Design and simulation of hydraulic shaking table

    Get PDF
Recent industrial progress and computational technology made it possible to construct more complex structures. Vibration of these structures due to seismic strength must be measured and proved to prevent them from damage when they are subjected to earthquake. However, the accuracy of estimating the effect of vibrating structures is limited by the mathematical models, which are normally simplified from the actual complex structures. Due to this problem, a study on the development of shaking table is proposed. The main purpose of this study is to obtain the design specifications for a 1-axis (horizontal) hydraulic shaking table with medium loading, which can function primarily as an earthquake simulator and a dynamic structural testing apparatus. The project employs a three stage electrohydraulic servovalve, actuator system complete with hydraulic system as the power and drive unit. Mathematical model for closed loop control experimentation was presented and used to investigate the influence of various parameters on the overall system. The investigation includes the study on the effect of controller gain setting (for PD and AFC), disturbances and system stability. Time domain analysis using computer simulation was conducted to explain and predict the system’s response. Comparison between PD and PD-AFC controllers was done and it was found that latter PD-AFC fulfills the performance and robustness specifications for this project. Other design outcome that limits the change of disturbances on the system was also identified and taken as the framework for real world. This suggests that the next stage in implementation of the designed system can be made for the purpose of an earthquake simulator, since it works very well especially at low frequency level of shakin

A Graph Rewriting Approach for Transformational Design of Digital Systems

    Get PDF
Transformational design integrates design and verification. It combines “correctness by construction” and design creativity by the use of pre-proven behaviour preserving transformations as design steps. The formal aspects of this methodology are hidden in the transformations. A constraint is the availability of a design representation with a compositional formal semantics. Graph representations are useful design representations because of their visualisation of design information. In this paper graph rewriting theory, as developed in the last twenty years in mathematics, is shown to be a useful basis for a formal framework for transformational design. The semantic aspects of graphs which are no part of graph rewriting theory are included by the use of attributed graphs. The used attribute algebra, table algebra, is a relation algebra derived from database theory. The combination of graph rewriting, table algebra and transformational design is new

The design of a research water table

    Get PDF
A complete design for a research water table is presented. Following a brief discussion of the analogy between water and compressible-gas flows (hydraulic analogy), the components of the water table and their function are described. The major design considerations are discussed, and the final design is presented

A methodology for the lightweight design of modern transfer machine tools

    Get PDF
This paper deals with a modern design approach via finite elements in the definition of the main structural elements (rotary table and working unit) of an innovative family of transfer machine tools. Using the concepts of green design and manufacture, as well as sustainable development thinking, the paper highlights the advantages derived from their application in this specific field (i.e., the clever use of lightweight materials to allow ruling out high-consumption hydraulic pump systems). The design is conceived in a modular way, so that the final solution can cover transfers from four to 15 working stations. Two versions of the machines are examined. The first one has a rotary table with nine divisions, which can be considered as a prototype: this machine has been studied in order to set up the numerical predictive model, then validated by experimental tests. The second one, equipped with a rotary table with 15 divisions, is the biggest of the range: this machine has been entirely designed with the aid of the previously developed numerical model. The loading input forces for the analyses have been evaluated experimentally via drilling operations carried out on a three-axis CNC unit. The definition of the design force made it possible to accurately assess both the rotary table and the working units installed in the machine

Cuisine and conversation: the ritual of dining

My research and creative practice is centered on the above themes; namely the development of products that are connected with the dining experience. The research and creative practice I am currently undertaking it is a progression from the practical outcome of my Masters study. The study has resulted in a design concept for a dining table – this has been developed into a full sized prototype. The activity brings together the areas of my professional experience; firstly in the cutlery industry and secondly in graphic design. A further extension of my creative output has been added in the form of the design for a table that is intended as a piece of ‘couture’ furniture. The table has been prototyped in DuPont Corian. It has a unique built in storage case for a place setting, napkin and napkin ring. The monolithic, Donald Judd like quality of the form combined with the storage case, Corian material, surface textures and highlights of colour provide a catalyst for conversation at the table. A longer term intention, beyond the Masters study, is to develop designs for printed surface patterns and texts along with specially designed place settings (i.e. cutlery) and textile designs for the napkin. Designs for matching chairs may also be investigated. With further development it is hoped that ultimately, the design will go into commercial production. The full sized prototype was successfully exhibited in April 2011 in the Salone Satellite section of the Salone Internazionale Del Mobile in Milan which is the worlds premier furniture fair

Design of a multiple bloom filter for distributed navigation routing

    Get PDF
Unmanned navigation of vehicles and mobile robots can be greatly simplified by providing environmental intelligence with dispersed wireless sensors. The wireless sensors can work as active landmarks for vehicle localization and routing. However, wireless sensors are often resource scarce and require a resource-saving design. In this paper, a multiple Bloom-filter scheme is proposed to compress a global routing table for a wireless sensor. It is used as a lookup table for routing a vehicle to any destination but requires significantly less memory space and search effort. An error-expectation-based design for a multiple Bloom filter is proposed as an improvement to the conventional false-positive-rate-based design. The new design is shown to provide an equal relative error expectation for all branched paths, which ensures a better network load balance and uses less memory space. The scheme is implemented in a project for wheelchair navigation using wireless camera motes. © 2013 IEEE

CFRP truss for the CCAT 25 m diameter submillimeter-wave telescope

    Get PDF
CCAT will be a 25 m diameter submillimeter-wave telescope that will operate inside a dome located on Cerro Chajnantor in the Atacama Desert. The telescope must have high aperture efficiency at a wavelength of 350 microns and good performance out to a wavelength of 200 microns. A conceptual design for a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) truss and primary reflector support truss has been developed. This design yields a telescope with a net ½ wave front error of <10 microns using a lookup table to adjust the segment actuators to compensate for gravitational deflections. Minor corrections may be required to compensate for the expected 20 C temperature excursions. These can be handled using a coarse lookup table

Radix Conversion for IEEE754-2008 Mixed Radix Floating-Point Arithmetic

Conversion between binary and decimal floating-point representations is ubiquitous. Floating-point radix conversion means converting both the exponent and the mantissa. We develop an atomic operation for FP radix conversion with simple straight-line algorithm, suitable for hardware design. Exponent conversion is performed with a small multiplication and a lookup table. It yields the correct result without error. Mantissa conversion uses a few multiplications and a small lookup table that is shared amongst all types of conversions. The accuracy changes by adjusting the computing precision
