    Moon measurements made at Tromso, and at Spitzbergen, 70 and 78 N, back in the fifties have been re-evaluated. One has to take into account that the wedge calibration will change when the focussed image of the moon on the inlet slit is used. A correction was later decided to be used after several experiments in Dobsons Laboratory in Oxford. The absorption coefficients have been changed since the observations were taken and evaluated the first time. The re-evaluated ozone values have been plotted, in one diagram for Spitzbergen, and in one for Tromso. The zonal mean value for ozone is given as a reference. Ozone measurements from the winter season 1985/86 and 1986/87 made at the same places are presented. Here the daylight measurements are incorporated and also TIROS satellite data from single point data retrieval are given. The two winter seasons were very different. In the first we had a late final stratospheric warming, and in the other we had an early final stratospheric warming. This can be seen from the 30 millibar temperatures, provided by Barbara Naujokat, and plotted in the diagrams. Again the zonal mean values of ozone are given as reference

    EISCAT observations during MAC/SINE and MAC/Epsilon

    The EISCAT incoherent scatter radar facility in Tromsoe, Norway was operated during the MAC/SINE campaign for 78 hours in the period 10 June to 17 July 1987, and during the MAC/Epsilon campaign for 90 hours in the period 15 October to 5 November 1987. The VHF (224 MHz) radar operations during MAC/SINE yielded most interesting observations of strong coherent echoes from the mesopause region. Characteristic data of these polar mesospheric summer echoes are presented. The UHF (933 MHz) radar operations during MAC/Epsilon were done with 18 deg off zenith beam and allows the deduction of meridonal and horizontal wind components as well as radial velocity spectra in addition to the usual electron density profiles in the D and lower E regions. Some results from the VHF and UHF radars indicating the presence of gravity waves are examined

    Determinants of Female-headed Households’ Livelihood Diversification Strategies Choice in Ambo District, Ethiopia

    The study has concluded that diverse livelihood options are available and thus,Female - Headed Households pursue diverse range of activities that draw on their labor and time. However, the participation levels vary within Female - Headed Households(FHHs). The variation is mainly in terms of the activity they diversify into and conditions under which diversification are made. Generally, FHH participate in low-return and high risk and last resort activities. The study concludes that livelihood diversification strategies choice of FHH is determined by a number of factors. Hence, it is recommended that the livelihood of FHHs needs to be recognized and policy intervention should concentrate on improving access to assets within the aim of expanding livelihood options rather than assuming households are spatial homogenous and individual engage in one type of activity only

    Burst statistics of fluctuations in a simple magnetized torus configuration

    In a toroidal plasma confined by a purely toroidal magnetic field the plasma transport is governed by electrostatic turbulence driven by the flute interchange instability on the low-field side of the torus cross section. In this paper we revisit experimental data obtained from the Blaamann torus at the University of Tromso. On time-scales shorter than the poloidal rotation time, the time series of potential and electron density fluctuations measured on stationary Langmuir probes essentially reflect the spatial poloidal structure of the turbulent field (Taylor hypothesis). On these time scales the signals reveals an intermittent character exposed via analysis of probability density functions and computation of multifractal dimension spectra in different regimes of time scales. This intermittency is associated with the shape and distribution of pronounced spikes in the signal. On time scales much longer than the rotation period there are strong global fluctuations in the plasma potential which are shown to to be the result of low-dimensional chaotic dynamics

    Adaptive detection of a signal known only to lie on a line in a known subspace, when primary and secondary data are partially homogeneous

    This paper deals with the problem of detecting a signal, known only to lie on a line in a subspace, in the presence of unknown noise, using multiple snapshots in the primary data. To account for uncertainties about a signal's signature, we assume that the steering vector belongs to a known linear subspace. Furthermore, we consider the partially homogeneous case, for which the covariance matrix of the primary and the secondary data have the same structure but possibly different levels. This provides an extension to the framework considered by Bose and Steinhardt. The natural invariances of the detection problem are studied, which leads to the derivation of the maximal invariant. Then, a detector is proposed that proceeds in two steps. First, assuming that the noise covariance matrix is known, the generalized-likelihood ratio test (GLRT) is formulated. Then, the noise covariance matrix is replaced by its sample estimate based on the secondary data to yield the final detector. The latter is compared with a similar detector that assumes the steering vector to be known

    Data quality in European primary care research databases. Report of a workshop held in London September 2013

    Primary care research databases provide a significant resource for health services and epidemiological research. However since data are recorded primarily for clinical care their suitability for research may vary widely according to the research application or recording practices of individual general practitioners. A methodological approach for characterising data quality is required. We describe a one-day workshop entitled “Towards a common protocol for measuring and monitoring data quality in European primary care research databases”. Researchers, database experts and clinicians were invited to give their perspectives on data quality and to exchange ideas on what data quality metrics should be made available to researchers. We report the main outcomes of this workshop, including a summary of the presentations and discussions and suggested way forward

    Diets of shags Phalacrocorax aristotelis and cormorants P. carbo in Norway and possible implications for gadoid stock recruitment

    The diets of shags and cormorants were studied in Norway through analyses of regurgitated pellets. Although this method has many limitations, indications were that both species rely heavily on small gadoids (Gadidae) and sand eels (Ammodytidae) for food throughout their range, but also eat other fish species when available. There was considerable dietary overlap between species, despite a tendency for cormorants to eat larger fish and more benthic items than shags. Predation by shags and cormorants could be a factor limiting the recruitment of cod and saithe into what are now severely reduced, but commercially important stocks in the Norwegian and Barents Seas
