The California Cooperative Remote Sensing Project
The USDA, the California Department of Water Resources (CDWR), the Remote Sensing Research Program of the University of California (UCB) and NASA have completed a 4-yr cooperative project on the use of remote sensing in monitoring California agriculture. This report is a summary of the project and the final report of NASA's contribution to it. The cooperators developed procedures that combined the use of LANDSAT Multispectral Scanner imagery and digital data with good ground survey data for area estimation and mapping of the major crops in California. An inventory of the Central Valley was conducted as an operational test of the procedures. The satellite and survey data were acquired by USDA and UCB and processed by CDWR and NASA. The inventory was completed on schedule, thus demonstrating the plausibility of the approach, although further development of the data processing system is necessary before it can be used efficiently in an operational environment
Irrigated lands assessment for water management: Technique test
A procedure for estimating irrigated land using full frame LANDSAT imagery was demonstrated. Relatively inexpensive interpretation of multidate LANDSAT photographic enlargements was used to produce a map of irrigated land in California. The LANDSAT and ground maps were then linked by regression equations to enable precise estimation of irrigated land area by county, basin, and statewide. Land irrigated at least once in California in 1979 was estimated to be 9.86 million acres, with an expected error of less than 1.75% at the 99% level of confidence. To achieve the same level of error with a ground-only sample would have required 3 to 5 times as many ground sample units statewide. A procedure for relatively inexpensive computer classification of LANDSAT digital data to irrigated land categories was also developed. This procedure is based on ratios of MSS band 7 and 5, and gave good results for several counties in the Central Valley
Nationwide forestry applications program. Analysis of forest classification accuracy
The development of LANDSAT classification accuracy assessment techniques, and of a computerized system for assessing wildlife habitat from land cover maps are considered. A literature review on accuracy assessment techniques and an explanation for the techniques development under both projects are included along with listings of the computer programs. The presentations and discussions at the National Working Conference on LANDSAT Classification Accuracy are summarized. Two symposium papers which were published on the results of this project are appended

Practical and Rich User Digitization
A long-standing vision in computer science has been to evolve computing
devices into proactive assistants that enhance our productivity, health and
wellness, and many other facets of our lives. User digitization is crucial in
achieving this vision as it allows computers to intimately understand their
users, capturing activity, pose, routine, and behavior. Today's consumer
devices - like smartphones and smartwatches provide a glimpse of this
potential, offering coarse digital representations of users with metrics such
as step count, heart rate, and a handful of human activities like running and
biking. Even these very low-dimensional representations are already bringing
value to millions of people's lives, but there is significant potential for
improvement. On the other end, professional, high-fidelity comprehensive user
digitization systems exist. For example, motion capture suits and multi-camera
rigs that digitize our full body and appearance, and scanning machines such as
MRI capture our detailed anatomy. However, these carry significant user
practicality burdens, such as financial, privacy, ergonomic, aesthetic, and
instrumentation considerations, that preclude consumer use. In general, the
higher the fidelity of capture, the lower the user's practicality. Most
conventional approaches strike a balance between user practicality and
digitization fidelity.
My research aims to break this trend, developing sensing systems that
increase user digitization fidelity to create new and powerful computing
experiences while retaining or even improving user practicality and
accessibility, allowing such technologies to have a societal impact. Armed with
such knowledge, our future devices could offer longitudinal health tracking,
more productive work environments, full body avatars in extended reality, and
embodied telepresence experiences, to name just a few domains.Comment: PhD thesi
A Digitization and Conversion Tool for Imaged Drawings to Intelligent Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID)
In the Fourth Industrial Revolution, artificial intelligence technology and big data science are emerging rapidly. To apply these informational technologies to the engineering industries, it is essential to digitize the data that are currently archived in image or hard-copy format. For previously created design drawings, the consistency between the design products is reduced in the digitization process, and the accuracy and reliability of estimates of the equipment and materials by the digitized drawings are remarkably low. In this paper, we propose a method and system of automatically recognizing and extracting design information from imaged piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) drawings and automatically generating digitized drawings based on the extracted data by using digital image processing techniques such as template matching and sliding window method. First, the symbols are recognized by template matching and extracted from the imaged P&ID drawing and registered automatically in the database. Then, lines and text are recognized and extracted from in the imaged P&ID drawing using the sliding window method and aspect ratio calculation, respectively. The extracted symbols for equipment and lines are associated with the attributes of the closest text and are stored in the database in neutral format. It is mapped with the predefined intelligent P&ID information and transformed to commercial P&ID tool formats with the associated information stored. As illustrated through the validation case studies, the intelligent digitized drawings generated by the above automatic conversion system, the consistency of the design product is maintained, and the problems experienced with the traditional and manual P&ID input method by engineering companies, such as time consumption, missing items, and misspellings, are solved through the final fine-tune validation process.11Ysciescopu
An integrated study of earth resources in the state of California using remote sensing techniques
The author has identified the following significant results. The effects on estimates of monthly volume runoff were determined separately for each of the following parameters: precipitation, evapotranspiration, lower zone and upper zone tension water capacity, imperviousness of the watershed, and percent of the watershed occupied by riparian vegetation, streams, and lakes. The most sensitive and critical parameters were found to be precipitation during the entire year and springtime evapotranspiration
