the X-ray emission from TW Hya with two different methods, by measuring the position of a selected sample of emission lines, and by fitting the whole TW Hya X-ray spectrum, allowing the line-of-sight velocity to vary. We found that the plasma at T~2-4 MK has a line-of-sight velocity of 38.3+/-5.1 km/s with respect to the stellar photosphere. This result definitively confirms that this X-ray-emitting material originates in the post-shock region, at the base of the accretion stream, and not in coronal structures. The comparison of the observed velocity along the line of sight, 38.3+/-5.1 km/s, with the inferred intrinsic velocity of the post shock of TW Hya, v_post~110-120 km/s, indicates that the footpoints of the accretion streams on TW Hya are located at low latitudes on the stellar surface. Our results indicate that complex magnetic field geometries, such as that of TW Hya, permit low-latitude accretion spots. Moreover, since on TW Hya the redshift of the soft X-ray emission is very similar to that of the narrow component of the CIV resonance doublet at 1550 Ang, as found by Ardila et al. (2013), then the plasma at 2-4 MK and that at 0.1 MK likely originate in the same post-shock regions.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics; 2nd version after language editor corrections; 16 pages, 8 figures, 6 table

The SDAS takes the data obtained from sensors located on the solar heating and/or cooling system, processes the data into a suitable format, stores the data for a period of time, and provides the capability for both telephone retrieval by the Central Data Processing System (CDPS) and manual retrieval of the data for transfer to the central site.
