Telecommunications Hardware and Software Systems made in CMEA Countries and Yugoslavia

The telecommunications hardware and software systems used in CMEA (Council of Mutual Economic Assistance) countries and Yugoslavia are a most complex field of investigation. For this reason in this study the following approach has been adopted: Rather than collecting and presenting all CMEA telecommunications hardware and software systems in a directory type of form, which would neither be complete nor fully up to date (even at the time of data collection), a general analysis is given, with sufficient detailed information to make it useful. During the analysis we will discuss in depth the different classes of telecommunications hardware and software systems, their past, present, and potential future. In order to do this, the analysis has to include all major levels of the International Standardization Organization's Open System Interconnection (ISO/OSI) Reference Model--and this is the way we handle the telecommunications hardware and software systems of the CMEA countries and of Yugoslavia

United States Air Force Graduate Degrees from 1990 to 2000: A Comparison

Throughout its history, the United States Air Force has been concerned with technical graduate education. In 1947, the Ridenour Report stated the importance and need of Air Force officers with technical graduate degrees. This emphasis has served the Air Force well, but there is concern among senior Air Force leaders that there has been an erosion of these technical skills and graduate education. This research will examine the issues surrounding technical graduate education in the Air Force and will address the possible loss of such technical education. The results of this research provide specific statistical data and analysis on the types and numbers of graduate degrees achieved by Air Force line officers in the years 1990 and 2000. It will discuss the results for all Air Force line officers and will then examine specific Air Force Specialty Codes. This research will enable further investigation into the impact that graduate education will play on the future of the United States Air Force. Based on the data analysis, this study concludes that there has been no significant change in the percentage of overall technical graduate education from 1990 to 2000. There has, in fact, been a slight increase in the percentage of technical graduate degrees in the following career fields: Pilots (1 lXX), Civil Engineers (32EX), Communications and Information Officers (33 SX), and Developmental Engineers (63 AX). All other areas examined showed no statistically significant changes

The interface between application controls and integrity controls in modern computer systems

An auditor's interest in such an environment is primarily an understanding of the controls over the computer system and the risk of error and fraud. When dealing with controls two issues are important. The first deals with the ability to control a complex computer system. Unless the control issues are understood and the impact of various alternatives appreciated it would be impossible to control a computer system. Under such circumstances there is a high risk of error and fraud and the information present in a business could be very unreliable. Secondly the auditor needs to evaluate controls for purposes of his audit. Usually the objective is to assure himself that they adequately safeguard the business assets and prevent or detect errors present in the accounting records of the concern..

Data Base Management Systems Panel. Third workshop summary

The discussions and results of a review by a panel of data base management system (DRMS) experts of various aspects of the use of DBMSs within NASA/Office of Space and Terrestrial Applications (OSTA) and related organizations are summarized. The topics discussed included the present status of the use of DBMS technology and of the various ongoing DBMS-related efforts within NASA. The report drafts of a study that seeks to determine the functional requirements for a generalized DBMS for the NASA/OSTA and related data bases are examined. Future problems and possibilities with the use of DBMS technology are also considered. A list of recommendations for NASA/OSTA data systems is included

A Study of the Computer Software Products Industry

In this paper the computer software products industry is defined as consisting of those companies who sell predefined and prepackaged software for execution on the purchaser\u27s medium or large sca le digital computer. This industry is currently playing a crucial role, as a severe bottleneck in software development exists. Our goal is to present an analysis of this industry covering a broad range of issues. Our hope is to present a picture which will enlighten both industry consumers and part icipants concerning the essent ial forces which govern growth and competition in this arena. To support our synthesis, we have performed an indepth study of over twenty companies and interviewed several industry leaders. Among our contributions is a taxonomy which permits a characterization of the diverse product offerings. Also we present figures which describe the industry in terms of the number of firms, the size of the firms, and the number of firms entering and leaving each year. We show how the firms can be segmented into three groups and discuss interactions among members of different groups. Finally we place the industry on the evolutionary life cycle and conclude with some thoughts about its future
