Restricted Dynamic Programming Heuristic for Precedence Constrained Bottleneck Generalized TSP
We develop a restricted dynamical programming heuristic for a complicated traveling salesman problem: a) cities are grouped into clusters, resp. Generalized TSP; b) precedence constraints are imposed on the order of visiting the clusters, resp. Precedence Constrained TSP; c) the costs of moving to the next cluster and doing the required job inside one are aggregated in a minimax manner, resp. Bottleneck TSP; d) all the costs may depend on the sequence of previously visited clusters, resp. Sequence-Dependent TSP or Time Dependent TSP. Such multiplicity of constraints complicates the use of mixed integer-linear programming, while dynamic programming (DP) benefits from them; the latter may be supplemented with a branch-and-bound strategy, which necessitates a “DP-compliant” heuristic. The proposed heuristic always yields a feasible solution, which is not always the case with heuristics, and its precision may be tuned until it becomes the exact DP
Renormalization for Discrete Optimization
The renormalization group has proven to be a very powerful tool in physics
for treating systems with many length scales. Here we show how it can be
adapted to provide a new class of algorithms for discrete optimization. The
heart of our method uses renormalization and recursion, and these processes are
embedded in a genetic algorithm. The system is self-consistently optimized on
all scales, leading to a high probability of finding the ground state
configuration. To demonstrate the generality of such an approach, we perform
tests on traveling salesman and spin glass problems. The results show that our

A new exact algorithm for the multi-depot vehicle routing problem under capacity and route length constraints
This article presents an exact algorithm for the multi-depot vehicle routing problem (MDVRP) under capacity and route length constraints. The MDVRP is formulated using a vehicle-flow and a set-partitioning formulation, both of which are exploited at different stages of the algorithm. The lower bound computed with the vehicle-flow formulation is used to eliminate non-promising edges, thus reducing the complexity of the pricing subproblem used to solve the set-partitioning formulation. Several classes of valid inequalities are added to strengthen both formulations, including a new family of valid inequalities used to forbid cycles of an arbitrary length. To validate our approach, we also consider the capacitated vehicle routing problem (CVRP) as a particular case of the MDVRP, and conduct extensive computational experiments on several instances from the literature to show its effectiveness. The computational results show that the proposed algorithm is competitive against stateof-the-art methods for these two classes of vehicle routing problems, and is able to solve to optimality some previously open instances. Moreover, for the instances that cannot be solved by the proposed algorithm, the final lower bounds prove stronger than those obtained by earlier methods
Reachability cuts for the vehicle routing problem with time windows
This paper introduces a class of cuts, called reachability cuts, for the Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows (VRPTW). Reachability cuts are closely related to cuts derived from precedence constraints in the Asymmetric Traveling Salesman Problem with Time Windows and to k-path cuts for the VRPTW. In particular, any reachability cut dominates one or more k-path cuts. The paper presents separation procedures for reachability cuts and reports computational experiments on well-known VRPTW instances. The computational results suggest that reachability cuts can be highly useful as cutting planes for certain VRPTW instances.Routing; time windows; precedence constraints
Defragmenting the Module Layout of a Partially Reconfigurable Device
Modern generations of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) allow for
partial reconfiguration. In an online context, where the sequence of modules to
be loaded on the FPGA is unknown beforehand, repeated insertion and deletion of
modules leads to progressive fragmentation of the available space, making
defragmentation an important issue. We address this problem by propose an
online and an offline component for the defragmentation of the available space.
We consider defragmenting the module layout on a reconfigurable device. This
corresponds to solving a two-dimensional strip packing problem. Problems of
this type are NP-hard in the strong sense, and previous algorithmic results are
rather limited. Based on a graph-theoretic characterization of feasible
packings, we develop a method that can solve two-dimensional defragmentation
instances of practical size to optimality. Our approach is validated for a set
