Intelligent Integrated Management for Telecommunication Networks
As the size of communication networks keeps on growing, faster connections, cooperating technologies and the divergence of equipment and data communications, the management of the resulting networks gets additional important and time-critical. More advanced tools are needed to support this activity. In this article we describe the design and implementation of a management platform using Artificial Intelligent reasoning technique. For this goal we make use of an expert system. This study focuses on an intelligent framework and a language for formalizing knowledge management descriptions and combining them with existing OSI management model. We propose a new paradigm where the intelligent network management is integrated into the conceptual repository of management information called Managed Information Base (MIB). This paper outlines the development of an expert system prototype based in our propose GDMO+ standard and describes the most important facets, advantages and drawbacks that were found after prototyping our proposal
Infrastructural Drivers of Online Shopping: An International Perspective
While online shopping expenditures have been increasing in both developed and developing economies, they still account for a small share of total retail sales. Significant differences also exist across countries in the amount of money consumers spend on a per capita basis on online purchases. The authors utilize the conceptual foundations of infrastructural framework to examine the effects of infrastructural drivers on online shopping expenditures in 43 countries. Findings show that per capita telecommunications investments and per capita gross national income are significantly associated with per capita online shopping expenditures. Privacy protection, Internet penetration, and credit card penetration were not significant
Analysis of the Effectiveness of Tariffs for Telecommunications Services with Broadband Access
The purpose of the study was to analyze the efficiency of tariffs of companies providing telecommunications services with broadband access. The analysis was carried out with respect to both the efficiency of the tariff system in general and its individual elements. The structure of costs for services providing access to the Internet and networks of digital television has been studied. The scheme of the analysis of the product and cost parts of the tariff system of telecommunication companies is proposed. The advantages and disadvantages of pricing strategies for telecommunication services are discussed
Telecommunications Network Planning and Maintenance
Telecommunications network operators are on a constant challenge to provide new services which require ubiquitous broadband access. In an attempt to do so, they are faced with many problems such as the network coverage or providing the guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS). Network planning is a multi-objective optimization problem which involves clustering the area of interest by minimizing a cost function which includes relevant parameters, such as installation cost, distance between user and base station, supported traffic, quality of received signal, etc. On the other hand, service assurance deals with the disorders that occur in hardware or software of the managed network. This paper presents a large number of multicriteria techniques that have been developed to deal with different kinds of problems regarding network planning and service assurance. The state of the art presented will help the reader to develop a broader understanding of the problems in the domain
Process Framework for Subscriber Management and Retention in Nigerian Telecommunication Industry
in the global telecommunication industry. Hence, a dominant approach for subscriber
management and retention is churn control, since it is cheaper to retain an existing
subscriber than acquiring a new one. Predictive modeling employs the use of data mining
techniques to identify patterns and provide a result that a group of subscribers are likely to
churn in the near future. However, the effectiveness of subscriber retention strategy in an
organization can be further boosted if the reason for churn and the timing of churn can also
be predicted.
In this paper, we propose a data mining process framework that can be used to predict
churn, determine when a subscriber is likely to churn, provides the reason why a subscriber
may churn, and recommend appropriate intervention strategy for customer retention using
a combination of statistical and machine learning techniques. This experiment is carried
out using data from a major telecom operator in Nigeria
Time and volume based optimal pricing strategies for telecommunication networks
In the recent past, there have been several initiatives by major network providers such as Turk Telekom lead the industry towards network capacity distribution in Turkey. In this study, we use a monopoly pricing model to examine the optimal pricing strategies for “pay-per-volume” and “pay-per-time” based leasing of data networks. Traditionally, network capacity distribution includes short/long term bandwidth and/or usage time leasing. Each consumer has a choice to select volume based pricing or connection time based pricing. When customers choose connection time based pricing, their optimal behavior would be utilizing the bandwidth capacity fully therefore it can cause network to burst. Also, offering pay-per-volume scheme to the consumer provides the advantage of leasing the excess capacity for other potential customers for network provider.
We examine the following issues in this study:
(i) What are the extra benefits to the network provider for providing the volume based pricing scheme? and
(ii) Does the amount of demand (number of customers enter the market) change?
The contribution of this paper is to show that pay-per-volume is a viable alternative for a large number of customers, and that judicious pricing for pay-per-volume is profitable for the network provider
