    Socializing the Semantic Gap: A Comparative Survey on Image Tag Assignment, Refinement and Retrieval

    Where previous reviews on content-based image retrieval emphasize on what can be seen in an image to bridge the semantic gap, this survey considers what people tag about an image. A comprehensive treatise of three closely linked problems, i.e., image tag assignment, refinement, and tag-based image retrieval is presented. While existing works vary in terms of their targeted tasks and methodology, they rely on the key functionality of tag relevance, i.e. estimating the relevance of a specific tag with respect to the visual content of a given image and its social context. By analyzing what information a specific method exploits to construct its tag relevance function and how such information is exploited, this paper introduces a taxonomy to structure the growing literature, understand the ingredients of the main works, clarify their connections and difference, and recognize their merits and limitations. For a head-to-head comparison between the state-of-the-art, a new experimental protocol is presented, with training sets containing 10k, 100k and 1m images and an evaluation on three test sets, contributed by various research groups. Eleven representative works are implemented and evaluated. Putting all this together, the survey aims to provide an overview of the past and foster progress for the near future.Comment: to appear in ACM Computing Survey

    Using the Ï•\phi-mapping method, we argue that ferromagnetic spin-triplet superconductors allow formation of unstable magnetic monopoles.     Several technological developments like the Internet, mobile devices and Social Networks have spurred the sharing of images in unprecedented volumes, making tagging and commenting a common habit. Despite the recent progress in image analysis, the problem of Semantic Gap still hinders machines in fully understand the rich semantic of a shared photo. In this book, we tackle this problem by exploiting social network contributions. A comprehensive treatise of three linked problems on image annotation is presented, with a novel experimental protocol used to test eleven state-of-the-art methods. Three novel approaches to annotate, under stand the sentiment and predict the popularity of an image are presented. We conclude with the many challenges and opportunities ahead for the multimedia community

    Self-dual Vortices in the Abelian Chern-Simons Model with Two Complex Scalar Fields

    Making use of Ï•\phi-mapping topological current method, we discuss the self-dual vortices in the Abelian Chern-Simons model with two complex scalar fields. For each scalar field, an exact nontrivial equation with a topological term which is missing in many references is derived analytically. The general angular momentum is obtained. The magnetic flux which relates the two scalar fields is calculated. Furthermore, we investigate the vortex evolution processes, and find that because of the present of the vortex molecule, these evolution processes is more complicated than the vortex evolution processes in the corresponding single scalar field model.Comment: 9 pages, no figure

    Elastoplastic Damaging Model for Adhesive Anchor Systems. II: Numerical and Experimental Validation

    This paper presents the numerical and experimental validation of the analytical elastoplastic damaging model proposed in the companion paper (Part I). The validation was carried out by describing the pullout failure of epoxy adhesive anchors. Pullout tests were simulated numerically and performed experimentally. Several specimens made of a rebar embedded in a hardened concrete cylinder by means of polyester resin were tested. Conventional strain gauges and acoustic emission (AE) sensors were used to evaluate the structural response of the system and to monitor the onset and progression of structural damage, respectively. The parametric analysis and the moment tensor analysis of the AE data were used to discriminate among different sources of damage. The results show the ability of the model to predict the response of the anchors and the suitability of the AE method to monitor damage onset and propagation and to discriminate among different source of damage

    Hadamard’s Variational Formula in Terms of Stress and Strain Tensors

    Starting from a Lagrangian action functional for two scalar fields we construct, by variational methods, the Laplacian Green function for a bounded domain and an appropriate stress tensor. By a further variation, imposed by a given vector field, we arrive at an interior version of the Hadamard variational formula, previously considered by P. Garabedian. It gives the variation of the Green function in terms of a pairing between the stress tensor and a strain tensor in the interior of the domain, this contrasting the classical Hadamard formula which is expressed as a pure boundary variation
