Context-aware adaptation in DySCAS
DySCAS is a dynamically self-configuring middleware for automotive control systems. The addition of autonomic, context-aware dynamic configuration to automotive control systems brings a potential for a wide range of benefits in terms of robustness, flexibility, upgrading etc. However, the automotive systems represent a particularly challenging domain for the deployment of autonomics concepts, having a combination of real-time performance constraints, severe resource limitations, safety-critical aspects and cost pressures. For these reasons current systems are statically configured. This paper describes the dynamic run-time configuration aspects of DySCAS and focuses on the extent to which context-aware adaptation has been achieved in DySCAS, and the ways in which the various design and implementation challenges are met

Orthogonal-Array based Design Methodology for Complex, Coupled Space Systems
The process of designing a complex system, formed by many elements and sub-elements interacting between each other, is usually completed at a system level and in the preliminary phases in two major steps: design-space exploration and optimization. In a classical approach, especially in a company environment, the two steps are usually performed together, by experts of the field inferring on major phenomena, making assumptions and doing some trial-and-error runs on the available mathematical models. To support designers and decision makers during the design phases of this kind of complex systems, and to enable early discovery of emergent behaviours arising from interactions between the various elements being designed, the authors implemented a parametric methodology for the design-space exploration and optimization. The parametric technique is based on the utilization of a particular type of matrix design of experiments, the orthogonal arrays. Through successive design iterations with orthogonal arrays, the optimal solution is reached with a reduced effort if compared to more computationally-intense techniques, providing sensitivity and robustness information. A Case Study in Optimization of Resource Distribution to Cope with Unanticipated Changes in Requirements
It is a known fact that requirements change continuously, and as a consequence, it may be necessary to reschedule development activities so that the new requirements can be addressed in a costeffective manner. Unfortunately, changes in requirements cannot be specified precisely. Moreover, current software development methods do not provide explicit means to adapt development processes with respect to unanticipated changes in requirements. This article first proposes a method based on Markov Decision Theory, which determines the estimated optimal development schedule with respect to probabilistic product demands and resource constraints. Second, a tool is described that is built to support the method. Finally, some experimental results are presented on the applicability of the proposed method

Multiscale Design for Solid Freeform Fabrication
One of the advantages of solid freeform fabrication is the ability to fabricate complex
structures on multiple scales, from the macroscale features of an overall part to the
mesoscale topology of its internal architecture and even the microstructure or
composition of the constituent material. This manufacturing freedom poses the challenge
of designing across these scales, especially when a part with designed mesostructure is
part of a larger system with changing requirements that propagate across scales. A setbased multiscale design method is presented for coordinating design across scales and
reducing iterative redesign of SFF parts and their mesostructures. The method is applied
to design a miniature unmanned aerial vehicle system. The system is decomposed into
disciplinary subsystems and constituent parts, including wings with honeycomb
mesostructures that are topologically tailored for stiffness and strength and fabricated
with selective laser sintering. The application illustrates how the design of freeform parts
